Little Mermaid in 3D canceled

Just bought new release of Phineas and Ferb 'Animal Agents' (released Feb 26th) and there's a full trailer for Little Mermaid in 3D. So, is it really dead? My 6 yr old's fave is Ariel and now she's very excited due to that trailer. Any updates or changes to the plans that anyone is aware of?

The plan was already in motion with marketing that was done in advance.

Monsters Inc 3D did not do as well as they hoped or wanted and underperformed, so looks like they are scaling back on the 3D.
Maybe awareness is an issue. I had no idea that they rereleased Monsters in 3D, and would have gone if I knew.

I went to see both BatB and Lion King in 3D, not for the 3D, but simply to get to see these on the big screen again.
Exactly, although I think I was still in the womb for BatB.

its really great to know that at least the film will have a 3d release on bluray. so there is always that option there. whether ill get the 3D release is another thing. i've just started getting into 3D films after buying a 3D capable tv. ive watched films at the cinema in 3D and they never really had any impact on me. not until ive watched stuff on 3D bluray have i thought "oh, cool" but thats usually more animated 3D stuff like pixar and the recent digital/3D disney films like wreck it ralph.

ive yet to see an actual 2D animation thats been converted into 3D, post conversions like Titanic was one i thought stuck out like a sore thumb, and just seemed a lot more novel and pop up book style compared to films that are shot in 3D like The Hobbit and Avatar.

what are peoples opinions on The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast in 3D? does it work?

Stunning. I fell in love with the Lion King 3D, from my home 3d setup.

The 3d effect is very different from new 3d CGI movies. The characters and backgrounds are still all 'flat', instead of rounded. The 3d feels like a multiplane camera on steroids. But it works! It totally breaths new life into these classics. I can't wait for Mermaid in 3d, wish they would convert a few more. (Aladdin would be awesome in 3d!)

If you're in the Los Angeles area, The El Capitan Theatre will be showing The Little Mermaid in 3D beginning tomorrow (9/13). It's the only theater worldwide that will be showing the 3D version of the film! There will also be a live preshow featuring Sofia the First before the movie, and a live appearance by Ariel after the movie.

Obviously fans would pick a new Pixar/Disney animated film over a 3-Dization of a prior film. Lion King was one of the biggest animated hits of all time before Pixar, and being the first 3-Dization, it may have had a novelty that wore off.

I wonder how long the lines for Mermaid are at MK?

Given DCA's version of Mermaid, I can't help but feel that the attraction hurts the franchise. Since it only costs a couple million to the 3-D treatment, I bet they do it anyway on Mermaid since the work is partially done, and that they release it on 3D DVD.

If Maleficent is a success, I wonder if they might consider doing a live-action Mermaid film, maybe even change the story a bit (they changed the story for the ride). I think a live action Mermaid film could even be magical and a bit mysterious if they focused on Ursula before/during she became a sea witch. And who wouldn't want to see an Ariel with a human top-half and a CGI Mermaid tail bottom? The Mermaids in Pirates look pretty cool.

Mermaid the ride is sort of . . . late to the game in terms of an attraction, and something needs to be done to reinvigorate the franchise, outside of the adventures of Melody.

I believe 3D between dvd and blu ray are two very different processes to make them.

Oh man, I wish Disney would just release Mermaid 3D in theaters already. I'd so go and see that! I loved the 3d Lion King and BatB.

I liked The Phantom Menace in 3D too - and the chance to see SW on the big screen again. So disappointed TWDC suddenly halted their 3D re-releases!
