I think they were going for turn of the (21st) century. šŸ¤Ø

You made me edit my post! Also, accurate.

I'm not trying to attack anyone who likes the new design. That's great! I'm just trying to get people to understand why I (and others) dislike it (and other recent design changes) so much. The themed design was a major reason we liked Disney in the first place.

I really hope this doesn't transfer over to the emporium as was rumored a while back. I agree with others that I go to Disney specifically for the addition of extra details and this just feels bland.
Disney has done and can do a refreshed look with details. This very obviously puts the "we want sleeker designs" in the forefront without trying to hide it.

ā€œEmporium presented by Targetā€ will have wonderful home goods.

I definitely think the Emporium is going to get this kind of makeover. Itā€™s hard to tell where that would be in the priority list.

iā€™m more excited about the CVS thatā€™s going to open up.

Yeah, somehow this doesn't look like a turn of the century store to me.

I think whatā€™s difficult to parse here is that pretty much every candy store borrows from a similar turn-of-the-century visual language with apothecary jars, moderately ornate cabinet moldings, orderly pastry displays, and pastel color schemes. I do agree that Disney should lean more overtly into the theme, but itā€™s not directionally incorrect for there to be similarities.

Had my architect mom and avid Confectionary connoisseur look at the photos.

All around, she really likes it, especially the glass cases with treats behind the registers seen here

Her primary complaints were the grills in the glass cases seen here

She wasnā€™t a fan of the circle motif in the new center, but she loves the new look seen here

Exactly this. The refurbished confectionery is just... fine. There's nothing wrong with it, per se, but a few tweaks would have made a big difference.

Using this picture as an example...

...some things that would have improved the look and feel of the store:
  • Using colorful floor tile instead of the speckled white and grey that you see literally everywhere these days (as an aside, the faux wood floor is a big downgrade from the previous flooring).
  • More ornate queue railings, perhaps with some whimsical candy shapes worked in.
  • More elaborate globe lights. The center chandelier is good, but the other lights are too small, plain, and don't even match the chandelier.
  • Use a pastel color along the base of the counter.
  • Add some lighting inside the display cases - make those sweet treats pop!
  • Use less industrial ceiling diffusers (something similar to this, for example).

I like the look of the popcorn area. It feels inviting and I dig the wood and colors fitting together well. The Confectionary itself? It looks to me like they went with the Iger/Chapek era signature look - Sterile and bland.

I also thought the little popcorn area looked better than the rest of the store.
