Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Hmmmmm...I can see it, but I think I may know the issue. Can you see this?

1070000_10201600554563817_1260721501_n.jpg

I protected the original pic on Flickr. It crossed my mind that my mom sometimes peruses my photostream b/c apparently I'm not good about sending them pics.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE that idea for MNSSHP costumes! Much more fun than the Batman family...of course, not my choice, but still. Feel free to share about any crafting insecurities:) ...I mean, I'm clearly terrified of my iron...and if you could see all of my failed "blinging" attempts----well, let's just say - DISASTERS! Maybe my mom was right...maybe I need to buy some cheap basic appliques to make test shirts first before I try and work with the girls' Disney shirts.

As for cake limitations, in these cases it would be better to modify my designs. I have certain elements where I'm willing to compromise or even scrap on each cake...but if they give me issues on too many of the vital elements...I have 2 more simple (and totally different) cake ideas I can present as alternatives. Hopefully I won't need to go that route.

I love the sketch! I don't see them giving you too much trouble. If they don't want to do the mini cake could you do a one layer with a mini on top? Or do you think they would go wayyy overpriced on that?

LOVING the Poppins cake sketch! I really hope they don't hassle you at all because that will be fabulous. Fingers crossed for you.

So glad that all the trip details are coming together so nicely. It will be so much less stressful not to have to lie. I'm still scheming to pull off a "birthday" trip this fall. Hope is not totally lost, but in the meantime I'm still following along with your adventures!

Thanks! My dad had suggested a Nemo theme since my mom likes sea themed cakes...so, I at least have a back up if need be. Still, hoping I don't need to go that route since I think this is a better plan.

No lies and they still should be happy and very surprised. Win-Win! :D I hope you're able to pull off a fall bday trip. Oh how I know what it's like to scheme for a trip. Thanks for following :)

I really hope there aren't any issues. While it's more ornate than a lot of the ones we've seen...these aren't overly elaborate decorations. I mean, some of the piping work we've seen is more involved. Usually when they do 2-tier cakes...it's a 8" topped with a 6". I've seen people ask for a 6" topped with a mini round and the answer has been no. I've heard that most 2-tier standard rounds start around $200, soooooo I think we'll be skipping that. :)

So, I thought I'd share some of our trip to New Orleans. I figure, NOLA and the surrounding areas have inspired both PORS and POFQ at WDW, New Orleans Square at DLR, The Princess & The Frog, as well as a number of other things in the Disney Universe.

Now, I post this portion of The Princess & The Frog since the wedding scenery from about 1:16 does factor directly into our trip...

The official 'human' wedding takes place inside St. Louis Cathedral. It's funny...we've been to NOLA a number of times, but this was our first trip inside the cathedral. So, on our anniversary trip...we kind of followed some of the path of Tiana getting married.

9315829977_7805119c15.jpg

9318602730_90e3d07bbb.jpg

What's really kind of funny...this next pic kind of give you the angle that the movie gives you as they're riding off in their carriage.

9315819815_ff93f8d07b.jpg

(it's me taking pictures of people taking pictures from our table at Stanley- breakfast)

Of course, all of the carriage pics I took were from in front of Jackson Square...so not right up in front of the cathedral like in the vid.

9316156531_8b6795e25e.jpg

While we always stay in the French Quarter, this was the closest we've ever stayed to the cathedral and Jackson Square. This was taken from the observation deck of the roof on our hotel...
9315777211_df082d3bb5.jpg

Speaking of hotels...I have to say, the folks at our hotel really could give Disney a run for their $ on service and value. Don't get me wrong...I love staying in the 'magic bubble,' but for less than the rack rate at a WDW value resort, we stayed at an Omni - clearly very well positioned inside the French Quarter. Yes, our room was small, but I signed up for their rewards program with this stay and got a number of nice perks...from complimentary turndown service to a nice morning beverage service. Speaking of service...I made a very brief note about our anniversary, and this was waiting for us in our room.

9322079883_a3227cd637.jpg

Yes, I'll take free champagne...thank you!!!

I had also wanted to get onto a St. Charles Street street car since that's what you see Tiana riding, but it never happened. In fact, all I got was a pic of a Canal Street car...
9316176921_415afdcf0e.jpg

Speaking of drinking...I think of WDW Magic folks like @DisneyDebNJ @figmentfan423 @Jessica Meier @littleroo and @Pooh Lover (to name a few) as we drank in what NOLA has to offer- LOL. Hey- it's good prep for drinking around the WS at Epcot...or the monorail resorts...or the Epcot area resorts (in fact, I'll try and remember a little side note on that at the end of this).

I did not take pics of our giant frozen from Bourbon Street, but I did get pics of some other fun drinks...

This, my friends, is a Purple Voodoo...
9315791769_2135f1f98f.jpg

...it's bourbon, everclear, grape juice, and crushed ice. It's actually VERY refreshing.

Now, we also had our share of frozen hurricanes, but we do like to have some purist hurricane moments. So, we popped into Pat O's for the real deal...

9318826378_de3f75dd36.jpg

In fact, it was one of two traditional hurricanes we had this trip. It's hiding off to the side of my bloody Mary in this pic, but this is another traditional one we got at dinner at a place called Olivier's...

9316625087_94211f469e.jpg

Now, most of our drinks were your average frozen or beer, but we did have one more "interesting" drink of the trip. If you've ever been on Bourbon Street, you've likely seen the Olde Absinth House. Well, while I'm not a huge fan of licorice or anise, I've always wanted to try this. I know it's not the same as the old stuff (i.e. that contained opium) and I know it's strong as heck...but it was all about the experience. This was actually our bartender doing our pour over the traditional sugar cube. We even got to keep the bottle! Nice thing, but this is one of those "we tried it" kind of things. And let's just say I don't seen WDW setting up an absinthe bar any time soon.

9324763550_63785da06f.jpg

Before I leave the liquor - I wanted to show you a bar that we absolutely LOVE in NOLA...
9319415770_bd63656cee.jpg

...and if it looks like a carousel, it's because IT IS! It even spins...very slowly. It's in the Hotel Monteleone (stayed there a few trips ago)...and while it's a well known fixture in NOLA...I think WDW could totally work something like this into BWI.

I also recall hearing that Dr. Who shirts were being offered somewhere in Epcot...maybe the UK area of WS? Well, not sure about the rights...but we saw the BEST BAR ENTRANCE - EVER...well, at least if you're a Dr. Who fan...
9318657184_c699c58310.jpg

OK...so what about food. Well, @real mad hatter - this is for you!

DH is not a fan of beignets, but there's really just something about snagging a table at Café Du Monde - getting a plate of beignets - a cup of café au lait - and just soaking it all in. So, if you've never seen or experienced it before... this is the real deal...

9318579948_8c9d48ce52.jpg

Yes, I know some people prefer Café Beignet, but clearly I'm a Café Du Monde fan.
9315786837_f5abe183dc.jpg

9318576448_2c541d479f.jpg

Let's just say I'd totally hit up the Port Orleans resorts if they got a satellite location of Café Du Monde!

I tried to take some other fun food pics and well as pics of pretty much everything else...but I don't want to bore you all with a ton of non-Disney pics. So, if you want to see some of the other trip pics...feel free to follow this link. http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/sets/72157634700889950/ I haven't added descriptions yet, but don't let simple images like potatoes and cornbread fool you. Those potatoes are from a crawfish boil- super spicy- and served instead of bread. And that cornbread...served in a honey bath- YUM! And when you can't decide between gumbo and jambalaya...why not try "Gumbalaya?!?!?!"

Ultimately, it's not my normal pic quality, but we got to NOLA- I grabbed my camera and realized I left my camera battery at home. So, I was left to taking pics with my phone. Not bad...just very frustrating.

One last thing...if you happened to read my last TR...you might recall that lighting was a focal point. I don't know what's up with me...but once again, I found myself taking pics of lights!

9315806791_48d7a32d78.jpg

9319414814_991c01d065.jpg

There are more on the link...but you get the idea. Seriously- I need to move on. What's really funny...we were in Harrah's, found this room that looked like a combo ultra-lounge/trendy gaming room and I had to take a pic of this thing...

9318669596_1fbcfc3a9b.jpg

Initially I'm thinking...ooooo- it's ONE BIG LIGHT!!!! Ya know, so naturally I had to take a pic of it. Then the darn thing turns off...and after a brief silence...the whole room erupted in song and lightshow. Scared the daylights outta us at first...but I guess the dj was testing for the evening. I got some of the test on video...

So, that's it for NOLA. You can definitely see some of the influence it's had on various parts of Disney. And now that I feel like I've stopped hemorrhaging $ (YIKES)...I can look forward to WDW...in EXACTLY 2 months from today. What's funny- I even met a local at a bar in NOLA and next thing ya know it- we're talking WDW and she assured me we'll love AKL. Although, it's kind of funny- she said they usually stay at either PORS or POFQ- even though she lives in NOLA, they love the PO resorts- go figure! Nice girl either way.

OK- time to spend the rest of the weekend 'detoxing' from all the food and drink!

Oh Sandy, it looks breath taking!!!!! (and Im not just talkin' bout the drinks!! LOL) The pics on your flickr are awesome! and the food!!!!! Yummmmmmm!!!!!!! :)

Thanks Deb!!! Thankfully the phone still takes pretty decent pics. It is definitely one of those cities where food and drink play a huge role. The good news...I think it may have also helped sway DH for next fall...assuming the budget can handle it (*this was what I forgot to tack on at the end- ooops ). At some point- while walking and drinking- I told him about heading to WDW in fall 2014. Then I pitched the whole - it would just be us (kids to grandma's), all of the drinks we need to try, F&W, etc. He said it sounded like fun and might be on board if the finances are good :D Sure, he was under the influence when he agreed to this...but he did agree! :angelic:

After seeing these photos,if I ever,( Yeh ) win the national lottery.Iam gonna hire a big motor home, you know the Winnie the Pooh bagel,or is it the Winnebago.Anyway,it's a tour of America.;)

With your love of Cajun & Creole style food, you'd certainly enjoy some time in NOLA. I don't think it's all quite as hot as some of the things you and @Bparso87 were discussing on the "It's getting hot in here" thread...but many things pack some heat. Ex. all that fried seafood in my Flickr set has a decent amount spice - i.e. peppery fry batter. Most restaurants in the area also have a few different bottles of hot sauce on the table in case you want to kick up the heat factor as well. Nothing too crazy, but this is my fave...

9318605432_16d65662d4.jpg

We have also thought about renting an RV to do a huge USA road trip, but I think DH fears having me behind the wheel of one of those beasts. o_O

Absolutely amazing pics! So sorry to have not noticed your pre tr before I'll try and catch up this weekend!

Thanks! Most of it is a lot of back and forth about cake and clothes. Just figured I'd share some of NOLA since there's a bit of influence on Disney things. Thanks for reading...now just a little over 2 mos until the start of the real TR :geek:

Looks like you guys had an awesome trip! Food looks awesome and the drinks look even more so! I have tried absynthe. It is definitely an experience. :) Those beignets look like little pillows of sugary heaven. Yum! Glad y'all had a great time and now on to WDW!!! Woo hoo.

It was a lot of fun :) I was actually shocked at the number of children we saw there this time. I've never been there over the summer...so it's usually a fairly grown up crowd. Not this time. Mind you - there are quite a few things for kids to do...but I'm always kind of shocked when I see people with young children & infants on Bourbon St in the evening. I also have never seen so many people in more traditional southern summer attire. i.e. the men in summer suits and straw hats. And as for that drink--- once was definitely enough...although, really funny...the variety we tried was actually made at a schnapps distillery we toured in Vienna, Austria about 13 years ago. It's like we came full circle! You live close enough that you might also be able to buy the beignet mix locally... otherwise... it is available online. http://shop.cafedumonde.com/mpr/mdb...etailHeader.htm&footer=detailFooter.htm&rno=6 I just don't feel like frying at home on that level. But yes...on to WDW!!! :D

@HouCuseChickie Yayyyyyyy!!!!! He will LOVE F&W! (we already know us ladies do!! LOL) end of Sept-beginning of Nov. *normally* has discounts too (except for Columbus Day weekend) I'm excited!!!!!

We will likely be looking at BWI or BC if we do this next year...and WDW is pretty good about discounting those lodging options... so, fingers crossed :D Of course, I'm also going to have to see if we have a bounce back offer that might cover some of that.

I am hoping for a bounce back too! May be the only way I can sway my husband to go in 2014!

I can see us all now.... OFF THE CHAIN!!!!! SOOOOOO many fabulous people here on wdwmagic!! EPIC trip to say the least!!!!

It would be EPIC!

Completely! I told DH that we have a few drink missions this coming WDW trip ... so, that should also help. I pitched it that France was more of a treat for me, but R&C (the pub side) and La Cava both have him more intrigued. Since we're hopping this trip and are going for such a short period of time...we should leave with some "unfinished drinking business." ;)

Yeah, my husband's birthday day this trip (our Epcot day) he has already said he is "drinking" around the world. ;). So my plan is for that day to be soooooo awesome he will be just dying to come back in October 2014!

I'm sure he'll have a great bday + that may help encourage him for 2014. Have you mapped out the QS along the WS that would be good "sustenance stops?"

@HouCuseChickie, the travel outfits are REALLY cute. Very tough call on the aqua vs. lime, that applique looks good on both, but I think I agree that the aqua has a bit of an edge.

Loved your TR-within-a-PTR about NOLA!!

Oh, and I am just completely in awe of your organizational skills. You may be the most organized person on the planet. :)

Thanks! Yea- the aqua on aqua is definitely how we're going to go with that one. I'm still torn on the chevron...it looks really nice on plain white...so I may go that route.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about the mini TR inside a PTR, but it really is funny to be inside the real thing and see how much influence it's had on Disney as a whole. I think this trip has also made DH more receptive to our WDW trip this fall.

Really? Wow- I always feel like such a disjointed mess...especially after seeing how many people make binders and such for their trips. This is good though...you're making me feel more organized! :D
