So this new Jonathan character is leveraged by Ms. White to help achieve her leadership dreams?
Or, to requote Burnap’s words, which sound rather less silly:

It’s a new story in the sense that it’s no longer a princess waiting to be saved by a prince, but a princess waiting to be saved by herself and finding her voice, her strength and her courage and actually, in the end, saving everyone around her.

Maybe Jonathan is going to end up eating the apple, and Snow White will have to save him from the Queen.

That actually didn't help. 🫤

At least young Mr. Burnap is easy on the eyes.

Finding myself wanting Snow White to do well purely to shut down the chorus of anti-woke derision, I’ve come to the realisation that I’m succumbing to the very tendency I’ve criticised others for. There’s something very unhealthy and, frankly, weird about getting so invested in the success or failure of a film about which we know next to nothing.

That's how I felt about Little Mermaid initially but now I don't even care tbh. I'm so sick to death of these remakes and the leaked photos for this one just look comically bad. I don't think this one is going to do well at all.

I personally am indifferent to the remakes as a category. Like all genres, some of them have been good and some have been bad.

The leaked pictures don’t inspire confidence in this particular remake. That said, there’s very little point in assuming too much based on the scant information we have.

I always appreciated your outlook when reading through these threads. I kind of forgot a Snow White live action remake was happening but these photos do not give me confidence.

I really dislike being so negative but man....this looks rough.

At the same time, people on here cry out about Disney doing these remakes and not differentiating them enough.

I cannot speak for anyone else but this is not my take. IMHO Disney has two choices if they want to do a “live action remake”:

1. Do essentially a beat by beat depiction with minimal changes. Maybe flesh it out a little more and smooth over some rough elements but leave the story and characters largely intact from the original. e.g. Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, etc

2. Do a deconstruction where you explicitly do the story from a different prospective and there is no pretense of being a remake of the original. It helps to not use the same title as the original. e.g. Maleficent, Cruella.

The former is creatively bankrupt but it’s a money grab and makes no bones about it. You have nostalgia for the original, you go and see the remake to reconnect with those feelings, no one has any different expectations

The latter works as a creative project if someone has a good idea for that and is actually interesting. More potential to be a “miss” but if you keep costs down, is a cool thing to pursue.

The halfway where they change too much stuff to the story or characters but keep the title and try to sell it on nostalgia is IMHO a bad idea. It dissatisfies too much of the potential audience and will have trouble selling as well. I’m expecting this Snow White movie to unfortunately fall in that category. The story and character changes I think will go over like a lead balloon.

I wish they’d just stick to #2.

The only remakes I’ve watched more than once on D+ are Cruella and Maleficent. If I want to watch BatB, Lion King, Aladdin, etc I always opt for the original animated version.

I watch the straight to video sequels (from the 80s/90s) more than the remakes, at least they’re original. BatB Enchanted Christmas is now a Xmas tradition in my house, Lion King 1.5 is hilarious, Kronks new groove rivals the original... they have great characters, it’s kind of sad they just make lazy copies and don’t expand on them.

I'd prefer it as well if they need to do anything at all. But I get it, they are a corporation and they like making money and the live action remakes (mostly) sell. But if you are going to do such a soulless cash grab and peddle nostalgia, do it properly and don't try to make a statement with such a movie. Just churn it out with the same plot and characters and tweak it a little to try to improve the story if it fits and makes sense. The Jungle Book, for example, was a perfect way to do this - they kept the same basic movie, but expanded and enhanced it and actually made it better than the original. Some of the other ones had some small chances that were at least neutral and didn't mess up the stories that much - Cinderella, Aladdin, even Beauty and the Beast made some small changes that I don't think make them "better" than the originals but gave them some at least distinct features and you could see they try to address some "problematic" concepts but in a small way that (by and large) didn't alienate fans of the originals.

I'll also just say that if the company wants to try remake movies in an "improved" way, they would be better off focusing on less popular ones than on their gold standard classics. A new The Black Cauldron in live action that was better than the original would be a good idea. Maybe something like Wind in the Willows or The Aristocats? I'm just saying if you are going to remake a classic, just remake it because they are too beloved and too much a part of cultural tradition at this point to muck with them without annoying a lot of people.

That's just my take on how this films work out. I mean, if Disney is intent on them being financial successes and liked by the fanbase.

Ironically, I think Snow White is actually a good choice for an updated live action version. Quite frankly, I think the original among old school Disney really shows its age and is kind of boring and short and kind of abrupt. Using the original but maybe adding some other songs, having some more courtship between Snow and the Prince, adding some more time of Snow living with the Dwarfs, maybe a bit more action/heroism with the Dwarfs fighting and defeating the Queen, stuff like that could make it "better" without fundamentally changing it. Just spit balling. But I would do small stuff like that to flesh out the film and make it a bit longer - I would not change the characters or the basic plot. I sure as heck wouldn't make the Dwarfs not little people nor would I change their names or characteristics which is pretty much synonymous with the Disney story.

I assume you’re being sarcastic.
I was joking earlier in the thread, but in this specific instance, I am 100% being serious. I could totally see them making Snow White rescue the prince/male love interest.

While I think there is a good chance this live-action remake may be a total misfire, it's nothing to get upset about. The original animated movie will always exist and isn't going anywhere. I'll still check out the remake regardless as I think Rachel Zegler is good casting and I want to support her career.
