True. I've been looking forward to the Rise of Gru for years. Lightyear I had no interest in seeing. There are a huge amount of Lightyear toys that will sit forever. I just wonder what I can customize the toys into when they go on clearance.
Anyone that can see that outside of the Disney fog. Minons is about to make more money in three days than Lightyear did in its entire release. It just shows that pandemic streaming really hurt Pixar animation.
Yes anyone can see it now after Lightyear didn't perform as expected and the box results of Minions have already been reported. That's like guessing the weather after you are step outside and are getting rained on. But thanks for that insight.
It is much easier to make a guess on this when you already know 1/2 of that equation. I wonder who would have guessed that Minions would (probably) be making more money than Lightyear just a few months ago. My guess is very few especially when you don't count the people who are lying to themselves and say they knew Lightyear was going to underperform.
I mean the first Minions movie grossed more than any Toy Story movie. I don't think it was that hard to predict that a Minions sequel would outperform a Toy Story spinoff especially one with a less child-pleasing dark and gritty style.
To be clear, I wasn’t arguing that Chapek was a liberal. I was arguing that the company, for the most part, is more liberal than conservative and creates more content and has more offerings that’s geared more towards liberal views.
Disney, especially ABC, has leaned to the liberal side for a couple decades but in the last year it seems to have gone from subtle nods that were apparent if you were paying attention to in your face scenes you can’t miss even if you tried.
Time will tell if that attracts more eyes or drives them away. It seems playing to the middle is being abandoned everywhere though so maybe it’s a winning strategy, news stations and talk shows have shown for a decade or more that there’s an audience if you only cater to one side, looks like Disney is adopted that strategy also.

The difference between Minons and Lightyear is like night and day.
Minions is a funny, lighthearted, comedy prequel to an already popular franchise. The setting (from what little I've seen) actually feels like it fits, the characters all fit from what audiences already know too. The premise is simple: Minions meet Gru, become friends with him, and have to save him.
Lightyear is a dark and serious prequel with some light comedy, it's based off the toy story franchise but with very little to actually tie it into toy story outside of its main character. The setting does not fit, neither with the Buzz Lightyear character or the supposed year (1995) the in-universe movie was made in. The characters do not fit from what audiences already know, plus the general premise of the film is a confusing mess. It's a movie, inside of a movie universe, that inspired a kid to get a toy astronaut.
So... Minions is apparently breaking all sorts of records for the July 4th weekend...
The sub-line summary says it all: "The animated tentpole confirms that parents and younger kids are ready to return to the multiplex in droves."
That sub-line from the Hollywood Reporter nails the exact point I was making about Lightyear's problems; parents were not comfortable taking their children to see Lightyear. That's a failing business strategy for Pixar if I ever saw one!
Once again a shakeup is needed, sure Pixar has always dealt with serious and touchy subjects, but Lightyear was too serious and cost too much money, which of course it will most likely never make back.
Have Pixar forgotten that their most popular and earliest movies were just as lighthearted as they were serious when making this?

$48 Million for the Minions in just it's opening Friday! And it's a 3 day holiday weekend.
Also notice the theater count. Lightyear is still in 3,800 theaters, which is roughly the same number as Top Gun, Jurassic World and Elvis. And yet Lightyear only made $539 per theater, which is like an average of only a couple dozen people sitting in each Lightyear theater. Yikes!
Minions: 4,931 Theaters, $9,755 Per Theater
Lightyear: 3,800 Theaters, $539 Per Theater
Maybe they thought that Turning Red would be more controversial than Lightyear because T.R. dealt with puberty. While the movie did have some nay sayers because of that, it certainly turned out to be way more successful than Lightyear critically and most importantly with the younger crowd. I still see turning red memes.
That's my only explanation as to why it wasn't released in theaters. I don't think COVID had anything to do with it cause I don't remember COVID being treated like a big deal when it was released.

I don’t think either are controversial. honestly I didn’t personally like turning red that much and will most likely enjoy Lightyear more when it comes to Disney+.
But I’m smart enough to know that Turning Red would have appealed to more families - the marketing is big bright colorful and fun. Similar to.... Minions.
Depends on how you look at it. Domestic box office which is what I look at, Minions come in at a low #65 while Toy Story 4 is #26 and TS3 is #32. No gotcha moment, just some facts.
No one wanted the Lightyear movie. I certainly have no desire to see it until it hits Disney+.
Of course I also won’t see Minions, but I do know the Minion brand is wildly popular, and reliable for being a stupid humour, child distracting flick that will let parents breathe for 1.5 hours.
It was always going to be a hit. Minions print money.

You were trying to prove then wrong, they weren’t. I also didn’t say you were wrong just that they were right. You trying to prove them wrong when they weren’t come off as a gotcha momment but thats just me
Also one can argue global is far more important given how it allows franchises that the domestic doesn’t care for to survive and thrive such as Minions, Transformers, Fast and the Furious, etc
Emeryville, and Burbank's WDAS, need to return to their old business model and print money again by making movies parents want to take their children to see for $15 bucks per head, instead of $8 per month for the entire family.

Just saw Lightyear in theaters. It was a bit choppy/disjointed in some parts imo, and some of the dialogue was iffy. There was also some "forced" comedy towards the first third, but it got better towards the middle and end. Visuals were pretty, despite the dread environment and planet.
Favorite character had to be Sox (the cat). His humor always landed laughs with me and also everyone in my theater. Kinda like the Forky of TS4, Jack Jack of TI1/TI2, Bing Bong of IO, etc.
The twist was interesting, I guess. Totally didn't see that coming lol. Felt like it was completely unnecessary tho for the plot.
The time travel stuff was kinda cool, since it was the plot device used over Buzz's many missions to get the hyperdrive working. But the thing with older Buzz, ehh.
Overall, it's an okay movie. It lacked build up, and making you connect with the characters. Usually with Pixar movies I have a desire to go see them again, but I just didn't get it with this one. I saw Onward literally a day or two before everything shut down, and I really wanted to see that again in theaters. But it's good to see a Pixar in the theater again.
Also wouldn't have gone out to see this movie, after all the bad opening weekend news and meh reviews and just wait for it to be on Disney+ eventually (and probably soon now). I have AMC A-List, so had to put it to use!
I also saw Top Gun: Maverick again immediately afterwards (thanks A-List!), and man that theater was packed! My Lightyear showing only had like 18-ish people, two parties with small children. TGM had mostly adults/seniors but also some families. It's just amazing that TGM is still going strong after a month+, and this was my third time seeing it! Just love it so much!
