News Live-Action Ariel Meet and Greet at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Probably. Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast had legit stars. No one’s ever seen anything with this actress and likely seeing / hearing the name wonder why Halle Berry is starring in this.

Underwhelming trailers, lack of star power, crowded theatrical calendar equals barely making its money back. I’m guessing in the $650-$700 M range if it’s lucky.
I don’t think it’s gonna touch that, if I’m being honest. People are turned off by this Disney. It’s pushing ideology and not bottom line. I think she’s very talented but won’t be able to carry this movie n

Mario had an untapped IP and great Cinemascore, word of mouth, and little competition.

We‘ll see how TLM does.
Yup Mario was the perfect storm. We'll get a better idea of how this movie will preform the closer we get to release. However I do agree Little Mermaid is releasing in a crowded time for the box office and so far I'm not seeing the buzz for this film.

There’s been plenty of “new movies with different stories” in recent years… Soul, Luca, Raya, Turning Red, Encanto, Strange World, etc. whether they have been high quality or well received is a matter of opinion, but it's not really true that Disney isn't only doing remakes/sequels.
Because they are creatively bankrupt. They have for the last decade haired mostly on things other than merit, and it is showing in their results. No actual good storytellers are left. The people who got hired were hired to push an agenda, so the quality has gone way downhill.

Pete Docter, who wrote Soul also wrote Monsters Inc, Up & Inside Out.
Encanto, by Jared Bush also wrote Zootopia & Moana.

It's irrelevant, Disney didn't hire these writers to "push an agenda". They hired them to write movies, which they did. You not liking them is your problem.

There has been a lot of discussion about social/cultural issues, which is one of the topics to be avoided. Thank you.

I disagree. Representation is very meaningful for those who previously lacked it. No-one is saying you can’t identify with a character who doesn’t resemble you, but when the vast majority of characters look a certain way (which used to be the case until relatively recently), it can be very alienating and dispiriting for those children (and adults) who don’t see themselves reflected in such portrayals.
The way people "look" is a terrible, very shallow way to identify with them. I dont look at characters on TV or movies and make visual inspections like:

Are they "my" skin color?
Are they "my" age?
Are they a man, like "me" or are they a woman?
Are they tall, like "me"?
Are they fat like "me" or are they not?
Are they straight like "me" or a different sexuality?
Do they have the same politics as "me"?
Do they worship "my" God or something else?
Are they/Do they....etc...etc...

I NEVER ask these questions when liking or disliking a character. I don't do it with REAL people either. "I" dont need to feel "represented" in ANYthing I watch! I am perfrctly happy to watch movies that show ZERO 53 year old, tall, fat, heterosexual, libertarian white men in it. That does NOT bother me.

There is only "ONE"..."me"...on planet Earth and there is NObody that can ever "represent" me in any movie or TV show. I have no desire or attraction for being "represented" in media. I'm attracted to interesting characters based on who they are in the INSIDE not how they look on the outside.

Im sorry...but people desperatly seeking to see "themselves" being exactly "represented" in movies and TV...just seems shallow, selfish and weird. It's very "me" centric thinking.

"You" are not a "group" or a demographic...you are a single individual and only YOU...represent "you".

I don't drink, but I'll gladly accept a cup of tea. :)

Do they sell good hot tea anywhere at Disney? Starbucks used to have Tazo Tea, which is just about the worst tea in the world. I think they have Teavana now, which is better but still not especially good. I'm not sure what they have at Joffrey's.

No, they don't. But when I'm Disney Tired, I'll take just about anything.

ETA: This may come as a surprise, but Lipton's, though weak, is usually the safest bet, and certainly preferable to fancier brands such as Tazo.

You're mischaracterising my position, but since we've been asked to stop discussing the topic, I'll leave it there.

I will direct this towards you since you have always been respectful with your answers even though I’m not good at formulating my thoughts into words.

If I saw a black girl in a mermaid outfit in a parade somewhere, l wouldn’t think to myself hey look it’s the Little Mermaid.

Now if you surrounded her with other characters from the film I would get it.

If you put a white girl with red hair in the parade I would instantly associate her with Ariel.

Ok so let’s say race, and by extension appearance, is not important to the character.

Since there are an almost limitless combination of skin tones and hairs color how is anyone supposed to identify Ariel?

I would have to assume that from now on everyone I see appearing as a mermaid is Ariel or that no-one is, without so form of additional evidence.

By her costume and attributes. The argument isn't that any old mermaid can be Ariel, but that Ariel herself can take different guises, including in terms of race. So far, Disney has given us two movie versions of the character. Both have red(dish) hair, turquoise tails, and purple bras. Both are recognisable as Ariel.

What would stop you from assuming that same character is Merida, a white girl with red hair?

While this extension is not accurate, let’s suppose it was, as others have mentioned, how do you identify any character? By their attributes, for Ariel it could be either a mermaid tail, or a green dress with puffy sleeves. For example, if you were to see a little black girl dressed as Ariel for Halloween, would you not be able to decipher that it was Ariel?

I mean no disrespect by this post.

This post is in no way disrespectful I welcome this type of discussion because I always like to better my understanding.

Let me try to answer this as best I can.

Merida does not have a mermaid tail so I wouldn’t assume that.

Black girl on Halloween-

So I know that on Halloween kids dress up as famous characters and since Ariel is the most famous mermaid ( I think ) at least to kids, I would be able to put 2 and 2 together instantly.

Like you said we use attributes to identify someone quickly. Skin color and hair are two huge identifiers.

I never paid close attention to her outfit or bra color or whatever.

White girl. Red hair. Tail.

That’s Ariel.
