In Search of the Purple Cat & Other Wild Goose Chases

Introductions...and Day 1: Getting settled, getting snacks and heading Dowtown

Well, it's been about a week since we got back...I'm almost done editing and uploading pics...and I've channeled my inner Jennings Osborne and covered my house with lights as best as I can...so, I guess it's time to get this trip report rolling. I don't have many pics for this early section, but I promise you----I have a TON of pics...so please be patient.

If you had a chance to read my PTR, this trip was a surprise for my younger daughter's (Sammie) 4th bday. We also have a 6 yr old daughter named Kendall who got her own surprise WDW trip back for her 5th bday. Sadly- the surprise for Sammie kind of fizzled, but by our departure day (Nov 14th) they were bouncing off the ceiling with excitement.

First things first...I had to get our Daisy Doggy to doggy camp.

Yeah, the girls thought it would be fun to put an 'Ohana lei on her...that didn't last long.

There was MAJOR drama with boarding though...like, "am I going to miss my vacay for this?" kind of drama. Essentially, the girl who took my reservation booked me for October instead of November, and they were booked solid b/c my dates included Thanksgiving. It all worked out in the end, but it was a very ugly 45 minutes. Still, with the dog boarded, we were pretty much ready to go.

We hit the road from the Houston area around 8:15pm. The girls were so excited that they actually stayed awake much longer than expected, but they were both out before we crossed into Louisiana. They woke up each time we stopped for gas, but that was fine b/c it served as bathroom breaks for them and the people with the graveyard shifts at the various gas station convenience stores got a kick out of the girls' road trip bed time attire. They were both in Christmas pjs...Kendall an elf and Sammie as Santa. Kendall also had big furry bunny slippers and Sammie had her ladybugs.

I drove from Houston to the Alabama state line. I couldn't even tell you what time it was when DH took over for me. I went a bit crazy between eastern Louisiana and through Mississippi. I was drinking Diet Mountain Dew and had a couple 20oz diet Red Bulls + peanut butter M&Ms. Let's just say I was WIRED! Around midnight, several stations switched over to holiday music...so just picture me all energized, having a holiday sing a long in the driver's seat, dancing in my seat...and all while everyone else slept! Yeah- it's a good thing there was next to nobody on the road.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. DH and I switched off a lot after that just so I could get in some naps. The griping came as we got closer to Orlando...he hates tolls. Still, it was the sign that we were almost there. I was hoping to get some great video of our arrival, but this was the trip where nothing choreographed would work for us. So, you have a pic just before we see the glorious Maingate...

Even my first arrival pic at Yacht Club was pretty pathetic...

I guess at least the pics I was able to get improved...

What really happened, DH and I had a misunderstanding about signs, where to go and what I'd be doing. In a nutshell, I didn't know he was expecting me to navigate. I did take a video (deleted), but it wasn't fit for all audiences.

We parked my vehicle and went to check in. I didn't want to mess with the bags if the room wasn't ready. It was about 3pm and I'd listed our estimated arrival time as 11:30am when doing online checkin. Not sure if it helped, but our room was ready. Which was good because I was a little let down that the guy who checked us in wasn't very enthusiastic or personable. So, since the room was ready we opted to check out the room before figuring out the bag situation. i.e. if it was close enough, we might bring in our own bags. Too bad our room was a million miles away...I swear, any farther and we'd be staying at the Dolphin.

The room was really nice though...a corner room on the 1st floor with a quiet pool from our patio view and a nice water area and lush greenery from our two side windows.

It wasn't long before it was round 1 of main course food...

...oooo and we're in the farmhouse scene in the ride!!!

And yes, I'd take even more pics of these from our table as we passed by the main entrance area...

We were still having the hardest time getting Sammie to eat, but Kendall not only inhaled a drumstick...she wanted our fish! We liked the fish too...and the turkey...so we asked for seconds of both.

We'd actually get some unexpected help with Sammie and food. Now, I didn't take pics of the characters each time they came by (because they came by a total of 5 times!!!), but on one of Dale's trips by the table we told him that Sammie wasn't eating. He sat down and he helped feed her. Mickey also found out and tried to tell her she needed to eat as well. He also saw her birthday button on one of his passes and got all excited since he was celebrating his birthday too. So, we sang happy birthday to them both. I never really thought I'd be singing happy birthday to Mickey, but it felt surprisingly cool.

Dessert was also good. The kids had cone shaped cupcakes with frosting on top - so they looked like ice cream cones. The chef just made sure Kendall's was without the decorations, since they had some risk.

I'd also heard varied reviews on the mixed berry buckle with the fresh vanilla whipped cream...

...these things are usually pretty hit or miss with me, but I have to say- I really enjoyed it.

All in all, this was a GREAT meal! I was scared because I'd heard stories of servers going missing after the girst plate of food is served. Our server was WONDERFUL! He was attentive, super personable, and was very aware of the characters so he could get to us with food and drinks as soon as a character left our table.

So, we left The Land...

...because we had some unfinished business!

I mean, we can't go to Epcot and not ride Spaceship Earth! It just wouldn't be right.

At this point, we're just pretty much standing around in front of the fountain trying to decide if we stay for Illuminations or head back out and hang on the beach at the hotel.

Majority ruled and the decision was to leave Epcot before Illuminations, but I was granted one little favor...a stop here on the way out...

I was really hoping I could convince someone to try Beverly, but there was just one big problem...

...so, we just sampled a few of the other options...I got a pic of some of their holiday decor...

...and we headed out.

We had to make it through the Illuminations crowds since it was around 8:30p and the show was starting at 9, but it wouldn't be long before we were around the International Gateway and on our way out...

We couldn't remember if it was a night where there would be beach activites at YC/BC, but we figured the girls could just play in the sand while I watched Illuminations if worse came to worse. And when we arrived, the beach was empty ... so the girls took to the sand while I took the pictures.

Illuminations started up right after this and this was about the most I really saw either of the girls seem to care.

Yeah...they had other goals in mind...

And if you've ever wondered what it's like to watch the show from the beach area...not great. I think it's because not all of the show is visible from the area and music isn't piped in like you'd get in the MK area for Wishes. In fact, there were enough long lulls that I took more lighthouse pictures!

I guess at least the girls now knew I was telling the truth the other night...that the loud booms were just Epcot fireworks going off. I believe it was our DHS day...we'd put the girls in bed and the loud sounds from the salutes and other shells had them shaking in bed. So, now there was proof that they really were just fireworks.

I guess at least the girls were good with me taking pics of them tonight...

...and they also insisted on a windmill pic.

Now, I have no idea why we thought this was a good idea...but the girls were upset that we didn't actually get to ride Haunted Mansion earlier, so they asked to try again. So, we hike from the Peoplemover to Haunted Mansion because the girls are begging for the ghosties.

What's creepy...this is the photo I shot of them heading into the attraction...

It really IS your ghost following you home! Don't tell your girls...

We had a little bit of a wait for the bus, but nothing too bad + we got the most wonderful bus driver for the ride "home." As we were getting ready to leave, he started playing all of the automated messages on the bus. The one that cracked me up the most was I guess for Pirate's League and always obeying the code. We just were all laughing hysterically. As we passed the Contemporary, he came over the PA system and announced to the bus that there was a very special person on board. Turns out- it was Sammie. He told them she just turned 4 and was celebrating her birthday. He had the whole bus sing her happy birthday and then pointed out that she was sharing her bday celebration at a super special time...turns out, it was also Mickey and Minnie's 84th birthdays. he recognized a few other people on the bus...anniversaries and other special events and also shared with us that he was celebrating as well. Just such a special ride back to the hotel.
November 18th, right? My son just turned six on November 18th while we were at Disneyland!

That happens to me all the time. I'll get ready to comment and forget half of the things I'd wanted to write about.

We went with cheapo lanyards this time and supposedly that makes pins more prone to falling off...so does the girls bouncing around like crazy kids. ;) @Alison1975 got these really great pin carriers for their last trip. I will probably invest in some now that I know my girls are totally in love with pin trading. Starting with ebay lots is a really good way to go. I made the mistake of giving the girls a few pins that were good enough that they shouldn't be traded. I mean, nothing super expensive, but special enough that they were advised not to trade them (it will come up on the last park day of the TR). So, I bought an ebay lot filled with things they'd just love to give up. LOL

I didn't see any coconut free school bread, but maybe it's available upon request. It certainly can't hurt to ask.

We had great CM experiences this trip and the very best is yet to come. Funny how 173 seems kind of far now, but next thing ya know...you'll be days out and wondering where all that time went. :)

The pin bags were there best investment we made this past trip!

We're back and I'm all caught up. I'm glad you enjoyed Garden Grill. Owen expressed an interest in it while we were there riding Soarin' and Living With the Land. OK, he begged to eat there, and I had to tell him we couldn't!:( So I plan to try to get an ADR next time we go! Can't wait to read more!

Wow. I've actually heard Illuminations from Pop Century before! Quiet, but loud enough that I could make out what was going on. I always assumed it would still be just you were right in the park watching from the beach at YC/BC.

It did cross my mind...I remember taking the picture, looking at it before entering HM and being like what the heck?

Wow. I've actually heard Illuminations from Pop Century before! Quiet, but loud enough that I could make out what was going on. I always assumed it would still be just you were right in the park watching from the beach at YC/BC.

Now obviously, we could hear the fireworks, but as far as the show goes...we really couldn't hear much of anything. It was quiet enough in the non-big fireworks sections for the girls to wonder why we weren't heading inside. Now maybe weather conditions were a factor and maybe on a clear night you can hear it well? I just don't know. It just reminded me more of watching Wishes from WL...i.e. you can see the fireworks above the treeline, but that's about it.

The pin bags were there best investment we made this past trip!

We'll definitely be picking some up for next trip! Thanks!

How time flies...can't believe you guys are back! We've been in that position as well with the begging for Garden Grill. And while I'm sure walk ups can happen...most of us have other plans from the get go. Hopefully you guys can try it next time...it was a lot of fun! :) Thanks for reading!

So, here we are ... the morning of November 20th and most everyone is up and happy and ready to go...

The only problem...I wasn't feeling well, which was too bad since this was the morning I was willing to risk our CRT ADR and $ invested in it to try and be first family. So, that was just not happening at this point so now it was just a matter of pulling myself together so we could make it in time for our 8:05a ADR. At least unlike our previous MK day...the park was opening at 9am...so at least we'd have one day with a traditional pre-park opening MK experience.

I managed to get us out the door and out to wait for a bus...

While I felt like we were running behind, the reality is we had plenty of time. I mean, I think we were out there right around 7:30...and a bus pulled up in just a minute or two. YAY!!! A woman on the bus didn't grasp why I was aiming for 7am, but if you've ever waited 40+ min for a bus...you get nervous about getting out there too late. At least the bus is fairly empty, even after the stop at BC, because I'm still feeling iffy and I promised DH that I'd handle the stroller today...

It's very unlike me, but I didn't take a single picture until we were getting ready to go into CRT...

DH was supposed to check us in while I parked the stroller, but he didn't know if I'd intended to use DDP credits or if I'd pre-payed, so I had to get everything in order. I was nervous because I've heard check in order for that first seating of CRT often determines who gets a window seat for breakfast. We've only done lunch and dinner here and we've never gotten a window seat...so I was really hoping...and hoping the check in delay wouldn't hurt our chances.

I guess at least I hadn't slacked on light pictures once inside...

As well as the fireplace (at least that's what I think it was)...

It was also a pretty quick wait for our photo with Cindy...

Yes, unlike Akershus, I remembered our pic this time. What bugged me...once again, the girls were terrified to do the picture on their own. Their first time at CRT they were perfectly fine with it, but the 2011 trip they freaked out about it. I figured it was due to the heat and the crowd in there, but today it was cool and very quiet inside the castle- and they were still scared. Kids.

At least unlike our 2011 CRT dinner, we were allowed to go upstairs immediately and were seated right away.

From this pic you can't tell, but yes...I got my window seat!

And of course I take a pic of the light right outside the window!

Now, I had booked this ADR for Kendall, but surprisingly...the birthday girl was over the moon to be there!

(hmmm, got a much better pic of this light last trip, but we were also right underneath it back then)

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236267550/]

We had a very sweet server who was quick to bring the chef out. We had a few mix ups with the pastries, but they made sure we got a plate without the pastries containing nuts.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236262086/]

Snow White was the first princess to enter the dining room. After getting a really good Snow White at Akershus, I was wondering how she'd be at CRT...especially since our meetings were lackluster on previous trips. Well, it would be another really great Snow White!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235176745/]

Seeing that little girl in the Belle costume behind them reminded me...Kendall was all concerned about not wearing her Cindy costume...thinking it was required at CRT and all. Well, unlike Akershus and our previous two CRT experiences...there were very few girls in princess dresses. Still, they had fun being in tutus in the birthday shirts.

Aurora was up right after this and she interacted with the girls much more than the one in Norway.

On a side note...we are chowing down on that pastry plate and can I just say...YUM!!! I really would have been happy with just those!

I'm sorry...I started writing the reply to this second part and one of the girls spilled hot cocoa everywhere. Yes, this happened on November 18th. It's not actually Sammie's bday- we were just celebrating during the trip since her was right before the trip, but how cool that your son shares a birthday with Mickey and Minnie! :)

We were brought our food right after Aurora left the table. The girls had the typical kiddie breakfast assortment, but DH and I were very happy campers with the upgraded breakfast menu at CRT...

Lobster and Crab Crepes

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236232780/]

Steak and Eggs

Both were really good, but I made one mistake with mine...you really need to cut into the poached egg before eating the seafood on the plate. It just makes the flavors blend better. Also, another really tasty hollandaise sauce with it.

I got a taste of the steak on DH's...it was also very good. Good to the point that I'd be craving steak for some time!

All in all, this is the very best meal food wise that we've ever had at CRT. I was so nervous since our previous dinner was a food and service disaster, but this meal- ACES!

Ariel came by after the food was placed at the table. My hopes were high that she would be a good Ariel, but it was a similar experience to Norway...seemed a little nervous. i.e. hyper, trying to be in character, but not able to blend it with the kids because she was so hyper. It kind of reminded me of some of my more nervous stage performances back when I was singing...you find your tempo gets a bit rushed and it gets a bit out of control.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236226894/]

The reality...I don't think the girls cared. So that's at least good.

Jasmine came by next and she was probably one of the best Jasmine's we've met.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236222746/]

The wishing ceremony started right when she was at our table and she was so playful with Sammie. It also helped that Sammie was in silly mode and just did not want to shut her eyes to make a wish.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235154857/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235153245/]

The meal was winding down, but there is one other perk to a window view in CRT at this time of day...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236214592/]

...you can see that the park is not open yet...so you still have time to relax and enjoy being in the Castle.

Besides...Sams can't leave before she gets a birthday cupcake.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235148091/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235146249/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235144647/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235142799/]

I could see the crowd forming just below us...waiting for the park to officially open...so, we knew it was time to get going. At least when prepaying for the meal, you can just get up and go since your prepayment covers everything. Too bad I started feeling sick again right at this point...thankfully, it only put us about 5-10 minutes behind.

So, it's November 20th and the FLE official preview started on the 19th, so I think you probably can guess where we're headed now that the park is open...

I had really hoped to be doing this on the 19th, but I left the 20th as my back up plan in case it was the only day I could get a BoG ADR...and that's exactly what happened. I was a bit bummed at the time, but still thankful that after the 1,600 or so calls- I at least had an ADR. So, now after 2 trips of peaking into FLE construction... we were finally going to experience it all (well, minus the Mine Train) first hand!

We decided that Belle should be stop #1...and I will warn you now...I went a bit nuts with the camera!

Yes, I made sure to take lots of lighting pics.

I just love how well everything is themed in this section.

I'm still not sure Beast's castle works though. Even the girls wanted to know how we'd all fit in there for dinner when it looks like it's a mini castle. i.e. are we magically going to shrink down?

More little details...

I kind of wonder if they're going to keep little details like this around. Every child who passed by seemed to want to play in the bags. I snapped this pic of Sammie in them just before getting her to stop.

I think some of the attraction is that it looks so much like some of the well done play areas in museums and other higher end attractions. Kendall nailed it- saying it was like the Gullah home in the Children's Museum in Houston. Unfortunately, the things there are meant to be played with like this. So, I'll be curious to see if these bags remain.

It's not long before we're inside.

Now, we've all seen the video with the mirror, but I tell ya...it's pretty cool to be in that room and finally see it in person.

People are still being fed into the room, so I take pics as we wait...

And once we're all in, the magic happens...

While we were in the back, the CMs made sure the girls and other children were up front. It was so sweet to hear these little voices marveling at this mirror as it transformed.

Now, I've seen the video enough times to know it was the Wardrobe that would be calling us in, but I swear...I felt like a kid on Christmas when I heard her voice calling our group in through the mirror.

It was now time to start casting...

I took a lighting pic while they did the bulk of the casting...

Kendall is such a ham and loves to act and sing at home, so I was really hoping she'd work up the courage to try for one of the more key roles. She and Sammie were just so shy at first though and all of the bigger kid parts were given to less fearful children. They still have plenty of things for other kids to be though.

It's hard to tell from this picture, but Sammie and Kendall were cast as cutlery.

Unfortunately, they were so shy that they were the last children to be given a prop and by that point, they only had one piece of silverware left in the room with the wardrobe. So, they gave it to Sammie and asked her to share with Kendall. This would all be corrected once we made it into the next room (I'll explain in the next post), but for now...I'm operating on the assumption that there might be some fighting with the girls over the cardboard silverware.

Now, I was already contemplating trying to be selected as the Wardrobe, but I realized that being selected would also be the best way for me to keep the peace with the girls with their one set of cutlery. Now, the Wardrobe is the very last role to be cast and if you didn't know it, you will need to sing like the Wardrobe to get the role. Now thankfully, I sing. I've taken a break since the girls came along, but I used to spend my free time in rehearsals, lessons, and on stage. I certainly was feeling under the weather and was not in great voice at the time and it sounded like there were 3 or 4 other women competing, but it was still a success!

Yup, I was this!

Next up...more FLE exploration :D

So excited to see your Belle experience. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to stop in. One more thing to look forward to for the next trip!

It realy was fun. It's just so hard to get in everything. There are still a handful of things we're wishing we'd been able to do. Like you said...just one more thing for next time :)
