Actually, no. The supposed Danish research (as reported on by the Huffingon Post among other scions of science), has been widely refuted.

It's as simple as calories consumed minus calories burned. Not much more complex than that.
Personally, I hope I live long enough to be here when all you superior beings reach middle age and weight starts to pile on and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. In the meantime, lets continue to put your children in strollers up to the point that their legs are hanging out over the front of it. Then we will see, in a few years people so large that they can't even fit into the boat and they never did learn how to flex a muscle.

People big enough to make that much of a difference in the boats actually are taking up the space of two people, so the weight is about the same if it's a boat full of anorexic or obese people. Get over yourselves, oh, slim for the moment people.

When you have time... if you have not already, check out the ride descriptions for the Shanghai pirates!
We get all worked up here on this old message board over weather we are going to bottom out or not, and they are going all omnimover/cutting edge imagineereing! I think I am going to start saving up for a trip to Shanghai!

Wait a minute...that drawing looks like a patent application, so I assume it's not exactly showing us the ride, but is that some kind of flume-based omnimover they're using? I guess I haven't been keeping up with this.

Yeah, it's a pretty ambitious system if that's what they actually went with. You can't really tell from the construction photo that's been released.

If you want boats that won't sink, get Boston Whaler for a sponsor. No one will mind a few 20 foot models sitting out in the plaza, right?
I'll sell my 15 foot Boston whaler from 1982, is sure in better condition than the Pirate boats, and it has a 70 HP Johnson. So log jams wouldn't be an issue.

OH MY GAWD!!!!

Why does Shanghai get all the good stuff???? Even incomplete, that scene looks so freaking awesome. It looks like what Walt and his Imagineers of his day were TRYING to do. Could we ever hope that OUR Pirates rides would get refurbed into this? I've always said that the battle-at-sea scene in WDW's Pirates needs a major upgrade. And that picture is what I MEAN about "major upgrade". God, I'm so envious of Shanghai right now...

Amazing right that technology has advanced since that time so things like this can be done.... No way they go back and fix the old rides to mimic this as personally I feel the old rides when working are pretty damn amazing still.

Ok so now after looking at this and it is cool is this going to still have water around the boat you are in? I love that part of the current ride and don't want to see a LM effect.

Yes.

Ride Radiator Springs Racers. Or Indiana Jones Adventure. Or Pirates in Paris. You'll see WDI can't still do it when allowed to. Sadly they haven't been allowed to really let go in Orlando for a while now.

Then try Forbidden Journey, Spider-Man or Revenge of the Mummy to see how the "competition" is catching up.

I've never gone to Universal, is it worth it to try a day? Which park is stronger?

Honestly if they used Digital mapped projections in the battle scene they could indeed create the storm at sea like the concept art...they could add some thoughtful additions with film here and there that would work seamlessly... They were very successful with the work they did like that on the Alice ride at Disneyland... So why not give it a try?

I'm a little wary of an Omnimover-style ride system, though. I just wonder if it will diminish the feel to be in a chain of tracked vehicles and not in an individual boat. Wouldn't this make the whole ride feel like the boat backup at the end of WDW's? Plus, the typical Omnimover motions, like turning sideways and so on, would seem to destroy the feel that you were in a boat even if your ride vehicle is boat-themed. I guess I'm just curious to see how the ride system and ride fits together before I get jealous. Not that I am likely to ever see the Shanghai version in person.

The patent drawings imply that there are wheeled track dogs below the boats, not necessarily that the boats are linked in a chain. It could be that the Shanghai Pirates boats function not unlike the Jungle Cruise boats or 20,000 leagues subs in that they're barely buyouant and still have wheels that make contact with the floor of the trough. In that case, having articulated wheels would allow the boats to be forced rotate about the surface of the water if the wheels are in different channels, and jets placed underwater could still power the boats' locomotion AND help them turn against the direction of their travel and back again.

This kind of motion might still feel like natural motion for a boat if the ride is giving ques to explain the odd motion (orbiting a whirlpool, having a rope being temporarily attached to the boat, being hit with waves or a sea monster from the side, etc.)

While this system probably relies on completely different mechanics to make it work, the end result reminds me a bit of older rides like Rhino Rally or Version One of the Jaws ride.
