Main Street U.S.A. hub redevelopment at the Magic Kingdom

This settles it. Disney needs to build a second castle, so that when one needs to be repaired, they fly in a fleet of helicopters, remove the MK castle overnight, and replace it with Castle2. That way no one ever has to see the castle being worked on again.

But a bus driver told me it could be dismantled within 6 hours incase of a hurricane.

True story sadly. And it was my bit of "Disney Trivia" for a fair few years. I was only 8 the first time we went though.

Oh how I wish this were true! I would love to see video of the "all hands on deck", where every CM is called upon to descend on the Castle like a swarm of cybugs and dissasble it in a madcap 6 hour scramble that could be set to Benny Hill music.

The new towers in WDW's hub appear to have Red-Blue-Green LED PAR cans and some LED bars on top?

The new LED lights that are going up around the Hub are ETC D40XTs.

I look forward to seeing what kind of magic they program into all of the shows and holiday special events as the colors you can get from these fixtures are amazing!

The little tube things on the top of the pipe are emitters for the Glow with the show ears.

If i knew the hub AND castle would look like this i would have gone some other time....just ruins the whole experience...only my opinion so y'all take it as that

Nothing wrong with that. You are spending hard earned money to go. The numerous projects around wdw is why we changed our plans and will return later. I used to be there multiple times a month, now maybe once every two-four years.

Is there a particular reason they are installing these lights? I'm guessing it's not just for special events and holidays.

At least the lighting fixtures were painted to kinda match the colors of the poles.
yah but I miss mk that was about the charm and nothing is charming like seeing a pole that looks like it belongs in a football field... not complaining about your comment or anything cause you are right they are cool and can do awesome things but it really ruins the scene for daily use...

hope you don't take that as me yelling at you or anything... not meaning to sound that way if it seemed it.

I don't have any idea as to why they picked these fixtures other than they produce great colors as well as a nice warm white that we are used to seeing with the older lights.

They are also much more efficient energy wise.

No harm lol They don't have that clean look like the old poles do, and I wish there was a way to hide them during the day but that could be another update in the future.

I'm not a lighting designer, but the visual clutter on the parade lights gives me a headache. I wonder why they couldn't stack the lights up the side of the pole instead of putting them on outriggers like they did. If the giant poles HAD to be there, at least they could have been more slender and less "football stadium-like" as erclvrb18 mentioned.

The really bad news is the darn crane, when fully extended, towers over the castle by at least a third of the castle height. I had business that took me on Reams Rd this morning that runs just behind the MK and the top of the castle and the crane can be seen clearly.

The last I heard from a MK manager is that the east side FP viewing in front of the Crystal Palace is on schedule to open for guests Feb 27
I usually visit in late January/early February so I'm not sure if I would recognize the Castle without the crane.

BTW, how's this for "Perspective"?

I could explain at least the theory of why the lighting rig / stands look the way they do, which in very simple terms amounts to a wider & more even intensity of light along route. Stacking the fixtures is more for when you are hitting one "straight line" at varying distance from the source. A lot of the "why" makes sense to me on the technical side but my creative side is in total agreement that they could have been better concealed / themed. One thing I've always appreciated about Disney was the effort to make "magic" in their shows, to not have every piece of gear obvious.

Looks like we may be seeing a the needle more towards "show" and slowly moving away from "magic". Time will tell.

wait...wait...wait...the crane is STILL up right now???
its on and off, interestingly. when I visited.. the crane was NOT in the mornings.. only was set up in the late afternoon.. no idea why only in the afternoons and nights.
infact, they corral and close the whole area behind the castle at night (I was on the 10th to the 16th)

They managed to hide lighting In the daytime Epcot in 1982 with no buildings to conceal them. They could've done the same here in the middle of the most populated and photographed part of the most popular park in the world.

Extra lighting is needed, especially around the hub ring and the end of Main St. It's all about the execution though.

Shame.

Good spot! (pun intended)

I've heard good things about these instruments, though I don't have any hands on experience with them myself.

I wish the installation were cleaner, but the fixtures themselves are a great choice for this application.
