Pre-Trip Lawdy, Lawdy, Look Who's Turning 40 - PTR

I was really tempted to call this the “What the heck are we doing?!?!!?-PTR,” but the reality…this trip is my 40th birthday present to me. Still, it’s one crazy convoluted mess, so at some point you’ll probably catch on to the reason behind the secondary title.

WHO...

Ok...enough about that...there will plenty of time to address the planning insanity.
If you're new to my reports, I'm Sandy...

9037036919_cff2edd2e5_n.jpg

I've been going to WDW since 1985 - even lived in Florida for a while. Soooooo, let's just say I've been to WDW a number of times. :D Beyond that, my 40th is about a month before this trip and this is my gift to me. I'd considered going on my actual 40th; however, I promised myself that our next trip would involve MNSSHP...so, September it is. And if you're familiar with the Cake Talk...I promise you....THERE WILL BE CAKE! In fact, there will be 2 CAKES! But more on that later.

Also, I'm usually the one behind the camera, so you won't be seeing much of me when it comes to the actual TR. Hey, I at least take TONS of pictures (like thousands!). And if you do see me, I doubt you will ever see my hair down since it's usually up on top of my head in the heat and humidity.
Like this...
9036986067_862e1be670_m.jpg

...although, I may add a flower to make it ... well ... cute.

Hey, we live in Texas so heat is our norm, but we also approach it wisely and hair up like this is a great way to keep cool when not wearing a hat to keep my head from baking in the sun.

OK, enough about me (for now)...let's talk about the girls.

284299_10201120529723496_1246768217_n.jpg

The brunette is Kendall...she'll be turning 7 about a month before the trip...and the blonde is Sammie...who will be turning 5 a little over a month after the trip. This will be the girls' 4th trip to WDW.

The girls are total characters. Seriously. Kendall is a drama queen, but insists she's no diva (yeah right!). I could be really mean and post a video of a more recent meltdown, but I'll spare her. Sammie is our tomboy and quiet little trouble maker. Just recently, she tried to see how much toilet paper she could flush down each toilet in the house. Too bad I noticed we were suddenly down 6 rolls AFTER her experiment.

Next up...DH...

He likes, but does not love WDW. He's made it very clear that he's bored with trips to Disney. I told him I'd planned this trip for just me and the girls, but he was invited to come if he'd like. Well, when the first of two SWA fare sales hit, I cornered him on the matter and he agreed to go. Ultimately, I think he has fun and enjoys seeing the girls having such a good time and experiencing new things as they grow. So, I spent several months of having this trip booked not knowing if he'd be joining us... and if things go well job wise...he may still have to bow out. Soooo...really, who knows.

Beyond us...

We are actually being joined by 5...YES 5 ... more family members on day 3 of our trip. My parents will be joining us along with my brother's family. They all live in south Florida, so it's a fairly easy trip up for them. Well, assuming my brother & fam are still able to make it come trip time. They have a bunch of stuff going on and while they've booked lodging and all have orders in for discounted tickets through their employers (perks of living in FL), there's still a chance they'll back out. So, if DH has to stay home and if they back out...we could go from a party of 9 to a party of 5. Insanity I tell you!

When and Where...
Well, the when is fairly drama free...

Sept. 19 - 23

I just rebooked our air, so our arrival and departure changed, but I think it's for the best...since it saved us an additional $512. So instead of arriving at 11:45a, we're arriving around 2:50pm. I don't see that being a huge deal. On the flipside, we'll be getting a lot more time on our last day. I think our original flight had us leaving MCO around 2pm, but now we're leaving just after 7pm. So, more time with my family and more time to play on our last day.

So, that's the when, but the where is complicated...and still bugs me. :(

We were originally booked at the Contemporary...my fave. I was hoping fall discounts would mirror summer discounts so I could splurge on night 1 and stay in an MK facing room in the tower...then switch to the garden wing...but NO...the Sept discounts did not mirror the summer ones. On top of that, Mousesavers (via Small World Vacations) posted some incorrect info on the discounts for the Contemporary. They posted that MK view was 5% (which is correct) and standard rooms were 20% (which was incorrect). I put off calling by a day b/c I didn't know what to do. Overnight, I decided to switch to WL with a 30% off discount since it's a greater savings and it's DH's fave. The % never came up when I was on the phone with Disney that day, but I had to call about something else the next day and found out that the Contemporary discount was 30% for all non-MK facing rooms. Unfortunately, everything in the garden wing was gone and a full trip in the tower was more than I wanted to spend...sooooooo, WL it was. I did complain to Mousesavers and they corrected the problem, but I wonder if I would have gotten the room I wanted at the 30% discount if they'd posted the correct info.

So, now we're staing in WL. Most of our trip was geared for staying at the Contemporary, but WL isn't a huge transition. We'll be staying in a bunk bed room with a woods view. I figure at least it'll make it fun for the kids. I've also asked for 5th floor on the MK side.

Far from a good picture, but we had a nice view from our standard view room the last time we stayed at WL.
5264648958_2f2ed4cf37_m.jpg

I know most people love WL and I shouldn't whine, but I really didn't care for the bedding on our last visit. The room also felt very cramped. Don't get me wrong, the resort is stunning...I just had some issues. Imagine that. I am also wondering how it will feel to have a non-holiday stay at WL. Last time we stayed there...we had a room over the lobby and this beauty greeted us every time we left our room.

5265579207_4f85628682.jpg

Still, we had a great time popping over for drinks at Trout Pass during our summer trip in 2011.... and clearly, there was no tree up at that point.

We are also going to try going stroller free this trip and should have less to bring clothing wise since it's a warm weather trip....so, hopefully that will help the room not feeling as cramped.

Honestly, the real lodging drama is the rest of the family. My parents and brother also lost out on the Contemporary discount, feel that 20% is too little for the Poly, and refuse to stay again at WL... so they're now staying at the Dolphin. Seriously---what's going on here!!!!????!!!! This is really putting a monkey wrench in all of our early morning plans. We'll manage, but not without certain people whining about it. I guess at least they got a really awesome AAA rate...like under $150/nt.

COMING UP...

Calling it a night, but coming up:
Dining
Cakes
Surprises - and to think I said I'd take a break from these
Special Goodies for the Girls
MNSSHP
The Tickets
The School Issues
...and a host of other things.

Thanks for reading :)

Well, that's awesome. Let him know I give him a three finger salute (it sounds dirty, but it's not...he'll understand).

I am familiar with it as my brother was also a scout for a while...although never attained Eagle Scout level.

It is for me too...keep me away from the art supplies and cake decorating stuff...I'll walk out with a bunch of stuff I don't need, and probably will never use! <grin>

This is why I don't get a cart or even a basket when I go in there!

And people wonder why I prefer to buy many of my caking supplies online. I have a local supplier that stocks many of the professional cake decorating supplies found at online sites like Global Sugar Art and Sugarcraft, but it's rare for me to set foot in the local store and not walk out with some extra goodies. I have a real problem turning down fun colors of luster dust and glitter.

It's just really hard to resist the lure of a display like this...

Isn't that the truth! So hard....
No buggies or baskets for you!

I would just like to note that this all flies out the window if you have to by cake pans. Do you know how much "stuff" you can fit in a large square or sheet pan?

On a cake and trip related note, I may have another cake order for early August = more $ for WDW! :) I also had a really lazy cake sketch idea at work (for my Disney cake) ... I'll have to share later.

So true, so true. It is crazy how much stuff you can buy in such a short period of time. I bought the glue and will report how it works when I work on some more shirts this weekend. Can't wait to see the sketches.

Nothing really exciting...it's just me putting the 2 older sketches together and taking a picture of them. :p If anything, it's just kind of silly...but silly enough (at least to me :D) to share.

I wish had enough talent to make a lazy sketch.

I'm sure people think I'm nuts running through the craft store. "One coupon equals one object...one coupon equals one object...Oh, look shiny things on sale!"

The strangest part of the sketching...if I can sketch it- I can make it. It's just this strange connection between sketching and sculpting. It's not nearly as important on a cake being made for me, but it helps.

I've actually gotten pretty good with those coupons...even if I need 5 things. I do a lot of self talk, go in with tunnel vision...get in and get out. If I need 5 things and it's a digital coupon good for the course of the week, I can easily hit Michael's or Hobby Lobby on my way home from work ... literally just off the highway.

@ThatBrunette we are all too busy being distracted by all the pretty shiny things too. Crafty people are a strange breed.

Shiny :)

Ok...so I didn't mean to get anyone too excited about sketches. All I did was put the 2 existing rough sketches together...

9265616146_cfcc60cc79_z.jpg

I was just thinking what I could do to really convey my point to the chef if things get too busy for me to do a formal sketch.

Speaking of busy, I will be taking on a cake project for August 4th and promised the client a sketch on Monday. he literally wants this...

It's not an overly involved cake so I may be able to sketch this and start on the formal Disney cake sketches this weekend, but it's a busy time just ahead...
1. I have to work tomorrow since we've got some products merging and I need to make sure several hundred accounts are ready before the stock market opens on Monday.
2. I have to start packing for New Orleans and packing up the kids.
3. I think Kendall may have a patch of ringworm on her leg  -DH doesn't think he's going to be able to get her into the pediatrician tomorrow morning, so I will likely have to drag her into the clinic tomorrow afternoon.

On a different note, one of the two skirts arrived...and three of the four appliques have arrived. I probably won't iron anything on until after we get back from NOLA, but I thought I'd share my preliminary outfit set ups...

9271359581_3b8e98fff0.jpg
9274148060_bc3866e796.jpg

So, I think they'll be pretty cute once I'm done.

The other applique that arrived is the aqua one with the peace signs. I tried it out on both shirts, but clearly the aqua is the winner...
9271356587_2842902079.jpg

9271353607_00f97fe98b.jpg

Not that the green is bad, but I think it just looks better with the aqua on aqua. I feel like the chevron one could look really nice on that lime shirt, but if it still feels a bit off...I have a white tee that will work just fine.

I also think I solved the footwear dilemma. I looooooove those Mickey crocs, and while even a good friend here agreed they were awesome...after an hour of "they must have them"- we both agreed that it's not worth the $. Funny how quickly we shift from 'must' to 'no.' :p So, we've still got the new Twinkle Toes and gently used nice summer sandals. I'm going to pick up some cheap Disney flip flops for pool time, but I still wanted a 3rd substantial pair of shoes that are good for parks and potentially moist conditions. I then remembered that Sammie's Keens are perfect for all of that and are still in amazing shape...
1307208-p-LARGE_SEARCH.jpg

Kendall does not have a pair, but we looked at some designs tonight and she wants one of these...
2176714-p-LARGE_SEARCH.jpg
2092112-p-LARGE_SEARCH.jpg
2092095-p-LARGE_SEARCH.jpg

So, now the challenge over finding them on the cheap. I got so lucky with Sammie's...got them on sale for an amazing price. I should have bought ones for K when they popped up on Zulilly a few months ago...kicking myself!

We also made progress in one other area today...

THE LIE WILL NOT BE A LIE!!!!:D:D:D

So, I had a huge revelation on what to tell the girls and how to pull off the surprise today. I just don't feel like I have the energy to pull off a full on lie...and now I don't have to. So, here is the OFFICIAL plan...

My mom's birthday is 1 week before we fly out to Disney. We will Skype with them that night to sing her happy birthday. In the process, we are going to tell the girls that as a gift to grandma, we're going to fly to FL next weekend to celebrate her birthday. And it's the truth...we'll be flying to FL the end of the next week and will be celebrating my mom's bday...among other things. ;) This is also what I'll be telling the teachers...so it plays in well with everything. But it gets better...

Now, obviously they won't be upset over this (like they would if I said DH and I were going out of town or the dog was at the vet)...so that's a plus, but there are other benefits. For starters...I can pack nearly everything without them getting suspicious. The other big pro...they will be willing to sleep in the guest bedroom so I can pack while they sleep. This is good b/c the guest bedroom is a much better spot for the actual surprise. There is a long dresser directly opposite the bed. The center is the perfect place to put my computer playing "Boo To You"- i.e. they sit up and see it right in front of them. On top of that we can hang up outfits they want to wear for travel before they go to bed on the knobs of that same dresser...so the swapped out outfits should be visible as soon as they sit up. I know this might spoil the Chef MIckey's surprise with my parents...but considering that morning will likely be chaos...it might just be better to let the girls know at the time of the surprise that grandma and grandpa will be joining us in a couple of days. All in all...I think it's become the ideal plan.

YOU JUST INVITED YOURSELF ON MY VACATION!?!?!!??!?!?!

Had to share this as well...we have some family friends that also live in FL...known them since early on in our NJ days. My parents saw them last week and when she mentioned this trip...the wife said I should get in touch with their daughter so they can meet up with us there. We'd go from a party of 9 to possibly a party of 20 if I did this! Plus, while they are dear sweet people, they are late to everything- horribly disorganized- and create chaos. My parents don't think I'm going to invite them- which is good, but if asked down the road...my official answer "I guess my mom forgot to tell me."

OK- that's all for now...gotta get in some kind of workout before bed.

So sorry to hear about the ringworm. Other than being icky and itchy, it should be easy to clear up.

Are you going for the colorful or the silver and white? How much lead time do the bakers at Disney need for your designs?

YOU JUST INVITED YOURSELF ON MY VACATION!?!?!!??!?!?!

My SIL has done this and I go from being a normal over-planner to crazy lady over-planner. She didn't want to do the work or listen to my advice. She wanted the deluxe dining plan but didn't want to make ADRs. (they ended up with extra dining credits) She also didn't like the ADRs I made. I'm going to stop before I get bitter...again. :p

If you do decide to include the extras on your planning, my suggestion is to make one ADR for the entire group. Maybe. You can let them know your plans but don't get sucked into making their plans. "Golly, I've already made my reservations. Golly, you should call to see if they can fit you in."

Outfits are adorable! Love that you don't have to lie! And of course I love the cake sketch. :)

Thanks! I really like how the outfits have come together. Now I just need to get the courage to grab that iron ;) I'm also happy about this new plan...it's so much easier when it's not a massive lie. The good news with the sketch...we were done with all of our work this morning after about 45 min. So, I sat around until nearly 11am chit chatting away and making the Man of Steel sketch. Soooooo, I can start working on my cake sketches this evening. :)

Not too thrilled about the ringworm. Kendall got it back when she was 3 and it took nearly four weeks for it to clear up. The nurse we saw at the clinic today said about 4-6 weeks :( I guess at least she's got no discomfort.

As for the cake...the queue décor details on the actual cake part with be in the silver/white/gold motif i.e. like the current WDW queue, but the buildings from Mary Blair's inspiration art - which will go on the cake board around the cake base circumference- will be in full color.

Custom cake orders can be submitted as little as 48 hrs in advance...but...it's recommended to get the order in about 2 weeks out from the date that you need it. They can take orders as far as 6 months in advance, but it's not advised since cake orders placed too far in advance have a higher chance of falling through the cracks. I normally reach out to the chef about 3 weeks out to hash out details, but I'm pushing for mid-Aug here since 1) I've never seen anyone request anything like this 2) there may be some limitations that we need to hash out 3) if it's a no-go on too many things, I'm going to have to put together a plan b sketch and try and fall in love with it. o_O

I'm so mixed about these people. On one hand...they know Disney and they know travel. The mom is a travel agent and I've seen enough of their full-on family vacay pics and day trips/weekend trips to WDW (or land/sea) to feel confident that they at least sort of know what they're doing. On the flip side...pictures can be deceiving. These people are so much fun and we've known them since I was 5 or 6 years old, but they are the "kiss of chaos." It's hard to describe. I do like the idea of 1 group ADR if we were all to have one meal together....and we could stick with Via Napoli at 11:30a if it is JUST the mother, father, daughter and her husband and son. BUT...if the other sister, her kids, spouse, and aunt come along (which could very well happen- with no notice ), that would severely limit our options. Biergarten, Coral Reef or Marrakesh could accommodate a party that large on that date (at least for right now), but I've been to all 3 and had my heart set on pizza.

While I think it "could" be fun and definitely memorable to have a WDW meal where you're a party of 20...I think I'm just going to go with my mom's suggestion and just not reach out to them. I started flashing back to a FL vacay where we met up with them on Sanibel Island and wound up eating all of our meals apart b/c they could never get it together in time...for anything. So, great people- but I don't need the chaos. ;)

I totally got the spirit of Mary Blair from your drawing. I am fascinated by the process. You are inspiring me to be more crafty.

I'm just really hoping both chefs will give the green light on the cakes. I'm going to address my fears with the mini cake in my next post. I swear though...the whole crafty thing is a blessing and a curse. Any ideas on what kinds of crafting you might want to do?

I decided to take on the smaller sketch...my mom's cake. It's kind of tough to take pictures of sketches...especially at night. This was the best pic I could get in current conditions.

9281935092_ba689db907_z.jpg

I may try and take a better pic of it in better light when the kids are at school, but you get the idea. My biggest fear with this cake is them telling me it's too much for a mini-wedding cake. We've seen a small handful of heavily decorated mini-wedding cakes, so I'm going to be optimistic. I'm also planning on getting quotes from both the GF and the Contemporary. It's for our 'Ohana dinner...so, it should be the GF making the cake...BUT- if the Contemporary gives me a better quote/less resistance...I'll see if I can pick it up from The Wave.

I probably won't get to start on the sketch for my cake until next weekend and I expect that to take a while... but at least this sketch is done. :)

Currently, I am working one elements for our MNSSHP costume. (Shhh, we're going as the Beagle Boys.) I am working on linen money bags and the 167 numbering for the boy's shirts and I'm in the rough-idea mode for hand props. Enough about me. I don't want to hijack your thread with my craft insecurities.

Flickr ate your cake picture.(It doesn't show up)

If they are unable to do your design, are you able to create the elements at home and have the WDW bakers create the frame for them?

Hmmmmm...I can see it, but I think I may know the issue. Can you see this?

1070000_10201600554563817_1260721501_n.jpg

I protected the original pic on Flickr. It crossed my mind that my mom sometimes peruses my photostream b/c apparently I'm not good about sending them pics.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE that idea for MNSSHP costumes! Much more fun than the Batman family...of course, not my choice, but still. Feel free to share about any crafting insecurities:) ...I mean, I'm clearly terrified of my iron...and if you could see all of my failed "blinging" attempts----well, let's just say - DISASTERS! Maybe my mom was right...maybe I need to buy some cheap basic appliques to make test shirts first before I try and work with the girls' Disney shirts.

As for cake limitations, in these cases it would be better to modify my designs. I have certain elements where I'm willing to compromise or even scrap on each cake...but if they give me issues on too many of the vital elements...I have 2 more simple (and totally different) cake ideas I can present as alternatives. Hopefully I won't need to go that route.

LOVING the Poppins cake sketch! I really hope they don't hassle you at all because that will be fabulous. Fingers crossed for you.

So glad that all the trip details are coming together so nicely. It will be so much less stressful not to have to lie. I'm still scheming to pull off a "birthday" trip this fall. Hope is not totally lost, but in the meantime I'm still following along with your adventures!
