Is the clock ticking on the Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon at the Studios? YES!

The hat is still there because Studios management isn't ready to move it.
All involved at WDI have always seen the hat as temporary, and just like with the wand, they underestimated management's idea of temporary.

The hat is tasteless and tacky

Its a pin station for goodness sake!! The park as so many recognizable icons (ToT, Chinese Mann Theather, Earful tower) but nope they want the icon to be a pin trading center. I guess becaues Disney doesn't want ppl enjoying fine architecture they want to push gimmicks on guests.

There will be a huge smile on my face the day the hat is removed.

If they want an icon, then put it in front of the turnstiles before you enter the park. It will fit perfectly in the little horseshoe area next to the water. That way it wont distract form the architecture and still have a presence.

It does a spirit good to hear all this venom for that horrendous BAH/pinshack.

I do agree it has definitely more days in its past than in its future, although removal isn't imminent by any stretch. I do believe it will be gone within 18-36 months.

I know Bob Weis hates the thing with a passion because it totally screws up the look of the park he designed. I think Eric Jacobsen hates it because he designed it (he's done far more good for WDI than bad, but this thing and the wand would be his two greatest messes) and there are so many people hating on it that the sooner it goes, the sooner people will forget he designed the thing to begin with.

But WDI should have known better than to expect these giant cartoon symbols would only be around for a short time.

That's not how WDW Ops works. Indeed, while WDI may have thought that the wand at EPCOT was simply a two-year tops flourish for the Milennium, from an EPCOT budgeting standpoint the thing was planned to be there for a decade (minimally). So the earliest they really planned on taking it down would be sometime this year. You can thank Siemens for it coming down sooner.

At least I don't hear a lot of management apologists here talking about how magical the structure is and why it belongs where it is, maybe more people get it than I once thought.

Earful Tower, IMO, can't be an icon for the park again. It's hard to see as is, but when the Backlot Tour closes, it will really be out of site. Not that some of you can't see it from the park, because I know you can, but most guests would never notice it and very few people will photograph it.

Things like the ToT and RRC aren't good icons to represent a park, not like SSE, Tree of Life, and the castle. The hat fills that void.

I think if they were to relocate it, it would be neat for it to serve as a new entrance to Fantasmic. Not in a million years would they spend money on that, but it would be neat.

Before they spend money taking down the hat, they can spend it upgrading the GMR, possibly adding a new scene or two.

When I was putting together all the photos from 1989 that I used for my 20th anniversary post, I saw so many without the hat- providing a beautiful view down the Blvd. to the Great Movie ride and the Chinese Theater. How great it was to see the Theater at the end of the street. Just as it should be!

It was so to think about how that view is destroyed now. The crass commercialism of a hat- and a pin shop at that- becoming the Studios icon. How horrible!

May wiser heads prevail!

If the hat stays it should be moved to the animation courtyard area (not even sure if there's enough room there). The other Disney animation studio has a sorcerer's hat on the exterior but it is standing straight up. Another possibility is putting it outside the main entrance. Personally, I'd like to see the hat's removal coincide with a major refurbishment of the Great Movie Ride with the Chinese Theater becoming the new symbol for the park.

Oh my Lord, I am so glad Imagineering is finally learning from their mistakes. To the hat lovers, just like the wand it will go. The park was not designed to have a hat, it was and will be Better without it. Once the gawdy thing is taken down the Hollywood theme will be untarnished again! :sohappy:

The sooner the better. Put it outside the entrance toward the water. Better yet, put it in the water. :D

:sohappy::sohappy: The hat absolutely ruins the look of the park. And when you see it from the upper deck of the LMA theater, it looks even worse.

I myself would love it if they moved the hat outside the gates and did the bag check under it. It would be a far more aesthetically pleasing bag check cover than at any other park, and could still serve as the park icon without blocking everything!

They are. There are more suits for moving the hat than there are for keeping it where it is. It just needs for them all to agree ;)
Fantastic.:D
OK, don't hat the hat I just hate where it is. I do kind of agree that every park needs an icon so now the $50 question. Where do you move the darn thing to?
Either at the park gate,

OR..
Y'know, it would make the perfect entrance for Fantasmic...
EXACTLY. It fits the theme perfectly.

Bob Weiss is busy cleaning up a whole park full of tacky eysores (AKA Disney's California Adventure.) at the moment.
As for Jacobson' He needs to go.
