Life’s A Beach, And Then You Run: A 2012 Marathon Weekend Trip Report!

Hello friends! Welcome to the story of my Marathon Weekend.

The Cast (the only picture of the 3 of us from the entire weekend):

IMG_5183.jpg

That would be mom (Kriss), my brother (Craig, aka Princes Craiggy, 25) and me (Shannon, 27).

This was my 6th trip to WDW, and 3rd trip in the last 12 months…lucky me! :sohappy:

Past trips include…

August 1995 (All-Star Sports)
May 2009 (Honeymoon at Boardwalk Inn)
November 2009 (Boardwalk Inn)
February 2011 (Princess Half Marathon/Port Orleans Riverside)
June 2011 (Split-stay: Animal Kingdom Lodge and Boardwalk Villas)

There’s not really much to say in regards to how this trip came to be…basically before the Princess Half in 2011, Princess Craiggy and I agreed that if we made it out of the half alive, we’d sign up for the 2012 Marathon. And here we are! Yay! :sohappy:

No problem with the questions! I did NOT run/jog the whole time. From the beginning of the race I would run to each mile marker, take the picture, and then walk for a minute. I also walked through (I think) almost all of the water stops - because I am not coordinated enough to run and drink at the same time  - and stopped for whatever character pictures I wanted.

Holding the camera wasn't too bad. It has a wrist strap so I made sure that was around my wrist the whole time and just tried to switch which hand was holding it every once in awhile. I felt guilty for sweating on it though.

Thank you for answering my questions!!! :) Don't worry I can't run and drink at the same time either..(I've already tried it)

Good to know about the camera..I'll have to bring the small one I have instead of my bigger canon powershot one.

oooh and thanks for the link you gave enchated_belle I'll be running the ToT race with her and this Hal Higdon training looks good! I am planning on running a 10k in june I'm pretty sure I'll be ready for that then since I'll be done with the c25k and will be finding a training program for that. So thanks again! :)

And AWESOME Villains picture! I have never seen Scar! I thought that was definitely the best picture you got!

Ooh the finish line is so close!:sohappy:

Aww that's so great that you found your mom as you were running. Nothing better than Mom Motivation to get you through the last leg.

Everytime I read marathon reports it does ignite a little spark in me to get back on the treadmill. The bad thing is I can never be consistent when I decide to run. I'll start out feeling confident and I remember how happy I was when I ran/walked 3 miles in 30min. Now I get to experience running in place on a virtual soccer field thanks to EA Active on my PS3. :D:lol:

We posted at the same time!

Excuse me...are you saying that your half marathon PR is 1:57?! Holy crap! That's awesome!

I used Hal Higdon's Novice Supreme training plan...it's the same thing as his Novice 1 training plan, except that it has a 12-week base-building period at the beginning, which I needed, because I'd taken sort of an extended break from running in the spring of 2011. Most weeks I actually did manage to get all 4 runs in, but not always. I maxed out at 18 miles, not 20 (there was a snow storm the night before I was due to run the 20-miler and I didn't want to risk slipping on ice and breaking my ankle or something). I wish I'd done yoga or some strength training in addition to the running because I think that would've helped a lot, but people only have so much time, ya know?!

Mickey and Minnie really are so darn cute in their golfing gear! I was so mad to see that they had just switched out! And I think we may have gotten your crappy weather over here in the Midwest...lots of thunderstorms today. :(

The whole thing WAS surreal...I can't believe it was only 2 weeks ago! It feels like it was months ago at this point.

Haha, I noticed we posted at the same time too! Yes, that is my Half Marathon PR! That was April of 2010 so it has been a while. I ran more like 3 hours in the Princess Half what with all the character stops! I am running a few races this year like I said and I'm registered for the Portland, Or. Rock n Roll half in May. I will start the Hal Higdon half marathon plan in a couple of weeks. I am so glad to hear you liked the plan. It sounds like you did so good! I am happy for you that you weren't dying after mile 18. Way to go girl, seriously!! *Cue the Rocky music*

Oh yes, yoga rocks!! I love yoga. I am doing some strength training right now too for a PE class in school. But you are right, time is tight and it gets really hard to find extra time to work out! I literally schedule it into my week, and I have had to move out of my comfortable time of day to run so that I get my runs in (i.e. I am a morning runner, but some days I am forced to run in the afternoon or evening).

Today I ran my longest run this year at 5 miles(plus huge hill). I am really enjoying running so far! I started a blog because I aim to run 1000 miles this year. Feel free to check it out when you feel up to all of the running biz again: www.onethousandin2012.blogspot.com

Woohoo, can't wait to hear more!! You're almost there, only 2.2 miles left! Piece of cake!!

I feel like that long out and back would take foreverrrr to get through. At least in the parks you have things to look at (rides, buildings, etc...) on the long roads you have.... nothing really lol

SO awesome that you saw your Mom! :sohappy: That definitely would give me a boost too if I saw my Mom or other family members there cheering me on.

Not too much farther to go!! Woot woot!!!! :D

it's better than being a Little Debbies fan girl. I'm excited to try out his trainings!

 Very true! I hope HH's training plans work as well for you as they did for me.

Loving the report! You've now motivated me to add "Disney Run" to my bucket list....now if my knee will just hold out to get me across the finish line!

Can't wait to hear the rest!

Thanks! Why not try a 5K? :)

My favorite part of this part of the course is the walkway to the Epcot Resorts and the Yacht/Beach promenade. There are always so many people cheering and clapping and really rooting for you!!

You're right that this is a great part of the course...we were lucky to be running on such a beautiful day, so that made it even better!

Thank you for answering my questions!!! Don't worry I can't run and drink at the same time either..(I've already tried it)

Yeah, the first time I tried to do (in my first-ever race in 2008) I managed to simultaneously spill water all over myself and choke on the small amount of water that somehow made it into my mouth. No more of that for me!

Good to know about the camera..I'll have to bring the small one I have instead of my bigger canon powershot one.

You're welcome! I'm an insane OCD planner when it comes to everything in life...Disney, running, etc. I feel like I have halhigdon.com memorized. Good luck!

Ooh the finish line is so close!

 I'm sure PS3 is a lot more fun than running on a treadmill!

Sometimes I feel like the only thing that keeps me motivated to keep running is to be signed up for a race - in my mind if I paid the money, that means I have to show up, which means I need to be ready to run it (right now, for example, I'm signed up for 2 spring races and am considering 2-3 more for fall/beginning of 2013 --> another example of extreme OCD planning). And I'm not gonna lie, trying to lose some weight keeps me motivated as well.

Of course I'm getting to a stage where I actually like and look forward to running, so that's helping too.

That is a seriously impressive PR! :sohappy: My half PR is 2:34 (I'm hoping to improve that time this spring), and my Princess Half time was like 3-something with the stops, just like you. As much as I love Hal Higdon, I'm going to try using SmartCoach from RunnersWorld.com for my spring half just to switch it up a bit.

I used this half marathon plan last year and liked it, but I cut out the 3-mile run on Thursdays because I didn't have the time or desire to run 5 days per week  And I did like his marathon plan...I felt like it didn't mess up my life too much and it got me to the finish line in one piece. Can't ask for much more than that.

I need to start scheduling that stuff in too. I have yoga on my work calendar, I just haven't had the motivation to go lately. I'm going to do it tomorrow...I swear!

Today I ran my longest run this year at 5 miles(plus huge hill). I am really enjoying running so far! I started a blog because I aim to run 1000 miles this year. Feel free to check it out when you feel up to all of the running biz again: www.onethousandin2012.blogspot.com

Way to go on the 5-miler! :sohappy: My longest run so far since the marathon has been 4 miles and it was SOOOO hard. 1000 in a year is a great goal...even with marathon training in 2011 I ran 732 miles (which I know because I keep track of it all in a Google Doc...because I am a HUGE nerd), so I could PROBABLY do 1000, but who knows?!

Thanks for your blog link! :sohappy: I love that this thread has given me 2 new blogs to read! (Yours and Kortni/enchanted_belle's). :)

I feel like that long out and back would take foreverrrr to get through. At least in the parks you have things to look at (rides, buildings, etc...) on the long roads you have.... nothing really lol

Have I said already that the out-and-back sucked? No? Well, it sucked. :hurl: But hitting the turn-around point was a great feeling!

And seeing mom was super exciting! When I saw her and Will last year during the Princess Half I forgot to get a picture and was kicking myself afterward...not this time! :sohappy:

I love that you saw your mom towards the end!

Can't wait to 'finish the race' Thanks for letting us live vicariously through you!

And thank YOU for continuing to read my ramblings! :sohappy:

Aw, i didn't want to stop reading but it looks like i have no choice. Can't wait to see the rest.

Oops! More soon :) Thanks for reading so far!

After passing the Boardwalk, we crossed the bridge near the Swan and Dolphin:

IMG_0391.JPG

The course took us past the Yacht & Beach Club Resorts and the International Gateway, and we entered Epcot through a CM-only area in England. I remember wanting to run here, but not being able to – everyone in front of me was walking and I couldn’t squeeze through.

Eventually I reached Mile Marker 25 in France!

IMG_0392.JPG

Marie was out, but I didn’t stop to say hi.

After taking the above picture, I turned the camera off and told myself, This is it. You’re going to finish this thing. Run it in! My strategy – if you could call it that - all race long had been to run to the mile markers, take a picture, and then walk for a minute (also walking through the water stops and waiting for any character photos I wanted :D), so by now I had walked to, I think, Morocco. I began to run, but only made it 2 or 3 steps before I pulled up lame. Throughout the race, I’d occasionally been feeling a small amount of pain in my knees, back and butt. I don’t think I mentioned it much in previous posts because it really wasn’t that bad, and if it did irk me enough, I’d slap some Biofreeze on the affected area and be fine a few minutes later. Really, up to this point, I’d been thrilled with how good I felt. But trying to run those first few steps in the 26th mile, I felt like I had majorly injured, of all places, the left side of my butt.

Oh my god, I’ve actually torn my left @#$ muscle, I thought. (I know that’s not the right way to say it, but you get the idea). I didn’t actually tear it, but that’s what it felt like at first. It was more like a spasm or something. I limped a few steps and after a few more spasms it eventually felt better, so using my Garmin, I began alternating run and walk intervals (run 0.1 miles/walk 0.05 miles) to get myself through the World Showcase. I’m sure I looked like a complete idiot, since during the walk breaks I was, well…rubbing my butt. At the time I didn’t give a crap what I looked like – I had to do what I had to do to finish, you know?! At least I can laugh about it now.

During my hobbling, I passed Jasmine in Morocco, Snow White in Germany, Mushu in China, and Panchito again in Mexico. I didn’t stop for any of them…I’d met them all before and at this point I was sort of bummed about how I was feeling and just wanted to finish.

I am really, really thankful that the spectator support was so great here. I mean, people were taking a minute out of their vacation to cheer us runners on (“Shannon, you look great!” LIES, ALL LIES!!). How cool is that?! It was wonderful and helped me so much during that last mile.

Upon leaving the World Showcase we were back at the tree (whoops, I cut off the angel):

IMG_0398.jpg

We left Epcot, and before I knew it, there was a gospel choir to my right…

IMG_0399.JPG

…and Mile Marker 26 to my left!

In the grand scheme of things, 0.2 miles is not a long way to run, but I was expecting it to take forever since it was right at the end of the race. So I was very surprised to round the corner and, what felt like seconds later, see the finish line.

IMG_0402.JPG

I started to cry a bit at this point. The whole moment was completely overwhelming. I was simultaneously proud of myself and in disbelief that I was actually going to finish...thrilled to be done, yet sad that the experience was over. But most of all I remember thinking “I wish that Will was here.” We’re both still sad that he wasn’t. Geez, I’m getting choked up again just writing this out! What a baby.

Anyway, back at the Magnolia Golf Course, Donald and Goofy had evidently stolen Mickey’s golf cart and changed into their track gear to greet me at the finish…it would have been rude not to stop for a photo. You can see in the picture that any sadness I’d been feeling had quickly disappeared. I was completely thrilled and grinning like a fool. This picture ties with the villains picture from earlier that day as my favorite from the race.

IMG_0403.JPG

And here’s my third and final video from the race, which definitely shows my devotion to getting character photos. In the beginning of the video, I’m getting the above picture taken. I then check my camera to make sure that the picture came out okay – priorities, people! - then practically skip across the finish line, stupidly raising my arms in triumph. This all happens in the first 10-15 seconds of the video.

Another neat thing about the video is that you can see the winner of the wheelchair – push rim division crossing the finish line as well! :sohappy: I remember seeing race officials unrolling the tape for her to cross but it didn’t occur to me why they were doing that until later.

So anyway, like I said, I crossed the finish line, where I started to cry again…and I am not a crier.

But I am a marathoner! :sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

My final time was 6:20:09, a 14:30 pace. I’d finished the race at 12:09 PM and had been awake for almost 10 hours.

Looking at my Garmin made me a little sick…when mapping a course race directors measure the roads so that the shortest path taken = 26.2 miles. Clearly I had not taken the shortest path.

IMG_0404.JPG

After crossing the finish line, I continued on through the chute with one thing on my mind…give me my freaking Mickey medal! I turned the corner and there they were!!

You are mine! :sohappy:

89678-1580-017f.jpg

After getting my official finisher picture, I grabbed a banana, a bottle of both water and Powerade, and ICE. Two glorious bags of ice. The pain I’d felt in my butt earlier was completely gone (and never came back), but my quads were on fire and even though my knees felt okay, I wanted to ice them just to be safe.

I made my way through bag check and was back in the staging area. I hobbled to the merchandise area hoping to buy the marathon sweatshirt I’d passed up at the expo, but the line was way too long. Pluto and Scrooge were still out meeting and greeting, which was disappointing. I was really hoping for a picture with Mickey and Minnie in their track suits.

By now I decided it was time to return to the resort and let the recovery begin. Of course, I’d walked all the way to one end of the staging area to look at the merch, and now the buses were at the other end. The walk seemed like it took eons to complete, but finally I made it to the bus. The CMs beckoned me forward to board, but all I could do was look at how steep the steps were and mumble “Sweet Jesus.” I had a heck of a time navigating those stairs…my quads were screaming at me. Good thing there were railings so that I could pull myself up.

The bus driver announced the order of the stops: Boardwalk, Swan, Dolphin, Yacht Club and Beach Club, and we were off. While riding I chatted with the girl across the aisle from me, a much more experienced marathoner than myself. She advised me to keep moving all day and eat whatever I wanted. :D Not a problem!

The bus stopped at the Boardwalk and I hopped off. By far the worst I’d felt during the weekend of the Princess Half Marathon was in the moments immediately following the bus ride back to POR after the race, as my knees had tightened up during the ride. I wasn’t taking any chances this time; the walk from the Boardwalk to the Beach Club couldn’t be that bad.

I slowly made my way around the lake, hobbling the entire way, and realized that the race was still going on! I cheered on the runners as I made my way to the Beach Club lobby, and was surprised to see that the sweepers were following closely behind them. It’s funny, when preparing for a Disney race you always hear about getting swept (runners must maintain a 16 minute/mile pace, otherwise they’ll be picked up and transported to the finish line), but the sweepers themselves always seemed to me like some mystical beings that may or may not really exist. But here they were, in the flesh, on their bicycles, wearing reflective orange vests. It was anti-climactic in a way to actually see them.

When I got back to my room (after stopping in the Beach Club Marketplace for some Chip and Dale pretzels, yummy yummy) I dropped my stuff on the ground and got more ice from the vending machine. At this point I was exhausted, sore, and hungry, so I’ll admit that despite having finished the marathon, I was feeling a little down in the dumps. It had been an overwhelming couple of days up until this point, and I was starting to feel sorry for myself again about being alone and sore. That’s it, I thought. No more marathons for me.

I grabbed my phone and my mood lifted immediately – along with my text splits from the race I had a congratulatory text waiting from Will as well as some messages from WDWMagic members! (Thanks Holly and Krista!) Technology is a beautiful thing.

Before I forget, here are some close-ups of the bling:

IMG_5451.JPG

I love that the ribbons on the Disney medals are so detailed. One side has the marathon logo, while the other has the 4 park icons along with the date of the race.

IMG_5452.JPG

IMG_5453.JPG

After checking the phone, I took an ice bath for about as long as I could stand it (10-15 minutes) followed by a heavenly shower, and then headed off to LUNCH!

YAY!!!!! Congrats on the epic finish!! I could not imagine finishing something as difficult as a marathon and not having anyone there to share your accomplishment with. I was sad for you!! You had every reason to be down in the dumps. Where were your mom and bro? I'm glad my message made you smile :).

I had the same kind of butt cramp during one of my training runs for the princess half. It was awful!! I had to cut my run short and after I stopped moving, it went away. Hasn't happened since.

Again, congrats on such an amazing accomplishment!
