In Search of the Purple Cat & Other Wild Goose Chases

Introductions...and Day 1: Getting settled, getting snacks and heading Dowtown

Well, it's been about a week since we got back...I'm almost done editing and uploading pics...and I've channeled my inner Jennings Osborne and covered my house with lights as best as I can...so, I guess it's time to get this trip report rolling. I don't have many pics for this early section, but I promise you----I have a TON of pics...so please be patient.

If you had a chance to read my PTR, this trip was a surprise for my younger daughter's (Sammie) 4th bday. We also have a 6 yr old daughter named Kendall who got her own surprise WDW trip back for her 5th bday. Sadly- the surprise for Sammie kind of fizzled, but by our departure day (Nov 14th) they were bouncing off the ceiling with excitement.

First things first...I had to get our Daisy Doggy to doggy camp.

Yeah, the girls thought it would be fun to put an 'Ohana lei on her...that didn't last long.

There was MAJOR drama with boarding though...like, "am I going to miss my vacay for this?" kind of drama. Essentially, the girl who took my reservation booked me for October instead of November, and they were booked solid b/c my dates included Thanksgiving. It all worked out in the end, but it was a very ugly 45 minutes. Still, with the dog boarded, we were pretty much ready to go.

We hit the road from the Houston area around 8:15pm. The girls were so excited that they actually stayed awake much longer than expected, but they were both out before we crossed into Louisiana. They woke up each time we stopped for gas, but that was fine b/c it served as bathroom breaks for them and the people with the graveyard shifts at the various gas station convenience stores got a kick out of the girls' road trip bed time attire. They were both in Christmas pjs...Kendall an elf and Sammie as Santa. Kendall also had big furry bunny slippers and Sammie had her ladybugs.

I drove from Houston to the Alabama state line. I couldn't even tell you what time it was when DH took over for me. I went a bit crazy between eastern Louisiana and through Mississippi. I was drinking Diet Mountain Dew and had a couple 20oz diet Red Bulls + peanut butter M&Ms. Let's just say I was WIRED! Around midnight, several stations switched over to holiday music...so just picture me all energized, having a holiday sing a long in the driver's seat, dancing in my seat...and all while everyone else slept! Yeah- it's a good thing there was next to nobody on the road.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. DH and I switched off a lot after that just so I could get in some naps. The griping came as we got closer to Orlando...he hates tolls. Still, it was the sign that we were almost there. I was hoping to get some great video of our arrival, but this was the trip where nothing choreographed would work for us. So, you have a pic just before we see the glorious Maingate...

Even my first arrival pic at Yacht Club was pretty pathetic...

I guess at least the pics I was able to get improved...

What really happened, DH and I had a misunderstanding about signs, where to go and what I'd be doing. In a nutshell, I didn't know he was expecting me to navigate. I did take a video (deleted), but it wasn't fit for all audiences.

We parked my vehicle and went to check in. I didn't want to mess with the bags if the room wasn't ready. It was about 3pm and I'd listed our estimated arrival time as 11:30am when doing online checkin. Not sure if it helped, but our room was ready. Which was good because I was a little let down that the guy who checked us in wasn't very enthusiastic or personable. So, since the room was ready we opted to check out the room before figuring out the bag situation. i.e. if it was close enough, we might bring in our own bags. Too bad our room was a million miles away...I swear, any farther and we'd be staying at the Dolphin.

The room was really nice though...a corner room on the 1st floor with a quiet pool from our patio view and a nice water area and lush greenery from our two side windows.

DAY 2 - Is This What You Call Rest and Relaxation?

So, I built these first two days into our trips as easygoing days. We had some ADRs, but I just wanted to relax into our trip after the long non-stop drive. Day 2 was supposed to be a little more active than Day 1, but considering we never napped on Day 1 and let the excitement guide us...there was even more of that dictating Day 2. At least there was one thing I predicted well for Day 2...everyone would want to sleep in.

We had a breakfast ADR at Cape May, but it wasn't until 10:30a. The girls are usually up by about 6am most mornings, so even ultra early ADRs are no biggie...but at least everyone stayed in bed until nearly 9am. We took our time getting ready though, and Sammie decided her outfit required an accessory.

Now for the easy stroll over the Beach Club...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226189970/]

And we have arrived...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225115761/]

...and there was an amazing surprise awaiting us when we opened the door...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225113263/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226184098/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225106361/]

Yes...it's GINGERBREAD TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The heavenly aroma was absolutely intoxicating. And as a person who does cake work, seeing any kind of artistic stuff in production is super entertaining to me. I've seen the GF's house and the Contemporary's tree post production, but to see the carousel in progress (hehe...vs. Carousel OF progress...I know, bad)...well, it was such a treat. Seriously, my hat's off to anyone doing sugar art of any variety that requires a ladder! I've never needed more than a step stool. LOL.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226170042/]

I was clearly more entertained by this than anyone else in my party, so I did them a favor and went to check in for Cape May. They said they were running a little behind and we were a little early...so DH set off with the girls upstairs to explore, while I continued to watch the carousel assembly.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225095321/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226165742/]

What I really loved was that the pastry chefs were stopping to talk to people. So, we all got to learn a bit about the structure and production as well. I instantly knew that the posts were covered in fondant before scored and colored, but one of the girls working on it confirmed that for me. I also learned that in addition to the heavy molasses, ginger, and sugar (from the royal icing) I could smell...there was also some Grand Marnier in the mix to give it a bit of a fruity overtone. So, I guess the smell really was intoxicating! They said that the smell also dissipates after the first few days, so you're only left with a gingerbread smell at that point. Pretty cool that we got to experience it at this point.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226176960/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226180440/]

I could have watched longer, but the fam rejoined me and shortly after - the buzzer went off. Time for our first true character meal of this trip.

Super cool you got to see them putting together the carousel! The details that go into some of the creations at WDW, be it christmas decorations or details in the rides , shows, etc.. are just amazing. So much talent there it's ridiculous!

Glad Sammie did well at T-Rex. I've never been but it seems like itcould be a bit intimidating. Those dinos look BIG!!

Sandy, I'm LOVING this report! Your girls are adorable (I love the name Kendall).

I feel like your balloon episode is why my mother never wanted me to have balloons at Disney.. so much hassle! But it's a trade off because they're so much fun, hahha.

Looking forward to more pictures and more adventures. And more light fixtures!

I was definitely one of the more unexpected treats of our trip. I've got a few more pics of it coming up as well since I tried to chronicle the progress a bit during the day. Thanks for reading!!! :)

It really was amazing to see all of the little touches. We kept popping in to see what they'd added next. It really does echo their attention to detail seen throughout all of WDW.

The dinosaurs are quite large and there's just really no way to prep for that. At least she made it through it without running out the front door. ;)

Thanks!!! Long story with her name, but it's good b/c there are very few Kendall's.

What's funny- it's not the only balloon of our trip. Yeah- I'll be griping about new balloons in a couple of days. :D

I promise- lots of lights! Thanks for reading!

Loving your trip report! I would love to see the carousel being put together. I also want to go to the TREX but my kids want to do Rainforest Cafe. :)

I swear, I wanted sooooo badly to sample a piece! Thankfully, we have several Rainforest Cafes locally, so TRex it was! We may have to go back once Sammie is a little older and a little less fearful. Thanks for reading!!! :)

So, back to Cape May...

We are seated in a section pretty far away from the entry, but that's fine. We're in this cute sort of center row...

The girls were also super happy that they had paper down on the table for coloring.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225086925/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226162324/]

DH took Sammie up to get her some food, but I had to stay behind with Kendall and wait for the chef. After enough TS meals, you kind of get to know the drill. It's usually the same kinds of products each time that we have to avoid because of her allergies, still I really appreciate the walk through by the chef because you never know when some random item will present a risk. Soon enough, we were back with our first plate of food...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226154394/]

DH tried really hard to put together things that Sammie would eat, but she's hitting a picky phase...one we're not trying to foster. So, these are all "yummy" things that she may or may not go for on any given day.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226150858/]

I think she took 1 bite of Mickey waffle, part of a piece of bacon, and some of that chocolate chip muffin. Character meals make it tough as well because the girls get distracted. Every two seconds you'll hear "I can see Minnie!!!" or "Goofy is over there!!!" or "Donald's coming this way!" It's always been an issue for us with character meals. In fact, here Sams is being super distracted about the first character making their way over...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226142258/]

And the first character is....DRUM ROLL please...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226133846/]

I even wore my Donald shirt today because Donald is my fave...and it didn't go unrecognized. They had put a chair down at the end of our table, so Donald sat down with us for a while. Donald was also super excited about my shirt and insisted on a picture.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226129106/]

And clearly, someone said something funny...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225055373/]

Kendall wanted some more food, so I put together a plate for us to share. I found it odd to have asparagus with hollandaise on a breakfast buffet.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225053979/]

The bright side- I have complained in past reports that the hollandaise at Disney is yucky and tastes like the powdered variety. Well, I guess someone heard my gripes because this sauce was tasty and tasted homemade.

Next up was Goofy...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226124046/]

Goofy wasn't there very long...in fact, this is my only Goofy pic from the meal. Usually I'm able to get a few, but this time...just 1! Shocked.

Minnie came by next and stuck around a little longer. She was also quite fond of Sammie's ears.

Things were starting to wind down at this point, so I started taking pics of things around us...

And even a sweet message for me from Kendall...

Somewhere in all of this I also choked. Seriously. Like, starting to black out- choking on a biscuit. Thankfully, all worked out OK, but I had one heck of a headache and sore throat (on top of my already raw throat). At least I came back to see this...

Yup, it's bday cuppycake time!!!

I'd like to note that this is one of the best cupcakes we had all trip. It was just pure chocolate goodness!!!

And we soon had a chocolate covered Sammie! Fun for all!

She also got a sweet bday card from the characters.

They invited us to stay and graze at the buffet for as long as we could take it, but we were done. All in all, the food was good and DH was a huge fan of the eggs with chorizo.

On our way out, they were still pre-horses on the carousel, but they had something new and wonderful for all of us....SAMPLES!

Or should I say FREE samples. YUM! The girls also used this time to do some pin trading with the greeter at the Beach Club. Such a sweet man! Not only did he trade with each of them, but he told them that all of his pins were too big, so he offered them 2 for 1 as long as they picked some of his big pins. They were in heaven! Extra pins!

We had yet to pick up our mugs (got the DDP for free this trip), so we wandered into Beach Club Marketplace. We picked up our mugs, but also left with lots of stickers and a bday serenade. One of the CMs in there wanted the girls to have a supply of stickers, but they also had to name a best friend so they could get a handful of stickers for that best friend. Just sooooo nice! I hate to say it, but while the decor in Yacht Club is more to my liking, the Beach Club staff was rocking with the amazing service.

Next up...leaving the World (what? So early?), and a whole lotta walkin'

So, now that we have full tummies and refillable mugs...you'd think we'd probably want to go rest on our rest day. No, we headed to Walgreens. Yes, we left the glorious Disney bubble in search of a drug store. We headed back up Irlo Bronson - partly b/c it was our closest best bet and partly because the girls loved all of those storefronts with the big "things." Cries of "I see the wizard!" and "I see an eagle" rang out as we drove. I how many things were out on this part of Irlo Bronson. We'd stayed at Orange Lake a couple of times when I was a kid and it was like a trip down memory lane passing some of the older places.

Thankfully, we found a Walgreens pretty quickly. I got some cough drops and cold meds, DH bought a new electric razor (forgot his and didn't want to be scruffy at Cali Grill that night), and Sammie continued to get bday wishes from the Walgreens staff.

There was another pro to this little offsite venture...DH offered to take pics of the Maingate for me as we headed back in. We were definitely in a much better mood this time we drove through...

As silly as it felt, I really appreciated it as well. I mean, nobody likes being all cranky when they arrive at WDW! And this totally made up for it.

So, we arrived back at YC where things were starting to look a little more festive...

And Miss Sams got a ride on Daddy's shoulders...

We had received a text that our stroller had arrived, so we decided to pick it up. I took the kids over to check out the train while DH took care of that. I'd already had one encounter with the grumpy lady at Bell Services- so, it was his turn.

No idea why, but as soon as DH got the stroller...they all crashed out to watch cartoons.

I used the time to take YC lobby photos. I love the lobby, but was hoping it would be decked out for the holidays soon...

But I really didn't want to be hanging around the lobby all day, so the girls hopped into the stroller (just for fun) and we wheeled the monstrosity back to the room. Sooooooo happy that this is our last trip with a stroller.

Not sure why, but Sammie decided that this was the time to go airborn between the beds...

And whenever one does something silly, the other has to copy it...

Definitely time to get these girlies out of the room ...So, we headed out and headed the wrong way and what do the girls do ... decide it's time to pose on rocks. Crazy kids.

They also made me take a pic of the dead lizard we kept passing. I will not post that actual photo in my report, but if you really need to see the dead lizard that had the girls buzzing half of the trip...you can go to this link ---> http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224966891/in/set-72157632108185179/ I know- gross.

We headed back in to head out ...

First stop - Beach Club to refill our cups.

When arriving at BC we got to see all of the progress made on the carousel. Just amazing to see how far they've come since the morning...

This would be my last time seeing it. DH popped in several times and got to see everything completed...but no clue why he didn't think to take any pics!

So, we filled the mugs and waiting for DH outside of the restroom. It's times like this when I'd find myself taking pics of random wall art and light fixtures.

Our goal before dinner...check out all of the hotels in the area. We have already been in BC and YC, so that left BW, Swan & Dolphin. Plus we wanted to get on the boat as well. We would have made decent time had it not been for the ducks.

I don't know what it is with kids and ducks, but they just have to stop.

The duck wasn't shy...

And she invited a friend...

This is also them realizing that we weren't going to feed them.

So, we continued on our stroll...

Waved hi to a passing Friendship boat...

And looked how far we'd have to make it to come full circle...

UP Next- We stop at Boardwalk

Looks like you may see warmer weather than we did. i.e. highs right around 80. Still, it will cool off at night. At least it's not like the temps we had back in Dec of 2010. I'm hoping it's the only time I ever have to wear a ski jacket at WDW ;)

Thanks for reading!
And when I was there in December 2009 it was close to 90 during the day - I had to buy T-shirts and a pair of crocs, it was too hot to wear socks and shoes! Great report, BTW.

Love the trip report! You took some beautiful pics. Love the YC and the gingerbread house at BC.

Thanks! I really took an insane number of pics. I've been banned from uploads to Flickr for a while so that everyone can go about the rest of their online business at home. :D At least I got about 98% done before everyone asked for a break. Lots more to come too. Thanks for reading!

I'm in! Love staying at the Epcot resort hotels, so convenient. Your girls are adorable!

Can't wait to read the rest.

It really was super convenient. Walk to Epcot, boat to DHS, easy drives to DTD and Fantasia Gardens...pretty nice! Thanks for reading! :)

What a wonderful family and a great trip... I can't wait to read more.

Thanks! And there's lots more to come! :D

Great report so far, really funny! Love seeing all of those Y&B pics. Your girls are adorable. :)

Thanks! It's funny b/c I think we're also in comedy mode while we're there. i.e. life at home can be so serious, so even the humor comes out after the fact. Or so I think :D Lots more of the girls to come as well.

And when I was there in December 2009 it was close to 90 during the day - I had to buy T-shirts and a pair of crocs, it was too hot to wear socks and shoes! Great report, BTW.

Thanks! That's what I always hated about the FL weather back when I lived there and to the same degree- our weather here in TX. 2009 was a crazy winter...it was snowing in early Dec and mid to upper 80s closer to Christmas. I mean, it was 83 degrees over this past weekend...not exactly ideal for putting out lights. Thanks for reading! :)

OK, so picking up where we left off...head towards...you guessed...

Before we headed in, I snapped some pics of the hotels from across the lake. After just a day, I'd gotten used to seeing BW from the YC and BC area, but I hadn't seen them from that kind of vantage point until now.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8226011730/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224931055/]

Before we head into BW, a couple of regrets.

1. I regret not finding a way to fit in Kouzzina. After seeing how close it was and remembering how much I drooled over the menu...it's unfortunate we just couldn't work it in. More reason to return!!!

2. I really wanted to stop into BW Bakery for a cupcake (especially since we always seem to have leftover snack credits). The problem, I don't trust them for Kendall and I don't think it's fair to her to have us get sweet treats when there's no safe option for her. I know they make non-nut goodies, but they also have a rep. for refusing cake orders to people with nut allergies. So, if they feel there's too much risk with a non-nut custom cake, I don't trust non-nut items in the regular bakery. So, next time I need a plan!!!

OK...so, now time to head in...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224929191/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224927547/]

I know this is going to sound crazy, but when we entered BW...I realized that this is where we should have been staying. Don't get me wrong, I still think YC and BC are very pretty, but BW was this wave of childhood nostalgia- and it hit me hard.

As you may have seen in other posts from me, I grew up in NJ. While I lived in suburbia fairly close to NYC, my maternal grandparents lived on the bayshore and would take us to Asbury Park when we were young (dad also liked the boat show there) and my dad's side of the family is in south Jersey, so trips to Atlantic City and that area of the shore were also pretty easy day trips. Of course, I'd spend the most time in more central portions of the Jersey shore, these areas left a strong impression on me. And the decor and vibe in BW just screamed Asbury Park and Atlantic City to me...like I was 5 and somehow expected to look up and see my grandfather's face smiling at me. Ok- sappy, I know, but it really hit me.

It hit me even harder when I saw this...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224912655/]

I saw it and immediately, out loud, exclaimed "LUCY!!!"

Kendall saw it too and knew just what it was. With all of the hurricane Sandy coverage and seeing so much destruction - especially of places we knew, I made a point to introduce her to Lucy when I'd heard she'd been spared by the storm. Kendall got to see Lucy in person when she was an infant, so it made it even that much more special.

So, who knew a little version of a big elephant would make me feel like "home."

So, you're probably wondering why I didn't pick BW...I mean, surely I saw enough from pics. Well, it was creepy elements. And this is one of them...

And my child, the one who is afraid of everything, sits right down in the other one...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224910981/]

She thought it was a little strange, but not creepy or scary.

Sammie chose to snuggle up to DH, who oddly enough asked me why I hadn't wanted to stay at BW.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225979112/]

I started again taking pics of my surroundings...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225977476/]

...until it hit me that I hadn't taken any pics of their gingerbread creations that were nearing completion.

What I really wanted to see was Luna Park. The pool was a big factor in me picking resorts. I don't know why, since I always knew it would likely be too chilly to swim, but the big kid in me with a "healthy" fear of clowns said that Stormalong Bay was the obvious choice. The kids got their first glimpse of Luna Park and were begging to go in the pool.

I had to explain to them that we weren't staying there and were just walking by to take a look. Still, I was shocked that it was this pool that got the huge reaction from them. I mean, I guess I really shouldn't be...circus/carnival style theme with lots of bright colors. Still, I thought the ship and sand at Stormalong would be the hands down winner for them (probably when they get older).

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8224825363/]

What really shocked me ... the clown didn't bug me in person!!!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8225894120/]

So, we headed back out...lots more ground to cover...

I think we also passed 3 different weddings while at BW, so we were kind of ready to get out of all of that...and ooooo- first SSE sighting of the trip!

I have never been in the Swan or the Dolphin, but there was a time in my life when they were my dream places to stay. I remember seeing the hotels go up when I was a kid and those larger than life birds and fish just kinda spoke to me. Not sure what they said, but it was probably something along the lines of "Sandy...you need to stay here." Ok, seriously- they just looked cool. Unfortunately, double beds and corporate atmosphere made me look to Disney properties when I finally decided to stay onsite. Still, it was cool to finally go in and I really liked some of the things in both...

Yeah- no clue why I'm taking pictures of lights on swan posteriors, but like I said- I was crazy about light pics this trip. I guess at least this light pic makes more sense...

I also never really thought of swans as spitting creatures until now...

Next up, the Dolphin...

We had a small catastrophe when we first got in there. Kendall is terrified of escalators and DH was hoping she'd take the escalator with them vs. hiking the stairs. I didn't feel like having a meltdown, so I just told him we'd make it a race and she and I would take the stairs and try and beat them. It worked!

And once up at the top of the stairs...look, LIGHTS!

DH didn't like the ceiling though...kept saying it looked like a badly placed sheet. I thought he was being a bit too harsh.

The girls really liked the fountain...

...and it prompted a good discussion about why there are coins in the fountain. It would come in handy down the road when they called out a little boy trying to steal change from one of the fountains. They started screaming "he's stealing wishes!!!!"

We headed out, but instead of walking "home" - we thought it would be fun to take the boat home...all the way home...to ALL of the stops. Yeah- we're rebels like that. And here's our boat now!
