I thought Magical Express you didnt touch your luggage once you put it on the plane on the way to WDW? But then inside the booklet that comes with the tags it mentions retaining the claim tickets for use at the Disney Welcome Center upon arrival... Im confused.

I don't know what that means about the claim tickets, unless they are talking about the paperwork you have to have to board the Magical Express bus (which we accidentally left in our non-carry-on luggage, but they let us board the bus anyway).
When we went last summer, we dropped off our luggage at the airport before we left & did not touch it again until we got to our resort room at WDW!
I guess that's why they call if "magical.":D

Actually, they are right, you DO need to retain your claim ticket for the luggage, but you won't be touching your own luggage again. At the welcome center when they check you in, they also will (at times) ask you for your claim check and they put that number into their computer, along with the color of your bag. When off-peak, they don't bother. During peak, it probably makes things faster for them.

The claim check that you speak of is the booklet that the tags you put on the bags. They have you ID in them, so with some other ID they check you in and direct you to the line for your bus.

And also in the unlikely event that your luggage is l;ost, you might need them.

BTW, take pictures of your luggage before you leave - it makes it much easier for them to find if anything does happen to it.

Better yet, don't use the yellow luggage tags at all, claim your luggage yourself at the airport and THEN have them put it on the bus.

It's more effort, but if I had done that on our trip, it would have avoided us waiting 7 HOURS for them to finally deliver our luggage to the room!!

What you have to do is put your tags on your bags, keep your claim ticket, check your bags, get on the bus, get to the hotel , give your claim ticket to the cm, theyll put it into the computer so the cm's know what luggage goes to what room, then they will drop your luggage off . I suggest bringing a carryon bag with clothes and other necessities because depending on where and when you are staying, it might take a long time for your luggage to arrive.

Doing this requires going to baggage claim, claiming your own bags, and then dragging it all to the DME Welcome Center and then to the bus. Only at the bus will someone help you with your bags ... the driver will stow them underneath for you.

It's always a good idea to pack a carry-on with your immediate needs, if not for DME then just in case the AIRLINE delays your luggage.

About the baggage claim tickets that they tell you you'll need at the Disney Welcome Center ....

Yeh, I know it says that, BUT .... As long as you placed the yellow DME tags on each bag, you will not be asked for your baggage claim checks. PERIOD. Anyone, PLEASE respond if you were asked for your baggage claim checks even though you put the yellow DME tags on your bags. They simply don't ask, and there's no reason for them to ask.

Now, if you DIDN'T put the yellow DME tags on your bags, THEN you certainly will need to present those claim checks at the Welcome Center. Disney will need those to claim your bags on your behalf from the public baggage claim carousel. Otherwise, the CM who goes to the public carousel and claims your bags might look like he/she is stealing your bags, but they will have the claim checks, so everything will be kosher.

I am well aware of all of what you said. And we did in fact have a carry-on with immediate needs addressed. But 7 hours was still WAY excessive and we had to stay up late to wait for them to arrive. I would gladly have lugged the bags myself to avoid it.

Just saying.

I've never given the claim ticket to a cm at the hotel, there is no need unless your bags haven't shown up after a certain amount of time and you need to find out where they are.

Funny story about Magical express, the only time I used it.

On our last day there, we got the little card on the door and was told to be back at the resort 2 hours before our flight left. No problem. We show up and the bus never did. So Disney call and paid for a cab for us. The funny part was, it took this cabby almost an hour and a half to get us to the airport. This guy took the longest way ever, I swear he went in a big circle, and the fair was 120 something dollars.

120 bucks.

Who said these guys don't steal, that was a joke.

The cab thing indicates the terrible relationship that WDW has with the Orlando community -- cabs, newspapers, restaurants...why wouldn't the cabbie want to cash in as much as he can on Disney? Crooks are everywhere? But you cut down on crooks if you improve visibility and relationships.

As to the claim check and the person daring me to tell you they checked my claim check why would I have posted that if it had not occured?? They are supposed to ask you if you have your claim ticket and write down the number. Just because 99 percent of the time they do not does not mean that is not the protocol. I agree that it is useless information, unless your bag is lost somewhere, but there is a reason that they ask you to retain your claim check, and that is to prevent problems if things DO get lost.

I have never heard of a 7-hour delivery time = your bags were lost for hours somewhere in the airport or on disney trucks going around in circles. The average wait is 2 hours give or take a half hour in each direction.

You should never rely on your luggage arriving immediately if you are using DME. While 7 hours is excessive, it most likely won't happen again. You were the exception to the norm.

Usually an excessive wait time for luggage delivery with DME is in the hands of the airline, not DME. DME has numerous trucks going back and forth between the resorts and MCO constantly. If all things are running smoothly, bags should appear in the room in about two hours.

Carry-on bags, as previously stated, should always be packed with essentials like medications, personal items, money, id, and a change of clothes. Never put something in your checked luggage that you will need within 24 hours. This is not specific to Disney trips; airlines ALWAYS lose luggage.

Hi there!!! The process is almost the same for a non participating airline as for a participating one!!! Tag your bags as you would for a participating airline, check your bags as usual, you will get your claim checks at this point ( in case your luggage goes astray etc) board your plane and fly down to Orlando, Go to the DME welcome center and check in, your bags are being taken off the plane and left "backstage" at the Orlando International Airport. They will NOT come out on the carosel at all. Or if you prefer, DONT tag them, grab your bag at the luggage carousel then proceed to the DME welcome center. Take the DME bus to your resort. On your check out day, Participating airlines can check their luggage in and receive their boarding pass at the resorts, non participating should check their bags with the luggage area in the resort until they are ready to leave then, take their bags with them on the DME bus and check in with their airline as you would normally.
I happen to think DME Is awesome and a great service to Disney's customers but a few words of advice are in order. Do pack a carry on with some essentials to see you through your first 2-3 hours of your vacation, such as a change of clothes ( shorts, swimsuit etc). Pack all prescriptions, glasses/ contact lenses, camera equipment, jewelery, money/ traveler's checks eetc with you in either your carry on or on your person. Anything that cannot be replaced pretty quickly, easily or inexpensively should be carried with you. Also make sure that you read your airline's rules on what can be carried on to a plane. If you have kids it is important to go over the rules with them to as they will be subject to search as well. Wear comfortable shoes as in most airports I have had to remove them. If you can travel comfortably in slip on shoes, do it!!! Here is a link to the TSA's website to tell you what is allowed to be brought onboard and tips for traveling with kids:

I hope this helps! Belle

Disney does a really poor job of publicizing that there is a difference between Disney's Magical Express and Resort Airline Check-in.

Disney's Magical Express (DME) is not airline specific. EVERYONE ONE EVERY AIRLINE gets the full DME treatment. DME is two things:
  • round-trip motorcoach transportation between MCO and your WDW owned-and-operated resort
  • one-way automatic luggage transfer from airplane to inside of resort room (you totally skip baggage claim)

Again, the above is for everyone on every airline, no exceptions.

Resort Airline Check-in (RAC)is something that people use at the END of their trips. It's with RAC that there are "participating airlines." Think of RAC as curbside check-in, only it's in the lobby of every WDW owned-and-operated resort rather than at the airport. It's exactly like curbside check-in: you check in for your flight and get your boarding passes, and also check your luggage through to your final destination (and no longer have access to it). Just like curbside check-in, after you use RAC you can go right to your departure gate, there's no need to go to your airline's ticket counter.

People who can't use RAC simply get their luggage to their DME bus ... the driver loads it underneath, and you get it back when you get dropped off at the airport. At that point, you check-in either at your airline's ticket counter or at curbside check-in if available.

Well, last September we landed at 1:00p at MCO and when we arrived back at the resort that evening after being in the parks at 9p, we still had not received our luggage. I went down to the luggage area to see why and there was a line of at least 10 other people in front of me and at least 10 or more cages of luggage sitting there. They apparently did not have enough staff to deliver it!! I told the woman when I got up to the counter that I just wanted my luggage and I'll roll it to the room myself. We had my 2 yr old nephew with us and he needed pj's and diapers by this time and I wanted pj's myself it had been a long day.

This was the only time I had a problem with the luggage delivery in the many many times I've used DME. All other times the luggage arrived within the 2-3 hr time frame.
