Is Spain In Epcot's Future?

Egypt would be insanely fun, but I'm not sure how much money they'd be willing to pump into an American pavilion what with them not really liking us all that much right now.

Not only that, but Disney will probably only add politically stable countries... I remember original drawings of a Venezuela pavilion which, to me, doesn't seem to have a very stable Govt in charge.

I'm not sure who you mean by "them," but Egypt has had a great relationship with the United States and the UN for quite a while now.

Glad you like the avatar.

They have a working relationship with us but they're allies with Palestine and have been very upset at our Middle East involvement as of late. I'm not going to get involved in a political debate right now, but suffice it to say they're not our best friends.

Would that keep them from sponsoring a pavilion? I don't know, but I'd love to see it happen. Can you imagine how much fun a ride through an ancient pyramid and the history of Egypt would be? That has the potential to be one of the most fun rides in the park.

I think the question is what would make them sponsor a pavilion? Egypt's biggest industry is the Suez Canal. Not much help for that in an EPCOT pavilion. Their second biggest industry is tourism. That would appear to have potential, but would it be cost effective, or would other means of promotion work better? Do they have any corporation that would step up and help with some cash? It's a far different world than it was 25 years ago when the park was built, and even then attractions were scaled back or axed for lack of sponsors.

I believe that, with the exception of Morocco, every pavillion is sponsored by a company or organization, not by a government. Thus, it's not so much an issue of a poor vs. rich country, but of finding a country PLUS a company that is willing to sponsor the pavillion. I think that most of the agreements also contain the clause that, if there were a shortage of International Program participants, the company supplies workers for the pavillion. (I'm getting most of my info from a CM-only tour of WS I took in late 2002.)

The other information that I remember from that tour is that the WS was designed so that, if necessary, the service road that runs behind the pavillions could be incorporated into a guest area and new countries built along the road. I'm not suggesting that this is a good idea--I'm just spouting back what I remember.

You just jogged my memory. I rememebr waaaay back from park opening it was said there were plans ultimatley for far more countries than there appeared plots; well towards the 20 mark. Obviously the area around the park has become far more developed since then, and we still have empty front row plots to fill, but I do recall something along these lines. However, all pre opening paperwork from 1980 onwards shows nothing of these plans (BTW, this was for this park, not the late `70's version)

When I went to EPCOT in 2003 for the first time since 1987, I thought that the American Adventure was kind of a "waste" of a country to have in the WS. My reasoning being that the WS is supposed to be a sampling of various countries, so why do we, as Americans, need to have a sampling of our own country. I thought that that space would be much better served by adding another foreign country for us to see. On the one hand, I still tend to feel that way. But on the other hand, after visiting in 2003, 2004 and 2005, I have become accustomed to the American Adventure being one of the lands in WS and would hate to see it replaced with a country. But I think there is still room for development and/or improvement in WS. Adding rides to existing attractions would be nice. And, while I don't have a major beef with Spain being added, I would personally prefer one of a number of other countries (or more than one if space permits). These countries include Ireland, Greece, Russia and Australia. However, if rumors are true that there is an Australia section in the plans for Animal Kingdom, I wonder if it would be redundant to have one at EPCOT as well.

Indeed it did. January 15th 1986; 11 years to the day since Space Mountain and the CoP opened for trivia buffs. However, Life opened October 30th 1989, so this would have been the last empty plot new build in Futureworld.

Actually, if they could figure out how to move some backstage support buildings behind Seas, there's as much room between Seas and Land to build a pavilion as there was for WoL... There's a VERY large grassy area between Land and the bus parking lot. It's just ripe for a good-sized show building. (Which is why I was surprised that they built Soarin' on the Food Rocks side of Land and not Circle of Life side. They possibly could have avoided the World SHowcase sightlines problem altogether...) In fact, going by the aerial image on Google Maps, there's even already a small spur off the walkway where a path could lead up to this pavilion's location. Though I don't know where exactly the Nemo sculpture was placed around here.

You just jogged my memory. I rememebr waaaay back from park opening it was said there were plans ultimatley for far more countries than there appeared plots; well towards the 20 mark.

I, too, recall hearing about expansion into a "second loop" of countries. Not sure how/if it would work, though. There's a canal back there just on the other side of the access road.

^ Rob, sorry - I meant the last empty plot as in the last one they built; not the last available one. Yep, the Seas/Land is one of them, and technically there is still one between M:S and Test Track (squeeze in next to the outdoor track)

With Soarin` going where it went, that kind of obliterated the other empty plot. I guess it had to go here to use the Food Rocks / KK space for the queue - strange though that early plans indeed showed it to the North, next to Seas.

Personally I`m still waiting for another expansion to Innoventions along the original Communicore design brief. I won`t hold my breath :D

Epcot and Spain have been dancing around for years. Nothing new happening that I know of.

Sometimes Epcot leads, sometimes Spain leads, sometimes Epcot does the Tango, sometimes Spain sits the dance out; sometimes they both get chased by a bunch of bulls.

And how close did it come to fruition....

Must say it looked good next to Italy.

Please don't remind me.

I was very young when this was officially announced, and thrilled out of my mind. Concept art, media blurbs, articles--yeah, they were all released; but the pavilion was never built.

The Matterhorn would have been nearly "twice the size of its sister mountain in Disneyland" (according to one announcement).
