John Lasseter PERSONALLY handling a new hand drawn film about...wait for it...

This will be positive, provided Lasseter and Co. keep the tone right. The reason the older Pooh films tower above the new stuff (beyond story quality) is the tone and feel of the production. The slightly rough around the edges feel to the animation, the warm and inviting narrator, the commitment to the storybook pages transitional device.

I guess the best term is "quaint."

And I mean it in a good way.

Sounds like they want to go back to the pre-Pixar and pre-Stitch days when Disney shoved Pooh down everyone's throats.

Pun intended.

Seriously? More Pooh?

I expect something more original from John.

Agreed, but all of John's best original ideas are going to go to Pixar productions, are they not? Disney is going to be parading Pooh out there as long as the cash keeps rolling in, that's a given. At least having someone, like Lasseter, who cares about quality involved will keep the production above "Heffalump Movie" standards.

It's the same reason I'm glad to hear he's involved, even if only tangentially, with Imagineering. Better to have the artists on the bridge crew, even if the accountants are still the captain...

Please excuse me if this is old news, but I just read it, and I am SUPER EXCITED.

John Lasseter HIMSELF will be personally handling a HAND DRAWN animated film about..........wait for it............

WINNIE THE POOH.

When you can breath again, check out this link to the full article.

God, this man is gonna single handedly restore Disney animation to its former glory.

http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2009/06/pooh-in-its-original-form.html

Your first post and the article is alittle misleading. John Lasseter's involvement in the project is no greater for pooh than it is for any other project at WDFA.

The article makes it sound like this is his personal pet project when its really just him supervising like he does for ALL disney animation (including those tinker bell movies)

Other than that, I hope the movie is good though im glad its in 2D!

I sure hope they can get hand drawn animation back up and kicking again, instead of computer-generated.. this is great news.

OMG, same here. I really hope that the princess and the frog restores disney's tradition animation like cinderalla, and the little mermaid did. I hope we are about to enter another golden age of traditional animation. But sadly, I dont have much hope. I fear that today's generation only want to see the cg and laugh every few minutes and not feel the heartfelt emotion that a lot of the traditional drawn animation has I feel like this generation dont know how to react to traditional animation.

What I find compelling is that this could involve some of the techniques that have been developed for Repunzel. From what I understand it's amazing and a true "game changer". I don't know a lot about the Pooh history or story but if handled right this has mega-franchise potential I think.

What are you talking about? Do you mean Pooh has mega-franchise potential? Yeah, here's another obvious statement: I think these Disney theme parks might catch on, too...

Fairly certain that computer generated is here to stay. Even classics like Beauty and the Beast had CG sequences in them. So it's been around longer than most people think. Hopefully both can complement each other though and not become a full one on style vs the other royal rumble.

Let's hope having John's name plastered all over 2D Princess and the Frog, and 2D Winnie the Pooh, has a better effect than having John's name plastered all over 3D Bolt. I don't know how much longer WDFA can go on producing films that come in at #3 or #4 on their opening weekends.

Tongue in cheek, of course. John's name plastered all over it has nothing to do with it. His name is plastered all over the Pixar films that consistently come in at #1 on at least their opening weekends.

The real problem is not 2D/3D. Or whether or not John's name is on it. The real problem is the WDFA brand, which right now is about #3 in commercial appeal behind Pixar and Dreamworks.

Do you know what really irks me? People living in the stone age that are just holding on to all things that bring them back to their childhood. It's a selfish way to be.

Think about it this way. (I'm talking about the 2D vs. 3D argument).

When your grandparents and great grandparents were children...how did they like their animation? Oh, that's right...they were silent and black and white...(if around at all).

Then came sound...did people say, "I liked animation better when the characters didn't talk." or... "I wish they'd go back to the classic silent animation"

Then came color...

Again, who said, "Black and white was better and I wish they'd go back to what made them great!" Not many.

Then came the animation which applied depth...

Then came the full length animated features...

Then came major awards for those animated features...

Then came the CGI realm of animation...

Then came MORE major awards...for the CGI animated features...

Then came new Digitial 3D...

It's just the natural progression! Stop being so selfish and clasping onto things and let kids grow up with evolving technologies and animation styles just as you did! Stop trying to keep them in the '80s and '90s!

Sorry, it just bothers me a little. Pixar is doing wonders for the Walt Disney Company and to say that they should stop doing what is working and go back to something that is failing just because you want more of what you are use to...is just plain selfish.
