Hmm, I guess I'm the only thought that found the fourth one the weakest. I found the missionary and mermaid characters to be endlessly annoying (their innocence seemed weirdly out of place in a pirate movie). And I thought the constant innuendos seemed liked desperate grabs for the audience's interest.

All in all, the innuendos along with the zombies, anachronistic "romantic" guitar music, and 3D jump scares kind of just made On Stranger Tides feel really... gimmicky, I guess? It lacked the brains or cleverness of the first three movies.

My take on pirates films. Haven't seen them in forever.
First one was great and a load of fun.
Second was blahhhhh.
Third I enjoyed in the theater though I felt it was loooong.
Fourth was blahhhh. I did like Blackbeard.

You're not. I'm a fan of the whole series and the quasi-historical fantasy world that Verbinski, Rossio-Elliot and the Art Department created (also a fan of the more realistic "Black Sails" on Starz, for what it's worth).

I'm a bit of an outlier here since I think Worlds End (III) may be my favorite... it's got an awesome score and felt very operatic to me. It looked amazing, visually. Storywise, I think IV was hurt by my making Jack Sparrow the central character in the plot, whereas the original trilogy was really the story of Will and Elizabeth. Sparrow works better as a secondary character (e.g. Han Solo in Star Wars).

Speaking of outliers, I also loved Lone Ranger which is basically PotC in the Old West, by the very same creative team as the PotC trilogy. I think Quentin Tarantino may be the only other member of the Lone Ranger fan club (he named it one of his top ten of the year).

The Lone Ranger was great; very possibly my favorite live-action movie from Disney since Curse of the Black Pearl.

I also thought The Lone Ranger is very underated and enjoyable movie. I wish it would have been more successful I would have loved to have seen more.

Ever feel like a movie was a victim of it's own marketing? This one is the quintessential example of that. Marketed out of the very markets they needed to reach to be successful.

I agree...not sure why Lone Ranger was so hated...I thought it was a lot of fun...

I think after four Pirates movies and so many "weird" Johnny Depp roles (Charlie and the Chocolate Facorty, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland etc) audiences and critics had grown tired of the kind of movie they perceived Lone Ranger to be. Disney marketing playing up the Pirates angle didn't help.

Don't forget Rango.
Depp and Verbinski already did the Old West in that one.

Myself, I think Lone Ranger bombed because it was a bad, boring, overlong movie and word got out in time for people to save their time and money.
