Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Oh my gosh I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It is gorgeous! Now I can't wait to see pics!
I get the Mary Blair flavor (he he) from the 40. Ooh, are those with the new pens? Too bad it wasn't fun for you, because it is a delight to see.

If I tried to design my own cake, I would cut out designs I like and paste them together. It would look like a ransom cake.

Of course...now DH got me thinking. After seeing my sketch, he asked "so the rest of the cake is going to be white?" In other words- I'm shocked you're not decorating every inch of the cake! He is right. I don't intend to sketch any more, but I think I'm going to throw in the following pics when emailing the chefs and tell them I'd like to see some of the more simplistic lines/patterns from the queue played out in silver/gold/white along the sides/back of the cake.

Just thinking that surely the diamonds, triangles, rectangles, etc. could easily play out on the rest of the cake and still not compete with the focal points of the cake...kind of like the way it plays out in the actual queue.

@ThatBrunette The silver and gold are from the new pens (I "borrowed" the girls' colored pencils and markers for the rest). I'm kind of shocked that uni-ball pens would produce the same effect as a paint pen...and for about $4 less. I'm glad you can see the Mary influence in it all. Some parts of the cake were definitely more pleasant to sketch than others. Some of that can also be attributed to fatigue. I was drawing from about 8:30-11p - give or take. What's funny...the idea of a funny ransom note cake actually sounds like a lot of fun...and is it wrong that I could see several potential bday/surprise ideas where a cake like that could be good? ;)

Itty bitty update...

I had jury duty today (yay me :bored:), but thankfully I got out early enough to get a bunch of other things done...among them, ironing!

Three out of four went on very easily...and of course, those three came from the same etsy seller. The one that had issues...the chevron Minnie. She was from a different seller and I could tell that the iron on adhesive backing just wasn't as heavy as the other three. So, now to decide if I hand stitch :arghh: or try the adhesive @englanddg had suggested. I'm leaning towards the adhesive and maybe just lightly apply it with a Q-tip so that it doesn't seep through and create any irritation issues. Then again- if I can find my sewing kit and happen to have red thread- I might just deal with the stitching.

I used it on the crown on the mickey head princess crown. Worked like a charm!
And by the way, LOVE the shirts! They turned out soooo cute!

It's just a little bit of the bow that won't stick- so I'll try adding a little glue tonight. Thanks! I feel like I want to applique everything the girls own now! :D

That's how I felt last week. I really DO NOT want to do this cake, but it should cover the cost of one of our dinners and some of our drinks last week. It also would be good for my portfolio.

Will the school permit you to give parents a supply list? The public schools and some of the private schools here have lengthy and detailed supply lists given out to all parents prior to the start of term. Sammie's school wraps an annual supply fee into their annual registration fee, but our previous preschool gave us a supply list similar to what Kendall gets for grade school. The other pro of a supply list- many parents volunteer to give you extra or ask what else you might need. Just not sure if this is possible in your school since they all seem to have different rules.

I love the shirts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I could get my boys to wear something other than Disney video game or ride shirts (they like the ones with the faces on the front and the butts on the back). A nice plain Mickey would be so nice for a change!

Thanks!!! What's kind of funny, I got my infant nephew a hoodie last trip that is similar to one of those shirts. The hood was mouse ears and there was a tail on the back. With the girls' shirts....some of it is age and some of it is Kendall. She likes everything cutesy and trendy...Sammie not so much, but Kendall can turn into a used car salesman when I need her to sell Sammie on something more girly. Of course, she also has some moments where she'll surprise me and come downstairs in a fluffy skirt and snag a pair of my heels. Crazy kids!

I MUST Be Stopped!!!!

Seriously! I was nosing around etsy this morning and saw a set of applique Mickey ears that I loved for a coworker's son. He's still a baby, will turn 1 in Sept, but one of the things my coworker enjoys doing is pretend booking his first trip to WDW. She had just stepped away, and I forgot about it by the time she got back...until later in the afternoon. ;) Before I found what I'd found for her earlier...I saw an applique that wasn't there that morning... and I know, since I went through that seller's entire etsy store. :geek: Said applique was a "practically perfect for Sammie" set of ears. As I've noted, Sammie is a bit of a tomboy and she loves her superheroes. Batman, Ironman, Superman, and Spiderman are at the top of the list...and just the other day...she took her faux web spray and webbed up the wall in their playroom (still cleaning that ). So, I saw these and I just couldn't resist...

Well, Kendall can't be left out and Belle is still her favorite princess, so....

(really hoping these pics work as Flickr is down :arghh:)

I know- I really shouldn't have. What's funny, I was going to skip it if I couldn't find a Mickey or Minnie applique with Belle and this was the very first thing that came up in my search...

il_570xN.446152975_c4p4.jpg

...so, I kind of took it as a sign. :D

I had already taken Thursday off next week so I could bake cake in the morning and hit the Disney outlet in the afternoon for some flip flops and maybe some bathing suits and tees. I have a plain white tee that would work for Sammie, but I'm not sure if either of the solid yellow pieces I have would work for Kendall. Have to think on this.

On top of this, part of me wants personalized shirts...of course, I don't own an embroidery machine. Of course I found this seller on etsy - which would solve that problem...
http://www.etsy.com/listing/1286127...type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all

...however, there's one other issue- my mom. My mom is strongly opposed to putting your kids' names on things. I know it's one of the cardinal rules in the "how to keep your kid from getting abducted" proverbial handbook. She wouldn't even share pictures of Kendall's bday cake from last year b/c it had her name on it. I told her it's really not a big deal, but again- she was all sorts of freaked out. So, maybe I should skip personalization + it would make the shirts eligible for resale if I skipped it. That's always a plus.

Now a little chuckle...this applique download came up in one of my searches. I know what it looks like to me and one of my coworkers thought the same thing. I want you to:

1. Tell me the first thing you think it looks like.
2. Tell me what you think it's really supposed to be.:p

That is a possibility. We'll have to see how well they hold up w/o the stitching for reinforcement.

OK...so, I took it upon myself to sketch tonight. I really was expecting to take several nights, but I decided that my sketch really just needed to be "good enough" to convey the point...especially since I have the other sketches and pics as back up examples. Let me just so that the Mary Blair concept art portion was a giant headache. Her art looks so simple...but I cursed at it even in the prelim sketches...and this- well this was not fun. So, here it is...the official sketch of my cake.:D

I like the enhanced version better, but the numbers stand out a tad better in the untouched photo. Oh well- I think it gets the point across. And now to rest my hand...I've got a nasty case of "sketcher's cramp!" o_O

Now to think about flavors!!!

Oh my goodness you are so talented! I love it. And I also am a huge fan of Donald Duck, especially when paired up with my favorite silly duo, Chip and Dale.

Okay. I almost died! Mickey in a diaper. Send me the link to the belle Minnie. Love it! What are you search words.
Mickey in a Mickey beanie and a Bane mask? I also see the diaper.

No, the images aren't showing up in the post but I was able to click through to the image. The Spider-Man was adorable!

My coworker and I thought it looked like Mickey wearing men's/boys' briefs...what it really is...get this ---->
MONORAIL! I guess it's supposed to be the very front if you were staring it down head on, but seriously...I don't think they really took a good look at this one.

I can post the flickr uploads after they come back up. What's funny is I can see them on my end, but I know the system is odd like that. I think she is going to go nuts over the Spiderman. I was initially looking at pirate ones, but I think this is an even better fit.

Thank you! That would be kind of funny if I had them place the Chip and Dale white chocolate toppers off to each side of the cake. What's funny...they are the characters most commonly dressed in the south seas room attire for IASW.
