In Search of the Purple Cat & Other Wild Goose Chases

Introductions...and Day 1: Getting settled, getting snacks and heading Dowtown

Well, it's been about a week since we got back...I'm almost done editing and uploading pics...and I've channeled my inner Jennings Osborne and covered my house with lights as best as I can...so, I guess it's time to get this trip report rolling. I don't have many pics for this early section, but I promise you----I have a TON of pics...so please be patient.

If you had a chance to read my PTR, this trip was a surprise for my younger daughter's (Sammie) 4th bday. We also have a 6 yr old daughter named Kendall who got her own surprise WDW trip back for her 5th bday. Sadly- the surprise for Sammie kind of fizzled, but by our departure day (Nov 14th) they were bouncing off the ceiling with excitement.

First things first...I had to get our Daisy Doggy to doggy camp.

Yeah, the girls thought it would be fun to put an 'Ohana lei on her...that didn't last long.

There was MAJOR drama with boarding though...like, "am I going to miss my vacay for this?" kind of drama. Essentially, the girl who took my reservation booked me for October instead of November, and they were booked solid b/c my dates included Thanksgiving. It all worked out in the end, but it was a very ugly 45 minutes. Still, with the dog boarded, we were pretty much ready to go.

We hit the road from the Houston area around 8:15pm. The girls were so excited that they actually stayed awake much longer than expected, but they were both out before we crossed into Louisiana. They woke up each time we stopped for gas, but that was fine b/c it served as bathroom breaks for them and the people with the graveyard shifts at the various gas station convenience stores got a kick out of the girls' road trip bed time attire. They were both in Christmas pjs...Kendall an elf and Sammie as Santa. Kendall also had big furry bunny slippers and Sammie had her ladybugs.

I drove from Houston to the Alabama state line. I couldn't even tell you what time it was when DH took over for me. I went a bit crazy between eastern Louisiana and through Mississippi. I was drinking Diet Mountain Dew and had a couple 20oz diet Red Bulls + peanut butter M&Ms. Let's just say I was WIRED! Around midnight, several stations switched over to holiday music...so just picture me all energized, having a holiday sing a long in the driver's seat, dancing in my seat...and all while everyone else slept! Yeah- it's a good thing there was next to nobody on the road.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. DH and I switched off a lot after that just so I could get in some naps. The griping came as we got closer to Orlando...he hates tolls. Still, it was the sign that we were almost there. I was hoping to get some great video of our arrival, but this was the trip where nothing choreographed would work for us. So, you have a pic just before we see the glorious Maingate...

Even my first arrival pic at Yacht Club was pretty pathetic...

I guess at least the pics I was able to get improved...

What really happened, DH and I had a misunderstanding about signs, where to go and what I'd be doing. In a nutshell, I didn't know he was expecting me to navigate. I did take a video (deleted), but it wasn't fit for all audiences.

We parked my vehicle and went to check in. I didn't want to mess with the bags if the room wasn't ready. It was about 3pm and I'd listed our estimated arrival time as 11:30am when doing online checkin. Not sure if it helped, but our room was ready. Which was good because I was a little let down that the guy who checked us in wasn't very enthusiastic or personable. So, since the room was ready we opted to check out the room before figuring out the bag situation. i.e. if it was close enough, we might bring in our own bags. Too bad our room was a million miles away...I swear, any farther and we'd be staying at the Dolphin.

The room was really nice though...a corner room on the 1st floor with a quiet pool from our patio view and a nice water area and lush greenery from our two side windows.

And before ya know it...it's time to head out...

...but not without taking one more lighting pic. I just wished we'd liked the food more. I mean, it was awful, but it's not breakfast at CP either. It also felt more chaotic than breakfast...maybe it was the long wait. DH and I also skipped all dessert because we were doing Dessert Party this night...so maybe that would have helped redeem it a bit.

As we walked by Casey's, we also saw Jim sitting down to the piano. We'd heard him play back in 2010, and it's amazing to think he's been there for all of my trips and many many years before that. We had a very brief chat...telling him I love his playing...and he addressed the princesses. Just sweet how many people react to little girls who have been to BBB. Just tons of ooooos and ahhhhs, but it's very cool when it's from someone who is there day in and day out for years upon years. Too bad we didn't get a chance to hear him play this year...really needed that nap time.

Watching flag retreat on the way out...

I know we have great convenience for the Epcot area resorts with our lodging, but seeing the monorail makes me wish we were just walking back to the Contemporary for our rest. I mean, we could have...but surely they'd tell us we don't have a room there.

Thankfully, there is a YC/BC bus right there and it's a quick trip back. And now to follow the crazy girls and their balloons back to the room.

So, we all get into comfy clothes and settle in for a bit of a nap. We don't have to be back at MK until 9pm!

Coming up...Dessert Party and the night festivities

Awesome TR! Your photography is great! I love the colors and the way you take pictures. I normally just center the main object and shoot. I'm not much of a photographer. :p

I have ALWAYS wanted a balloon like Sammie's - so I was pleased with her choice. I'm also happy to say that while one ear has deflated, it's been over 3 weeks and that balloon is still floating in my dining room! The princess balloon is about ready to hit the floor though
I have the one that lights up and you can actually untie it carefully and refill it later on. Mine is refilled with regular air and sits with my ears in my bedroom. I tied it over a pencil so it would be easy to untie and refill as it deflates. The clear plastic will probably not reinflate well but the mickey balloon itself keeps it's form. I'd wait till it dies completely though.

Go Texans!

You took a great picture! She could be in a WDW commercial.

I feel the same way about the Tiki Room. It's got to be on my Top 10 list of "got to do"s this trip.

That game was BRUTAL! OUCH.

Thanks! Funny, she's often asking me why I haven't found a way to put her on tv.

My goal was to make it to both Tiki Room and Country Bears, but the birdies took priority- so thankfully we at least got to see that. Just so hard trying to fit everything in.

Great TR. I haven't been since they brought back the original Tiki Room, and is a must do for me on this trip.

Thanks! Definitely worth a trip in now that it's no longer under new management. Thanks for reading!

Thank you! That's how DH is when I hand the camera over to him. Funny b/c it came up this weekend...I was taking a pic of the girls playing on top of a little boat in front of a pond in a forest. I set up my shot with the boat off to the side and DH is in my ear going "why aren't you centering it???" Thanks for reading!

I will have to try that. At this rate, it will probably be March by the time it loses all air. :D I really wanted one of the light up ones...maybe next trip!

All caught up and loving it your girls are just adorable and I love the do's from BBB.

Thanks! I was really pleased with how everything at BBB turned out...just totally exceeded my expectations. Thanks for reading!

That's your ghost following you home! From the Ghost Host's spiel at the unload!

Funny that you say that...I started wondering the same thing. ;)

So after a nice rest, we headed back to MK since we hade a date at Tomorrowland Terrace for dessert party. This is only our second time taking a bus from YC, but I have to say...I was very happy with the bus service. We had another short wait for the bus and we were at MK in no time.

It was about 8:45pm when we got back into MK. The place was kind of crazy because MSEP was set to start in 15 minutes. A CM was directing all thru traffic that didn't want to mess with the crowd the option of going behind MSUSA to save some time and beat the crowds. I jumped at the opportunity since I've never been back there. I didn't even bother trying to take pics since I've heard you're not really allowed + we were moving too fast for me really to snap anything decent anyways. Still, I thought it was neat to be back there even if it really didn't look like much.

We decided to ditch the stroller tonight and use this as an introduction for the girls on what it's like without a stroller. We went man to man because of this, so I had Kendall and David had Sammie. Kendall and I made it to this sign...

...we turned around, and there was no sign of DH and Sammie. I mean, I know we went faster than them, but minutes passed and they still didn't surface. I resorted to texting him, but they showed up right after that. First off...they made a wrong turn, got a little lost and had to ask for help. I don't know how this happened...I mean, he knew where we were going, but I think being behind MSUSA got him all turned around for some reason. Secondly, somewhere in all of this- he said Sammie nearly got impaled by a toy sword. I didn't see it...don't know all of the particulars, but it sounds like some dad was going kamikaze with his kid in the stroller and they were leading with toy plastic swords. I know it's a toy and it's plastic, but it could still do some serious damage if it hits someone the wrong way.

OK- well, thankfully everyone is intact and present, but now the girlies decide it's potty emergency time. I took the girls to the bathroom (which is quite small) and DH decided to get on line. The bathroom was such an ordeal and DH made it through the line so quickly that they were almost ready to put him back in line since we weren't there with him. Thankfully, all worked out and we were seated. I even got to catch a little bit of MSEP from our seat.

Due to Kendall's allergy, we had to have a special CM walk us through everything...and sadly, there were a number of things Kendall could not eat that we were not permitted to have at our table. Still, there was also plenty we could eat, so we had a fine dinner feast of desserts.

First...those mango shooters are DIVINE...seriously HEAVENLY! YUM!
Second...mega thanks to the CM who helped us with the food. They had just introduced a new item (red velevet cupcakes) and since she wasn't sure about them, she went back and got a binder with tabs on all of the items. We sat down in the middle of Dessert Party and went through the full ingredients list. Superb service and care!

We were now pretty full from desserts for dinner, so I just hung out by the rail watching the parade and taking in the Castle in all of her Dreamlight glory.

I also kind of like how this area is lit up at night.

One of my fave color combos for the Castle...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233991400/]

So, about 5 days earlier - the new projection show premiered in MK. I really liked the video that was posted, but my feelings were mixed in person. For starters, I found it super hard to photograph.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233983690/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233983192/]

And those were the good pics, most were just super bright and blurry...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232918255/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232917575/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232920237/]

Beautiful, huh.

Honestly, maybe it was the angle, but it wasn't as vibrant as I'd expected it to be and I didn't love the show as a whole. I men, I loved seeing the Castle with the Cheshire Cat projection and a few other details, but I just didn't love it like I loved the Magic the Memories and You. Still, I was shocked since I really liked the YouTube vid of it...so I expected to like it in person as well. Oh well.

Before I went back to picture taking, there was a family standing near me who was getting ready to go because they'd been told by a family memeber who was a supposed Disney expert that Wishes would not be put on that night... Something about it only being on MVMCP nights. I explained to her that hassle free Wishes viewing was the whole point of Desert Party and that the fireworks most definitely would be going off in about 5 min. They were shocked...they booked this party for the desserts and honestly didn't know there would be fireworks. Needless to say, they stuck around for Wishes.

So, I went back to taking Castle pics before the fireworks started...

Star Light ... Star Bright... First Star I see tonight... I wish I may ... I wish I might...

I WISH I COULD TAKE SOME DECENT FIREWORKS PICTURES TONIGHT!

Yeah...I wasn't starting out too hot...

Pretty, huh.

Even better, this is Tinkerbell...

Seriously! Don't laugh too hard.

It would improve some though...

Well, you get the point. I think some of my issue over here is that you're far enough off to the side that it's hard to play with your focal points. Last time we watched Wishes we were nearly centered, so it seemed less challenging. Yet for whatever reason, I keep plugging away and taking pics...

And just like that...Wishes is over...and I'm all misty. I just get sooooo choked up in the beginning and end no matter what. I guess that's a good thing though.

After the show ended, I snapped a few more pics of the castle since there were some color schemes that I'd never seen before. While blurry, this was my total favorite.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232800609/]

I also really liked this solid mint green.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233862450/]

And why not blurry deep purple while we're at it???

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233861826/]

All in all, the Dessert Party is worth it in my opinion if you hate dealing with the crowds. It is definitely not the best angle of the show, but it's still a pretty view, the desserts are tasty, and while everyone at the party crowds the rail- there seemed to be plenty of room for everyone...so no chaos.

Before we left, I also thanked the CM who helped us with the food. I just am so thankful for people like her who can help Kendall get some sweet treats yet also keep her safe.

So, we left the terrace and headed off into Tomorrowland. Up first...BUZZ!

Now I'll be the first to admit that I am awful at this ride. DH smokes me Every-Single-Time. Part of it is that I always forget that I can just hold down the trigger. Still, it's fun for all of us even if I'm no good.

The line is relatively short so we jump in with the crowd. We wind up behind a couple who finds out from hearing Kendall that she's only just learned about hidden Mickeys. They happen to know of one in the Buzz queue, so they give us some clues and we have a hunt for the hidden Mickey they were talking about. And we found it...

We in turn shared the story of the purple cat with them. They too had never heard of it, but were planning on DHS in a couple of nights and would be on the lookout for it.

Sorry, but this Buzz still creeps me out...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233853008/]

I don't know why I try and take pics of things like this when I'm moving...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232787761/]

I think this was DH's score...he was having an off night, but he still kicked my butt...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232786397/]

Not a great pic of us here, but this ... this is a pic of a person who can't break 10,000

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8232785103/]

I put my shame behind me and moved on to try out Stitch.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234108976/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233043827/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233042553/]

I know there are some who would feel this must be night of shame...willingly going in to see Stitch and all. The truth is...we've never done this and Stitch is DH's favorite character. And ya know what, we actually really enjoyed this one. I know most people would say we're crazy for that...but we liked it. So, yay for experiment 626!

We were feeling a bit tired, so we went on the most relaxing ride possible...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234104444/]

I think everyone was content to just ride the Peoplemover and relax...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234103262/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234102380/]

Even I kick my feet up a bit...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8233037101/]

Yea...it was kind of chilly that night...so I wore my furry boots. I'd regret it from a comfort standpoint though. I bought these with a crepe sole...should have spent the extra $20 and got the Vibram sole. Still...love my furry boots.

Now, I have no idea why we thought this was a good idea...but the girls were upset that we didn't actually get to ride Haunted Mansion earlier, so they asked to try again. So, we hike from the Peoplemover to Haunted Mansion because the girls are begging for the ghosties.

What's creepy...this is the photo I shot of them heading into the attraction...

You can see Kendall is pretty well in focus, but the bits of light around us are doing all kinds of crazy things...or is it just light???

So, I get the pleasure of riding with Kendall...and all is OK at first. Somewhere along the way it was this rapid downward spiral of fear. I tried talking her through it, holding her, you name it...she was terrified. By the time we passed the busts...she was sobbing. We went through the hitchhiking ghosts scene and all I could hear was "I don't want them coming with us...I don't want to die...I don't want to die." And the whole way off the ride and out the exit - she's loudly sobbing about not wanting to die. And of course people are giving us those "wow, parent of the year" kind of looks. DH told me that Sammie was scared again too, but she just closed her eyes and buried her head into his side. So...maybe we'll just skip HM until they're teens. I just don't know how much more I can take of the begging to go on followed by the sheer terror.

We decided it was time to go. Their fear was probably amplified by them being tired and we had an early day at Epcot on the horizon...so, we went towards the exit...

Tempting, especially the light up ones, but we had enough balloons for the day...

I turned around to look at the Castle...

It was at least comforting to think that we'd be back in MK in just 2 days.

We also checked out a few of the little spots up front before heading out.

(ready for bed)

We had a little bit of a wait for the bus, but nothing too bad + we got the most wonderful bus driver for the ride "home." As we were getting ready to leave, he started playing all of the automated messages on the bus. The one that cracked me up the most was I guess for Pirate's League and always obeying the code. We just were all laughing hysterically. As we passed the Contemporary, he came over the PA system and announced to the bus that there was a very special person on board. Turns out- it was Sammie. He told them she just turned 4 and was celebrating her birthday. He had the whole bus sing her happy birthday and then pointed out that she was sharing her bday celebration at a super special time...turns out, it was also Mickey and Minnie's 84th birthdays. he recognized a few other people on the bus...anniversaries and other special events and also shared with us that he was celebrating as well. Just such a special ride back to the hotel.

One other plus of the night...we did really well with no stroller. Hooray!!! Now too bad we'd have a rough time until morning...

It's around 2am and Sammie starts hacking. She coughs so hard that she makes herself sick and we have quite a mess on our hands. She didn't have any congestion earlier in the day or anything like that...it just hit her all of a sudden. As I was cleaning her up, I realized she was also covered in hives. So, my guess was that something in the room was triggering an allergic reaction. I got some Benadryl into her and all was good after that, but I felt so bad that housekeeping had to help with this mess. Sadly, we'd forget about this issue the following night and had an instant replay of the coughing to she made herself sick. I don't know what it was in that room, but she was fine as long as she wasn't in there. We've never had problems at Disney before, but Sammie is the child who is more likely to react to environmental elements. Just scary. And yes, we made sure to leave a nice tip for house/mouse-keeping.

UP NEXT- A Full Day at Epcot, and a Familiar Face

Those desserts look awesome. So awesome I wish you hadn't posted them. I was thinking of surprising the family with an ADR for the dessert party but we're doing dinner at 'Ohana and with that bread pudding, I don't want to send us into sugar shock if we then shovel in more desserts. Or on our first night at MK since I want the kids to get to sleep to be up and make it to a.m. EMH at EPCOT. Maybe...

I love your pictures of the castle and water reflections. So cool.

Poor young lady! Our son #2 is very reactive to environmental stimuli and has done the same thing. :( In Central Texas, we have cedar season coming up very, very soon.

you're tempting me to try to make an ADR for the dessert party myself :D the food looked all soo good! As far as your daughter getting scared suddenly with Haunted Mansion, I hope people really weren't that bad with the judging eyes. I was terrified of King Kong in Universal when I was 7 and cried and everything waiting in line worried I was going to be eaten. I ended up loving it. Its the innocence in children that makes WDW all that much more magical that can also lead to irrational fears (although for a 4 year old I can definitely see Haunted Mansion being a scary ride, particularly at night). I feel silly thinking now that my parents would have put me in any sort of danger, when they do anything in their power to make sure nothing bad happens to me. That's kids for you :) Hope she didn't have anymore moments like that. Can't wait to read on your day at EPCOT

I'm sorry...and it's such an awful time of year for temptation with sweets. Yeah, I really don't think I could do Dessert Party after a dinner at 'Ohana. I'm the only one in our group that likes the bread pudding (shocking) so I'd have that all to myself and then endless desserts. YIKES! It's funny...we have no problem making 8:05a ADRs for breakfast, but 8am for EMH is such a challenge.

Thanks! I took A LOT of those pics. I was just so captivated by it all.

She's reacted to harsh cleaning agents before, so I'm wondering if there's something they spray on the bedding to freshen it during your stay...i.e. so they're not changing your linens every day. I mean, she's never needed special laundry detergents, so that's the only thing I can come up with.

I have a mild allergy to cedar, but oak is my big issue...which are quite plentiful here. Still no fun for us, but especially tough on the kiddos. :(

We really enjoyed it! I think it's worth it just for having a calm Wishes experience.

People like to judge ... even when they don't know the circumstances or consider their assumptions of a situation to valid. I will tell you that the King Kong attraction is terrifying to me. I think I was college age the first time I saw it and even though I knew it wasn't real...he was so large and looked/moved so realistically that it was just a little too real for my tastes. It's the same kind of fear I started to feel around that Lego creature in DTD...it was just so large that it was unsettling.

Thankfully, HM was the only episode of this sort. DH had wanted to take them on Dinosaur, but I said no way! :D Epcot starting in just a few...

So, it's now November 19th and we have an 8:05a ADR at Akershus in Epcot. We've done Akershus for lunch and dinner before, but never breakfast...so, this was kind of a first for us. To be perfectly honest, I had been on the fence for weeks trying to decide if I even wanted to do this meal. I stalked the site for it after I'd dropped a 1900PF dinner because I picked up BoG...i.e. the realization that we're going to Disney and didn't have a single princess meal. Then I snagged a CRT breakfast for Nov 20th because I loved the idea of a day of 2 castles + the revamped CRT breakfast menu looked excellent. So, needless to say...I wasn't sure if I should keep the meal in Norway. In the end, I kept it because Belle is Kendall's #1 and without being sure we'd get into Enchanted Tales with Belle on the 20th...I needed at least 1 guaranteed Belle meeting for her. At least Epcot is super convenient and we got to sleep in a little bit later and still make this early ADR.

So, we headed out of YC and passed some pretty poinsettias along the way.

While kind of blurry because I'm walking and snapping shots...you can see that there's pretty much nobody out there with us at the time...

So, really nobody out in the Epcot area at this hour...which kind of shocked me. I guess I figured with several places in the resorts serving early breakfasts, including Cape May, I just thought we'd see a few more people out and about.

We got to Epcot a few minutes too early, so we had to wait to be let in. So, I just snapped a few pics as we waited.

Shortly after this we were let in. There was actually one family let in right ahead of us, but they were there for a photo shoot. You'll see them in a few of my "empty park pictures."

See...there they are...the only other people we've seen in the park with us so far...
