In Search of the Purple Cat & Other Wild Goose Chases

Introductions...and Day 1: Getting settled, getting snacks and heading Dowtown

Well, it's been about a week since we got back...I'm almost done editing and uploading pics...and I've channeled my inner Jennings Osborne and covered my house with lights as best as I can...so, I guess it's time to get this trip report rolling. I don't have many pics for this early section, but I promise you----I have a TON of pics...so please be patient.

If you had a chance to read my PTR, this trip was a surprise for my younger daughter's (Sammie) 4th bday. We also have a 6 yr old daughter named Kendall who got her own surprise WDW trip back for her 5th bday. Sadly- the surprise for Sammie kind of fizzled, but by our departure day (Nov 14th) they were bouncing off the ceiling with excitement.

First things first...I had to get our Daisy Doggy to doggy camp.

Yeah, the girls thought it would be fun to put an 'Ohana lei on her...that didn't last long.

There was MAJOR drama with boarding though...like, "am I going to miss my vacay for this?" kind of drama. Essentially, the girl who took my reservation booked me for October instead of November, and they were booked solid b/c my dates included Thanksgiving. It all worked out in the end, but it was a very ugly 45 minutes. Still, with the dog boarded, we were pretty much ready to go.

We hit the road from the Houston area around 8:15pm. The girls were so excited that they actually stayed awake much longer than expected, but they were both out before we crossed into Louisiana. They woke up each time we stopped for gas, but that was fine b/c it served as bathroom breaks for them and the people with the graveyard shifts at the various gas station convenience stores got a kick out of the girls' road trip bed time attire. They were both in Christmas pjs...Kendall an elf and Sammie as Santa. Kendall also had big furry bunny slippers and Sammie had her ladybugs.

I drove from Houston to the Alabama state line. I couldn't even tell you what time it was when DH took over for me. I went a bit crazy between eastern Louisiana and through Mississippi. I was drinking Diet Mountain Dew and had a couple 20oz diet Red Bulls + peanut butter M&Ms. Let's just say I was WIRED! Around midnight, several stations switched over to holiday music...so just picture me all energized, having a holiday sing a long in the driver's seat, dancing in my seat...and all while everyone else slept! Yeah- it's a good thing there was next to nobody on the road.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. DH and I switched off a lot after that just so I could get in some naps. The griping came as we got closer to Orlando...he hates tolls. Still, it was the sign that we were almost there. I was hoping to get some great video of our arrival, but this was the trip where nothing choreographed would work for us. So, you have a pic just before we see the glorious Maingate...

Even my first arrival pic at Yacht Club was pretty pathetic...

I guess at least the pics I was able to get improved...

What really happened, DH and I had a misunderstanding about signs, where to go and what I'd be doing. In a nutshell, I didn't know he was expecting me to navigate. I did take a video (deleted), but it wasn't fit for all audiences.

We parked my vehicle and went to check in. I didn't want to mess with the bags if the room wasn't ready. It was about 3pm and I'd listed our estimated arrival time as 11:30am when doing online checkin. Not sure if it helped, but our room was ready. Which was good because I was a little let down that the guy who checked us in wasn't very enthusiastic or personable. So, since the room was ready we opted to check out the room before figuring out the bag situation. i.e. if it was close enough, we might bring in our own bags. Too bad our room was a million miles away...I swear, any farther and we'd be staying at the Dolphin.

The room was really nice though...a corner room on the 1st floor with a quiet pool from our patio view and a nice water area and lush greenery from our two side windows.

Picking back up...we made our way into the library and got set up for the show. One of the CMs in the library overheard some of the battles the girls were having over the single set of cutlery and came to our rescue. They have extra props stored in a cabinet in the library. So, they were quick to supply Kendall with her own prop and restore the peace. DH had my camera and he's not used to using it, so some of the pics were like this...

...while others were considerably better.

Still, the Photopass pics were MUCH better...at least that's what I kept telling myself...so I opted to by the photos. Something I almost never do.

I mean, it's still dark, but it's a much better angle on everyone...

When it came time for me to sing my part for Belle...it felt kind of awkward. I mean, here you are face to face with Belle and you pretty much go triple forte with the Wardrobe's signature sing-songy sound. It was just odd to me at the time.

So, I got my camera back from DH and in his defense...my Lumiere pic was no better...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236096354/]

...but I got a shot of the light fixture before heading out.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235031237/]

While I think Storytime with Belle was fun and the girls enjoyed it, I don't know if it's a must do every trip kind of attraction. It's kind of like a show, except that you're part of it, and once you do it- you're good for a while.

We headed out and went farther into the FLE.

I don't normally report on bathrooms, but I'd heard the new one in FLE was nice...maybe not nice like the new "Potty-time with Rapunzel" (LOL) is going to be, but still nice.

So, obviously I started with a light...

I kind of like the flooring...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236083538/]

And another light...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236082014/]

And who could forget the Dyson hand dryer?

We'd actually see another one of these at a rest area in the West Palm Beach area!

Well, now that we're all good...we head on to take a voyage with the Little Mermaid.

My only complaint here is that we got rushed through the queue once we got into the covered area. If you haven't seen it in the various previews and articles...there are these little area with projection screens and in those screen these tiny little ADORABLE crabs appear. The crabs are scavengers and will show up with all kinds of little treasures. You essentially have to tell them if they bring out something that doesn't belong...and they'll take it away. I tell ya...those crabs are the cutest thing...and naturally, the girls wanted one to take home, but they didn't have any. Merch was still being limited at that time and we were told that not all merch was yet available. I don't know if they planned to make those crabs, but I think a lot of people will be buying them if they do.

The wait time said something like 25 min, but I think we waited all of maybe 5 min and really most of it was just from walking through the queue. We were at this point in practically no time...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234989607/]

I really don't know what my problem was, but it's like I suddenly forgot that I could adjust my camera to try and capture some of the ride flash-free. So, most of the pics I took look a lot like this...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236049754/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234983511/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236044666/]

I'm going to blame it on the fact that it was something that was pretty much brand new for WDW/MK and that I was just kind of giddy to finally be doing some of the thigns inside FLE.

We were pretty much done doing everything we'd set out to do in the expansion that morning, so we headed out. What's crazy...it was still pretty early and there was already a significant line forming at BoG for the lunch hours. DH and I both decided that lunch there was out of the question and everyone would just have to be happy with dinner that night. I snapped a pic of the Mine Train construction on the way out...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234976169/]

...and then it was time to cut through Fantasyland on the way to our next destination...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236043026/]

I was also kind of sad that we'd miss the addition of the tower at the Rapunzel bathroom construction...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234974753/]

This day was actually shaping up to be a warmer day, so this is what the girls wanted to do...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236037440/]

And this was also on their wish list...

BTMRR had a significant wait and Splash wasn't looking too bad, so we grabbed some FPs for the crazy choo choo as one of the girls called it, and headed here...

It crossed my mind around this time that I'm still holding my camera and I didn't have my bag or anything to really protect it. DH had a bag with him, for some reason...so protecting my camera was all on him.

While we had been on Splash just two days earlier...this ride was a bit different. For starters...the ride kept breaking down. I know it breaks down all of the time, but this is the first time it's happened to us while we were on it. And it kept happening over and over. The worst was our long stop just before the lift for the big drop. It just totally destroys the tone of the ride when you keep stopping. Secondly, the Lauging Place is always under scrutiny...on our first ride two days earlier, some of the turtles were actually working, but not today. Third, we were riding behind a family of 3 who were on their very first trip to WDW and they'd done very little research. They seemed like nice people and all, but I don't think they knew what to expect with Splash. Which leads me to...

...this is the first time we've ever gotten wet on Splash. While part of me attributed it to it being a warmer day...we rode it back in August of 2011 and came off that time bone dry. Yea...so, now we're all trying to dry off, but the camera at least came out OK.

So, now that we're soggy...we head off to our next adventure in hopes that we can air out a bit...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234935261/]

I guess the one perk of all of those breakdowns on Splash...we're now inside of our Fastpass window to ride BTMRR.

The girls also got a little freaked out because they thought this group of girls and women initially in front of us were cutting. It appears they were using some kind of VIP service...i.e. spending thousands per day so you are guided through the parks and don't have to wait. What's funny, with our FPs...we were only 1 train behind these people...and my wallet is also MUCH happier!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235998518/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235995690/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234926549/]

Don't know why, but it just cracked me up seeing DH have Sammie raise her arms and see what's left of the blue nail polish.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235989704/]

After our train ride, we decided to do something we haven't done in a while...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234921155/]

The wait time was only listed as 15 min and our lines apps also were showing smaller waits, so we decided to get on the standby line. We still had one set of those FPs left that could be used for any attraction, any day, any time, but DH said he didn't want to use them here when the wait seemed to be this short. Sadly...the wait turned out to be anything but short. I took pics of just about anything and everything I could to pass the time...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234918317/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235981898/]

The spider scared the living daylights out of Kendall...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235979834/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235978214/]

So close, yet still more waiting...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235976422/]

We thought this would be our boat, but they were leaving a lot of empty seats...so we'd have to wait until the next one...

Taking a break with baking round 1 (mint chocolate chip pound cake + a batch of fondant) to post an update...

We hopped on the Monorail and started to make our way around the loop.

The goal was to hit places we had yet to visit this trip, so we skipped the Contemporary since we'd just been there for dinner a few nights ago. So, our first stop was the Poly...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234862221/]

Aloha!

I always hear such good things about Captain Cook's and I've never tried it, so we stopped here for some QS lunch.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235924546/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234853087/]

They're all festive as well...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235915860/]

I was really hoping they'd have some of the cupcakes I've seen show up on the Food Blog. In fact, there was one involving passion fruit I was really banking on being there, but alas...no fun cupcakes. One had nuts, one was pilgrim themed and they used a peanut butter cup for the hat, and then they had a more basic one where they tried to make a cornucopia on top. I went with that, but we chose not to let Kendall eat it since it was right next to cupcakes with allergens. That's OK...she'll get an even better dessert in a little bit.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234857893/]

Sadly, the cupcake was horribly average.

The girls shared a kids sandwich, and DH and I shared the pulled pork...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235911404/]

I LOVED it, but he was not a fan.

Beyond the cuppycakes...I had one other treat in mind and I knew it was one I could share with Kendall.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234844881/]

That's right, we went for a vanilla pineapple Dole Whip swirl! It was perfect too because Sammie loved the cupcake (as did DH), whereas Kendall and I were all about the Dole Whip. Sheer pineapple happiness!

Every time we go into the Poly we have this debate about staying there. We remain torn. We are not fans of the interior common areas, but love the pics we've seen of the rooms. We realized we'd sat there debating a little too long, so we got up to go.

It wasn't long before we were up on the platform waiting for the next monorail.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234842021/]

Next stop...the GF!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235902230/]

My favorite tree and lobby. It's funny, this one always enters that same 'should we stay here' discussion. We LOVE the lobby, but the pics I've seen of the rooms really are not our thing.

Loved all of the gold trees in the windows...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234835187/]

Obviously, the color fits with the decor, but I was a tad jealous since YC's shop trees were all blue. Don't get me wrong, I've entertained the idea of a large blue artificial tree to help with my ornament obsession, but after looking at the shops in both hotels...gold was the hands down winner.

Now, if you've ever been in the GF at the holidays...it's kind of hard not to be in awe of their tree and take a million and one different pics...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235897814/]

I won't make you look at all of them...not like it really changes.

This is the other big attraction...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235888588/]

As cool as the carousel was, the GF's house is still #1.

So, I pretty much just went around taking pics of all of the details...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235883514/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234815983/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234799211/]

Of course this one had to stop to watch cartoons...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235877996/]

And now for a pic of the tree from a different angle.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8234810843/]

Just so pretty in here...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235868336/]

The GF's gingerbread house was there when we visited in 2010, but it was prior to the shop opening for the day...so we didn't get to see the chimney being "functional."

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235866098/]

I also love all of the little trees upstairs...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235861756/]

Really, they are just average sized trees dwarfed by the monstrosity on the lobby floor.

Somewhere in all of this, Sammie found her sword stashed away in the stroller and is using it to insist we head upstairs.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236209619/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236206415/]

Which is cool because now I get to take pics of the gingerbread house from above...

Once on board our monorail, Captain Sammie thinks she's in charge...

And Kendall could care less...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236168291/]

I don't know what it is, but I always like taking pics as we go around this portion of the loop.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237227070/]

We had discussed taking the boat over to Wilderness Lodge...maybe having one more snack, but it was now after 2:30p and it was imperative that we got some rest time today. We had a 7:45p at BoG and I wanted everyone to have a little nap time before we hit MK for the evening.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236159205/]

So we waved good-bye to the MK area for now...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236156235/]

We were still having great bus luck...there was a bus right there ready to take us back to YC...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237219296/]

We passed a familiar spot along the way...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237217790/]

...and were soon "home" and ready for a long nap!

I may have to cut my posts a bit short tonight as I have a cake to decorate...'tis the season for green hands!

We got back to MK a bit before 7pm and there was still a decent crowd of people coming in and out...

It was also really nice... a few of the CMs helping us with our cards to get in wanted to know our evening plans so they could make some recommendations. They were very happy to hear that we'd be skipping the 9pm MSEP and would catch some of the 11pm if possible. Nice when they want to offer that extra little bit of service though...always appreciated.

So, we headed up MSUSA with no real plans as of yet. It was also funny...we ran into these two women who were trying to get a pic of the castle with the dreamlights. They were in good spirits about it, but frustrated. I tried to make her feel a bit better and let her know that it's really not the easiest thing to photograph...she decided she might have to "borrow" a pic when she gets home to show her family since she just wasn't happy with anything on her phone's camera.

Now, we didn't want to end up on any rides with long lines that might make us miss our check in time, and we were also hoping to hit some things we had yet to do...so what do they all decide on... TEA CUPS. Yeah- about the last thing I want to ride before dinner. We'd actually considered this on our previous MK day, but it broke down right when we walked by (it really was the day of breakdowns)...so now here we are.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237213994/]

I snapped both of these pics of Kendall checking it out before we got in line. Not sure which I like better...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236142737/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237211592/]

So, we got on what was a relatively short line and waited our turn.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237207956/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237206480/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236138413/]

These would be the last pics I'd take before we start to spin...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237203652/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237202266/]

DH gave the girls a goal...and it was to make mommy sick! So, I just closed my eyes and did my best to ignore it all. For once, this actually worked! Last time I rode the cups I felt sick for a good hour...tonight...nothing!

Next up...a fave of all...

There was a minor wait, so I snapped pics while we waited.

While we waited, the girls pointed out where we had breakfast earlier...and wanted me to find our window.

Interestingly enough, the family in front of us was unaware that there was a restaurant in there. They had two little girls with princess shirts on, so I made sure we didn't dwell on it being a princess meal. I mean, even if CRT is easier to get into these days...the odds of a walk up are still pretty slim, so I didn't want to have these girls suddenly begging mom and dad to try and eat there.

It was finally time to get on and we decided to take some pics with the girls...

And then we're moving and it's time to ride!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237181328/]

And once again, this crazy one would ask for a horse of her own! Uhhhh- no.

This one knows better!

I took a couple of pics of the back side of the castle after our ride...

Just looks a little odd with the little bits of dreamlights on the backside, but kind of cool as well. Yes, I'm conflicted!

So, we head back into the FLE. I hadn't been into Gaston's earlier, so we decide to head there since we still have some more time to burn.

What's funny, Gaston himself was just finishing up a break and heading back to his M&G (and he REALLY looks like Gaston IMO)...he stopped to wish Sammie happy birthday. I think the girls were confused since for that one moment he sounded truly sincere and not "Gaston-ish."

So, we headed in and checked out the land of the antlers and such.

Every family needs a virtual fireplace...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237156522/]

...as well as a big hairy chair...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236085971/]

...and the house surely would be incomplete without one of these.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8236084109/]

So, we decide to try and check into BoG...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237143710/]

...but we're a little early and are told they won't check anyone earlier than 15 min from their ADR time. It was interesting though since most everyone on line had their tales of how many calls/hours it took for them to get their ADR. We'd also heard there was a fight the previous night because a passholder was refused a walk up. They were telling everyone they were booked solid until April or May.

So, we waited and sat up against the barriers for the Mine Train construction. The time really dragged, but at least a few CMs with pins came by to help break it up. And finally, the time came to get one of these...

They wouldn't even let you on the bridge without one.

Sadly, they were running "at least" 15-20 min behind...and we'd checked in 15 min early, so we knew we'd have a bit of a wait. So, of course I take pics...even if some are dark and somewhat blurry.

The girls were really freaked out by these...swore they were moving and blinking. Hey, maybe they were.

So, I just continued snapping away...

The wait really seemed like a LONG time, but the various people out on the bridge with us were all in good spirits and the CM "guarding" the main gate in was having a blast with Sammie and her light up shoes. She kept going on about her enchanted shoes that must be full of fairies...and a number of other CMs joined in on the act. It really helped pass the time.

We then headed into the West Wing...the ultra dark West Wing...

After touring the West Wing, I was soooooooo thankful we weren't seated in there. It didn't seem like anyone seated in there could have any peace during their meal because everyone and their mother not seated in there wanted to tour the room. You don't have that happen in the ballroom. I've heard several complaints about this as well...so, glad to visit the West Wing ... and that is all.

We decided to head up front...which brought us back through the ballroom...

...Since we just had to see the suits of armor!

It is pretty funny to hear them...I had Kendall with me and her favorite was when they'd start snoring.

So, it was time to head back to the table so Sammie and DH could have their turn touring, and hopefully get some food.

Passed this guy along the way...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235959497/]

DH and Sammie went off, but at least I had something waiting for us to help pass the time...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8235951673/]

...yes, that's our first beer and wine ever in MK! (sorry, took the pic after we got starters, but the drinks were most definitely there first!)

OK, off to work on cake...coming up...the Food and the Rest of the Evening!
