There absolutely should be more non-white princesses but I feel like they should make new movies and characters instead of redoing existing characters with different looks. Same thing would apply if they tried to do a movie with an oriental Tiana or a hispanic Mulan. Keep the classics the same, create new hit movies, new characters, and future classics. That is assuming their creativity and imagination hasn’t run out in their movie dept (which it’s beginning to seem like)

They are doing that too though - Wish has a non-white lead (not sure if she is a princess or not) and is an original story/not a remake

But they also know the remake will make, at a minimum, decent $. They can't take risks with everything's since they don't always make $

I still don’t understand why Disney just can’t create new movies with different stories and then use whatever new characters they

There’s been plenty of “new movies with different stories” in recent years… Soul, Luca, Raya, Turning Red, Encanto, Strange World, etc. whether they have been high quality or well received is a matter of opinion, but it's not really true that Disney isn't only doing remakes/sequels.

I have much more interest in seeing a new Guardians movie than the Little Mermaid redo
I have more interest in Guardians but not enough to see it in theaters.

If Guardians can’t beat our Mario I think it’s a sign Marvel is in trouble.

Normally you would expect a property as beloved as Little Mermaid to easily out perform a video game movie, however I would bet the house that it won’t.

Early reviews have called Guardians the best MCU film since Endgame, coupled with the fact that it’s the last in the Guardians trilogy, this will probably do at least a billion.
I am unsure if this is great or not, being that there isn’t much to write about since Endgame.

Infinity War was much bette by the way.

This movie is DOA.
Probably. Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast had legit stars. No one’s ever seen anything with this actress and likely seeing / hearing the name wonder why Halle Berry is starring in this.

Underwhelming trailers, lack of star power, crowded theatrical calendar equals barely making its money back. I’m guessing in the $650-$700 M range if it’s lucky.

Guardians won’t beat Mario. Marvel films have been underperforming the predecessors in the series.

I don’t think anything Disney releases this year will outperform Mario.

Guardians isn’t as popular as Mario. Mario has been around WAY along with multiple generations as well. Hard to compare the 2.

The mermaid movie is gonna be interesting. I do not expect it to do as good as they hoped it would

Everyone on these forums was saying Guardians was a Billion $$$ movie.

Now the tune has changed to Mario is a bigger IP than Marvel?

What number would Guardians have to be under for you to think the MCU is in trouble ?

If it doesn’t clear $650M that’s a very worrisome sign

Honestly, Marvel fans want a good movie. There’s a lot of hesitation in the fanbase after the past few years of awful movies and shows. If Guardians is good, word will spread and people will go see it. People love GotG, they just may need permission to see it.

Neither of the GOTG have made a billion dollars. Anything less than what the first movie made (about $770 million) would look bad, especially considering that the Guardians are now mainstream Marvel characters, and I'd say it'd be flat out embarrassing if it makes under $600 million.

For my part, after seeing the brilliant, innovative animation of Spiderverse and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I have little desire to see a Disney film populated with same boring rubber-doll characters that are, on top of that, poorly designed. I mean, look at "Wish". It looks like a direct-to-Disney+ show. The little goat is meh. The leading lady is bland-looking. Maybe she'll have enough personality to overcome that, and maybe the story will be compelling, but I'm not holding my breath.

Maybe what Disney needs to do is take a real risk, and produce a new 2D animated film. There's more character and energy in classic Disney 2D films than in any CGI movie Disney ever made. Maybe that'll jolt the audience into caring about Disney films again. But that won't happen. Dream on, silly dreamer...

It’s not tracking to open well.

To be fair long term projections for Mario weren't that great either and certainly didn't show it being as successful as it has been. Not saying this will have a run like Mario but long term projections aren't infallible.

Mario had an untapped IP and great Cinemascore, word of mouth, and little competition.

We‘ll see how TLM does.

There are also dozens of Movie/Media enthusiasts/reviewers/analysts on social media that are predicting TLM will make 1 billion+. Predictions are just that, predictions. We’ll all revisit this thread in late July and see who was right.

Also while Halle Bailey isn’t a huge star, Melissa McCarthy is a pretty big star and she’s also in this movie. Releasing Halles version of Part of Your World was also a great idea.
