Is the clock ticking on the Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon at the Studios? YES!

I just noticed something strange when I picked up a full map of Walt Disney World at my hotel.

Don't notice it?

What about now????

I know it's probably nothing, but yet... I wonder.

They seem to randomly choose either the hat or the water tower for DHS artwork. If you look back through this thread you will see other instances where the water tower was used instead of the hat and none of these led to anything.

The reason it is there was for a celebration that is long over.

Actually, no:
That was the timely excuse they gave, but the sad fact is, with the real backlot business basically kaput by '99-'00, they had to change the emphasis of the park theme away from "Movie production" to "Historic movie magic, especially Disney ones". Which was symbolized by Sorcerer-Mickey magic--Since they weren't making movies anymore, you came to the park to celebrate old Hollywood, and movies that had already been made.
Which means Earful Tower didn't really make much sense anymore as the symbolic "weenie" icon of the park.

They did take the Millennium frills off the hat, though.

However, most uses of the Tower in advertising are only when Sorcerer Mickey is featured.

I like the hat - I have the smaller version with ears. Sorcerer Mickey is my favorite and my Halloween costume last year. So, please don't move the hat.

Can an insider here please clarify why the hat was put in the first place. Pretty sure it WAS for the 100 years celebration thing.

And sometimes the Hat is not included on *merchandise*, which is separate from the parks and I would agree that usually has no merit. I'm sure maps are separate as well, but it is curious (and NICE) they'd not include the "ICON" on a map.

If only they actually used the anniversaries as announcement dates ;) let's hope that changes soon. To me they are just the perfect time for announcements and debuts of new rides, etc. I don't get why the don't do more to A) celebrate and B) take advantage of them as opportunities to announce things

I don't know how well it's helping identify the park as Disney. I can't tell you how many people have referred to this park as UNIVERSAL Studios.
Wife - "What are those fireworks over there?!"
Husband - "I don't know, honey...Oh, that's the Studios...Yeah, that's Universal Studios!"
:hilarious:

How anybody could like the hat where it is after seeing this is beyond me. But to some, that's all they know as the park's icon. I miss the first picture :)
The theater is so small and hard to see. In that photo they had to get up real close to the theater just so it could be seen. The BAH is bold and and easy to see. It works much better as an icon.
