I hate them, too.Thanks for the heads up...of course I have to go research it now! I always hated reading lists...either I already read it in 7th grade or it's some literary "masterpiece" that they think you should read....
I LOVE to read, but the books they give us for summer reading are TORTURE.
There's only been one summer reading book I even sort of liked, and that was The Color of Water by James McBride.
Here's a few others I've had over the years:
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead-George (hated it)
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park (completely pointless)
The Pearl by John Steinbeck (loathed every turn of the page)
The point of summer reading is to get students to read, but then they give us TRASH, and expect us to enjoy reading.
Honestly, I think they're doing more harm than good, because if the kids who don't read often are only given this filth, then they're going to think that all books are this bad.
