Is the clock ticking on the Sorcerer Mickey Hat icon at the Studios? YES!

It's 100% true. I don't care, at all, what Disney considers the "icon" to be at the studios. I really don't. In the other three parks, the icon acts as a weenie, but even the hat didn't serve that purpose, as you couldn't see it from most of the park.

I just want the glorious, perfectly reproduced, old Hollywood view back. Disney is (or at least was) the expert in placemaking....in transporting you to another world. They had done that with the original entrance street at MGM, but the minute they added the hat, they ruined that "place". At that point, you were just in a mish-mash of Hollywood-looking building and an out-of-scale cartoon hat.

Here's hoping NOTHING replaces the hat.

Can I just say, as I'm getting slightly peeved at being moaned at:

1) My first post on this topic was a picture of my partner and myself in front of the Sorcerers Hat, with me saying "goodbye hat, what will we pose infront of now!"

2) I gave no in depth opinion about the removal of it, nor any criticism of it or of other people's opinions of the removal of it.

3) I actually am open to change and am interested to see how it looks without it, for sentimental reasons I would prefer it to stay but it's no big deal to me.

4) I have no problem with the Chinese Theatre! Nor have I said it was the park icon!

5) read #1 again! I HAVE MADE NO CRITICISM, I SIMPLY SAID GOODBYE!!!!

With all the sh#t that life brings isn't it fun to visit a Walt Disney World forum!!! :banghead:

You did allude to that very thing with "I have many souvenirs with those icons on including the hat for HS not the Chinese Theatre"
I have a pin set of four pins one with the tree of life, one with the castle, one with Spaceship Earth and one with the Sorcerers Hat. I also have shot glasses with the same. How have I said the Chinese Theatre is the HS icon? I'm very confused. I put NOT the Chinese Theatre.

Does it really matter. Everything changes. I'm sure people have memorabilia of Tomorrowland back from the 70's, or Epcot back when it first opened. And some of the memorabilia of certain items no longer exists. So who cares? I'm so glad to get rid of the hat. It was large and garish. For anyone who had been to Hollywood Studios before the hat installation you will see that the entire Old Hollywood feel of the main street on the park was ruined by the cartoon hat. Things change....sometimes for the worse....but sometimes for the better.
In this case, getting rid of the hat is a change for the better.

The Earful Tower (The Water Tower) was the ORIGINAL icon...not the Chinese theater. That needs to be the icon from here on out.

This really isn't worth the argument, but either way G00fyDad brings some fantastic points down in this post, and this is coming from someone who never really minded the hat, although I never experienced the parks without it, so I might not even really be qualified to determine which experience was better.

@dave&di Same here, never experienced the park without the hat, (first visit was in 2004) but it will be interesting to see Hollywood Blvd fit it's theme better these days, but it is a shame they aren't willing to move the hat somewhere near Fantasmic, which might not speak wonders for the fate of that show.

Anyway, just like you, I'll miss the hat, but it will be very interesting to see it how it was back on opening day.

Guys guys guys... Can we just relax for a moment and enjoy this gem of a photo sarcastically proposing a new home for the hat that I found over on the "Spirit" thread?

Are there any plans to put something in place of the Hat? They've had so many stage shows in front of it with temporary stages, will they maybe add some kind of permanent stage like in front of Cinderella Castle? Also is there any indication this will be finished before Star Wars Weekend, I imagine that will be a big deal this year with the new movie coming
I heard they were going to build a giant 35mm Panavision camera on a giant tripod. It will be located on a slowly rotating 360 degree turntable in front of the Chinese theater. Guests will be able to enter the giant camera and learn about the history of Panavision as well as see a demonstration of how Panavision works.

But as a visitor from 2008 onwards the hat is all I know. I have many souvenirs with those icons on including the hat for HS not the Chinese Theatre so the company must have intended the hat to be symbol of HS until now. Personally I don't see what's so amazing about the Chinese Theatre to make me want to pose in front of it!

The park is meant to evoke the Hollywood of old. After the hat is removed it still will have been without the hat longer than with it. I'm glad that the hat's presence isn't based on your opinion alone. Before the removal of the wand from SSE or the cake from Cimderella's Castle, I cringe at the thought that those shouldn't be removed because that is all some guests knew.

For me, I have stated I like it, just not when it is obstructing the view of the Chinese Theatre.
