Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Completely! I told DH that we have a few drink missions this coming WDW trip ... so, that should also help. I pitched it that France was more of a treat for me, but R&C (the pub side) and La Cava both have him more intrigued. Since we're hopping this trip and are going for such a short period of time...we should leave with some "unfinished drinking business." ;)

Yeah, my husband's birthday day this trip (our Epcot day) he has already said he is "drinking" around the world. ;). So my plan is for that day to be soooooo awesome he will be just dying to come back in October 2014!
Ohhhh I gotta make a list for drinkin' around the World for us all LMAO... I just hope Lapu Lapu's are involved!! ;) Hey, ya know what?? Maybe we should make a list for the men!!!! LOL

Well I tried to tell my husband what all sounded interesting and the stories behind them and he was like "Just point me in the right direction and i will try it. " So, basically he wants me to do all the leg work and him get all the buzz. :) I am with you on the Lapu Lapu's and anything cold, fruity and sweet!

My DH is game for trying most things as long as it isn't too fru fru OR he's had enough ahead of time to make him game for trying less stereotypical guy things. Ex. we were in this wonderful Irish bar the other day- a firefighter fave. We were slowing it down by having a few beers...mainly b/c they had Harp on tap (DH's fave)...and the bartender said, "Hey- let's do shots!" I think those first few beers and the frozen we had just before warmed him up for it...otherwise, I don't think he'd willingly do something involving peach schnapps.

See...just looks like a place where I could twist his arm into non-guy drinks...
9319414012_65d5dc99e5.jpg

Still... a list would be good. I think the master list can be broken down by regions...

MK area resorts
Epcot area resorts
AK
DHS
World Showcase
DTD
AKL & Other Random Spots

We could then break it down further by listing out resorts/lounges, countries/locations within, kiosks, restaurants, etc.

I mean, here's a pic from the Poly and their 4 signature drinks...

I know the Lapu Lapu, but that's it. Got this from the Food Blog's Monorail Crawl... http://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2009/03/26/monorail-crawl/

I wish they had a poster like the one that came out for the cupcakes!

I could probably get DH to drink the back scratcher...it's got Jack in it, so it makes it a legitimate drink. I recall getting this spiked root beer drink a few months back and he was all good with it once he found out there was a heavy dose of Jameson in the mix. He's a big single malt scotch fan, so I really think he might walk into R&C and just not want to get up.

The Seven Seas Lagoon Monorail Crawl

AJ Wolfe from the Disney Food Blog returns with information about a Disney attraction not advertised in the brochures!
contemp-laundry-ohana-starringrolls-backstageexp-114-300x180.jpg

Drinks Available at Ohana and Tambu Lounge
While we all enjoy hitting the theme parks for some great attractions during our Disney World days, there’s still fun to be had once the parks close! I’d like to introduce you to a tidy little excursion called the Monorail Crawl.
When people think about “alcohol + Disney World,” they usually have visions of drinking around the World in Epcot, fond memories of Pleasure Island, or thoughts of indulging in one of the delectable new menu offerings at the Mexico Pavilion’s La Cava del Tequila.
But the original way to have a grand evening of imbibing in Disney World was to visit one of Disney’s resort hotels around Seven Seas Lagoon. And if you’re going to visit one…why not visit them all? Thus, the birth of the Monorail Crawl — it’s a great way to resort hop, but still feel like you have…you know…a purpose!
Here’s How It’s Done
When taking part in the Monorail Crawl, participants can begin at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, or Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Have a drink at your starting point, then load up on the monorail and head to the next resort hotel. Pretty simple, eh?
Citricos-VandA-024-300x225.jpg

Jazz Band Outside Mizner's Lounge
You can even think up themes or games for each hotel, e.g. have a Hawaiian-themed drink at the Polynesian, a classic liqueur at the Grand Floridian, then a good old draft beer at the Contemporary (just be sure to do them in the right order!); or have three members of your party each bring a recipe for a new drink to sample — try one of the new recipes at each new resort!
However you plan to spice up your Monorail Crawl, be sure to designate a driver or two.
Some Favorite Watering Holes to Consider
Mizner’s Lounge at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort: This snazzy spot is the perfect place to begin your crawl. Relax in the lounge with a classic cocktail while you listen to some live jazz.
Outer Rim Lounge at Disney’s Contemporary Resort: This will take you from the Victorian decadence of the Grand Floridian into the George Jetson age! The Outer Rim Lounge offers deep, cushy chairs and an incredible, floor to ceiling view of Bay Lake and the Contemporary pool. If you hit it at the right time, you can even see the Contemporary’s movie on the beach from the Lounge! Click through images of the full menu here.
CW-Chef-Mickey-080-300x225.jpg

Outer Rim Lounge Bar
Tambu Lounge at Disney’s Polynesian Resort: A Hawaiian-themed paradise of a lounge, this one features live music from the islands as well as a big-screen TV (which could matter if it happens to be game day!). Schedule your crawl so that you can hit the Poly in time to watch some of the Magic Kingdom’s fireworks from the Lounge’s huge picture windows, or get your drinks to go and watch the Electric Water Pageant from the beach.
Remember, this activity can cost as little or as much as you’d like; you don’t need any theme park tickets, and you don’t even have to pay for parking!
Last Minute Suggestions
Here are a couple of suggestions that might make the Crawl even better:
  • Schedule this excursion when you’re staying at a monorail resort. As fun as it is when staying elsewhere, it’s even better when you can just monorail it back to your resort and head to bed at the end of the evening.
  • If you’re staying at another property, take a Disney bus or a shuttle to the starting point. You’ll be glad to not have to drive at the end.
  • Bring friends! While a small party is fun, sharing the Crawl with a crowd can make it even more of a memory.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!! This is just what we needed! I feel like all of this could be rolled into a phone app...although, my luck it would be strictly an iPhone app- LOL. Either way, I could probably compile all of this into some sort of a semi-useful checklist. I think we can also expand on it with the offerings of La Cava, some of the other things at R&C, and the beer options too. There's also the Epcot resorts, and a few other spots...but your research, my friend, has covered the bulk of the territory! YAY!!!:D

Oops, wrong trip report. :p

Well now I'm wishing I took pics of the other portraits. There were several in their lobby...and now I'm wishing I could remember if they were all in similar poses. Considering some of the wild history in the French Quarter, it wouldn't surprise me if they were packing some heat in their breast pockets. :cautious:

Still- this is such a great list...covers A LOT of ground. That is a great idea...a pocket guide to drinking around the ENTIRE World.

On a totally unrelated drinking note...but a trip note...I popped over to Michael's today to pick up some appliques for test shirts. So, I may experiment tonight. Of course, I chose Michael's b/c I thought I'd be buying 4-6 things and their coupon was 25% off your entire order (Hobby Lobby was just 40% off 1 item). I wound up only buying 1 item- so Hobby Lobby would have been the better choice.
