In Search of the Purple Cat & Other Wild Goose Chases

Introductions...and Day 1: Getting settled, getting snacks and heading Dowtown

Well, it's been about a week since we got back...I'm almost done editing and uploading pics...and I've channeled my inner Jennings Osborne and covered my house with lights as best as I can...so, I guess it's time to get this trip report rolling. I don't have many pics for this early section, but I promise you----I have a TON of pics...so please be patient.

If you had a chance to read my PTR, this trip was a surprise for my younger daughter's (Sammie) 4th bday. We also have a 6 yr old daughter named Kendall who got her own surprise WDW trip back for her 5th bday. Sadly- the surprise for Sammie kind of fizzled, but by our departure day (Nov 14th) they were bouncing off the ceiling with excitement.

First things first...I had to get our Daisy Doggy to doggy camp.

Yeah, the girls thought it would be fun to put an 'Ohana lei on her...that didn't last long.

There was MAJOR drama with boarding though...like, "am I going to miss my vacay for this?" kind of drama. Essentially, the girl who took my reservation booked me for October instead of November, and they were booked solid b/c my dates included Thanksgiving. It all worked out in the end, but it was a very ugly 45 minutes. Still, with the dog boarded, we were pretty much ready to go.

We hit the road from the Houston area around 8:15pm. The girls were so excited that they actually stayed awake much longer than expected, but they were both out before we crossed into Louisiana. They woke up each time we stopped for gas, but that was fine b/c it served as bathroom breaks for them and the people with the graveyard shifts at the various gas station convenience stores got a kick out of the girls' road trip bed time attire. They were both in Christmas pjs...Kendall an elf and Sammie as Santa. Kendall also had big furry bunny slippers and Sammie had her ladybugs.

I drove from Houston to the Alabama state line. I couldn't even tell you what time it was when DH took over for me. I went a bit crazy between eastern Louisiana and through Mississippi. I was drinking Diet Mountain Dew and had a couple 20oz diet Red Bulls + peanut butter M&Ms. Let's just say I was WIRED! Around midnight, several stations switched over to holiday music...so just picture me all energized, having a holiday sing a long in the driver's seat, dancing in my seat...and all while everyone else slept! Yeah- it's a good thing there was next to nobody on the road.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. DH and I switched off a lot after that just so I could get in some naps. The griping came as we got closer to Orlando...he hates tolls. Still, it was the sign that we were almost there. I was hoping to get some great video of our arrival, but this was the trip where nothing choreographed would work for us. So, you have a pic just before we see the glorious Maingate...

Even my first arrival pic at Yacht Club was pretty pathetic...

I guess at least the pics I was able to get improved...

What really happened, DH and I had a misunderstanding about signs, where to go and what I'd be doing. In a nutshell, I didn't know he was expecting me to navigate. I did take a video (deleted), but it wasn't fit for all audiences.

We parked my vehicle and went to check in. I didn't want to mess with the bags if the room wasn't ready. It was about 3pm and I'd listed our estimated arrival time as 11:30am when doing online checkin. Not sure if it helped, but our room was ready. Which was good because I was a little let down that the guy who checked us in wasn't very enthusiastic or personable. So, since the room was ready we opted to check out the room before figuring out the bag situation. i.e. if it was close enough, we might bring in our own bags. Too bad our room was a million miles away...I swear, any farther and we'd be staying at the Dolphin.

The room was really nice though...a corner room on the 1st floor with a quiet pool from our patio view and a nice water area and lush greenery from our two side windows.

We head on in to AK and check out the babirusa along the way.

I know I really need to get over it, but it bugs me when you hear people pointing out the "warthog." I mean, he has a sign in front of him saying what he is. I see the similarities...it just bugs me. OK...off my soap box.

First pic of the tree upon entering the park...

Now, maybe I was turned around and confused, but for the life of me...i could not figure out what this was...

And another tree pic as we get a little farther in...

We're trying to figure out what to do as we walked. While I love all the little details and the natural beauty of the park, it's our least favorite park. It's just tough when the girls are too short for Everest and Primeval Whirl, too young to not be terrified in Dinosaur, and it's too chilly to even think of riding Kali River Rapids. I know there are lots of great shows at AK, but I'd spend much of this day hearing DH go on about how he hates wasting time waiting for shows, even if it's a good show...and that spending the day mainly doing shows is no good for two active kids. So, like I said...I was with Grumpy! I mean, even if it's not my fave, there are still lots of great things to do and places to explore.

So, regardless of his issue with shows, I made FotLK my must do show this trip. I guess it was around 10am at this point and I think the first show was around 10:30, so we headed that way first.

There was already a decent sized crowd beginning to form, so we just got in line behind everyone. It was at this time that Sammie started crying. She was hungry. I had some fruit and cereal bars on me, but she wanted nothing to do with those. And DH started getting all upset with me that I didn't just get her something before we left YC...ummmm, once again...YC is pretty bad for QS. So, we leave the line- bickering- and start trying to figure out where to eat. We get just past the CM booth in front of the FotLK entrance when the CM manning the booth calls out to us to find out why we're leaving and choosing to miss the show.

We explain to her that Sammie was hungry and there's no way she'll make it through the wait and then the actual show. We told her that we'd probably try and make it back later. She was just sooooo sweet, just doting on Sammie the whole time. Well, she asked when we thought we might come back...and we said one of the next two shows. She started leafing through a clipboard of papers...then she suggested the 12:30p show so we had plenty of time to find food since it's not the greatest part of the park for breakfast. She pointed out the exit for FotLK and asked if we could make it back there by noon...which we of course said yes. Then she told us we'd be her VIPs for that show and to just go off and have fun and make sure Sammie got some food in her tummy. We'd just have to give the CM at the exit Sammie's name when we came back. So wow- finally getting to see FotLK and we're VIPs too! Very cool!

It was also potty emergency time, so we headed through Camp Minnie Mickey ... and we all got a kick out of following King Louie in...

Took a few pics of character trees as we waited on DH...

We headed back out in search of food and bickering all the way about not properly anticipating this. OY! So, thankfully Pizzafari was open and serving breakfast. Now I was just expecting breakfast, but they also gave Sammie cupcakes for both her and Kendall! I also appreciated that they asked first.

I've never been in here before, but i did like all of the bright colors.

While I've heard mixed reviews on the pizza, the breakfast food was decent.

More lights!

Happy with her chocolate milk...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237707045/]

Ooooooo- and there's a snake on that light above me!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237704677/]

All in all, it was a nice breakfast and I think the food put everyone in a slightly better mood. Several of the CMs with the morning shift in there were on the elderly side, but it was great for the girls. They all wanted to pin trade and it was just so sweet to see the difference in interaction styles from previous CMs with pin trading. There was one woman who even went up to the girls and asked them if they'd like to trade. This was the first time anyone asked the girls to trade and it really made the meal for them.

We had about an hour to burn, so while we wanted to do something, we also knew we couldn't go too far. So, we decided to head back to...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238770320/]

Now, even though we just had breakfast...we still had TONS of snack and QS credits left, so DH decided that a Mickey Premium bar was in order...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238767542/]

The girls also did some pin trading with the CMs there, while I took pics around that area...

The girls decided that they wanted to try and work in as many M&Gs as possible before the start of the show. While they tried to decide where to start first, I took some more character tree pics...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238748358/]

The girls decided on Baloo and King Louie first...which is funny because they went through a Jungle Book phase some time ago and haven't asked for it in over a year. Oh well. As we waited on line, the CM working the line was telling everyone that "only the bear signs, the monkey doesn't know his ABCs." Well, the girls thought this was hysterical...but it also gave Sammie an idea...she was going to teach him his ABCs!

So, she marched right up to him and told him that she was going to help him learn...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237672327/]

And Kendall and Baloo are like "Hey, why not?"

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237669491/]

So, there Sammie goes singing the ABCs to King Louie in hopes of teaching him.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238732286/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237661235/]

And Baloo decides to help conduct!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238724352/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8243464372/]

And in the end there are hugs for all...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238713182/]

I said...hugs for ALL!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8243461294/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238699436/]

Yea- for whatever reason, they were all about King Louie and we had to remind them to hug Baloo...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238684050/]

I guess that's what happens when you teach a Monkey his ABCs.

Up Next...more M&Gs, pin trading ethics, etc.

There's no bad time for a Mickey bar.

As a side note, a sincere thanks! Ebay facilitated my purchases of two Disney lanyards, grab bags of pins, and two Mickey Jedi pins.

There really isn't! It was, as usual, super yum!

Yay for getting pin stuff on ebay!!! I purchased a large lot bag earlier this month and split it between the girls and it was a huge hit. I'm sure they'll love the Jedi pins! :)

I missed those character trees.:( They look very cute! We just never made it back that way this trip. And I hear you about the strollers!!! This was the last trip I plan to be using a stroller and I am super excited about that!

I had seen them on someone's blog prior to our trip and we just happened to be in that area. I'm pretty sure I'll have more pics of them coming up...there were quite a few! The stroller is so helpful for so many things, but you just hit that point where you're ready. So, yay for both of us on being stroller free for future trips! :D

I doubt anyone will know which character we're greeting next based on this...

...so I'll just tell ya...it's Donald!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238671926/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237601501/]

The line wasn't too bad for Donald, but as we got to the front of the line, a CM managing things asked if we'd be OK with another family going ahead of us. I looked off to the side and saw a family that had made their way up a path on the rear section of the M&G area. At first DH didn't get it, and then he noticed what I initially saw...and that the child was traveling with a mask and what appeared to be oxygen. I can only assume it was a Make A Wish trip. It just makes you pause for a moment and be thankful that not only can Disney grant such wishes and obviously grateful that your children are healthy.

So, more silly Donald pics...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238652494/]

I have no idea what Donald was saying....but clearly it was funny!

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238650132/]

And here's Sammie running off not realizing that her M&G with Donald is not yet over...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237578695/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8242386279/]

He called her back for more snuggles...

Next up for greetings and meetings...

Well, if you didn't get it...you can kind of see in this one where we're headed. (I was just taking a pic of the birdhouse).

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238629916/]

And some lights while we wait...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238628072/]

This line moved a little more slowly, but we finally made it up to the front...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237556555/]

...and next thing ya know, we're meeting some 'munks.'

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238622978/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237551319/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238614742/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238607032/]

They weren't being overly silly this time, but the girls still seemed happy with the whole M&G experience.

We still have some time to burn, so we take in some of the entertainment in the area...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237536009/]

We were getting closer to show time, so we thought it would be wise to get the girls in the bathroom. In doing so, we also had a lesson in hidden Mickeys. I tried to explain to Kendall and Sammie that while it may be a little more obvious in carpeting and bedspreads, they also can hide them in tiles...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238602944/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238600744/]

It took them a little while to get it...but you could see the lightbulb go off once they did.

The lines for Mickey and Minnie were really long...like I don't think we'll make it to FotLK in time - long. Pocahantas was also over there and her line was so long that they put a cut off on it. So, I just took more pics of the character trees...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238595496/]

The girls also decided to pass the time doing some pin trading....

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237523717/]

This would also prove to be an interesting trading experience. Earlier in the trip, Kendall traded away her 2012 spinner pin (pictured below)...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/7884322008/]

We asked her not to, but she insisted on trading it. Well, fastforward to this current trade...Sammie tried to trade hers and she was told no.The CM explained to them that there are pins that you trade and pins that you keep. He wanted them to know that the spinner pin was a pin you keep...that it was a special pin. He still gave Sammie a pin...I told him he didn't need to, but he wanted to...he just didn't want her to give up a truly good pin. He then looked at Kendall's lanyard and gave a similar lesson...showing her which pins of hers she shouldn't give up and suggested we buy her a book about pins so she could start to learn more about pin histories, traders and keepers. On a related note, the girls got a bunch of trader pins for Hanukkah and on Christmas, Sammie is going to get a Zero pin (she never found one) to go with her Jack, and Kendall is going to get a brand new 2012 spinner. She has a trinket box ornament and I'm thinking of Santa leaving it in there with a note that he wanted to make sure she got her pin back.

We still had time to burn, so we figured we'd burn another snack credit. I checked out the decorations while we waited...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238589798/]

The wait wasn't long, and we wound up with this yummy goodness...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238587920/]

And yet it was still too early to head here...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237517599/]

So, I photographed a flower...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238581498/]

...and a trashcan...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238577512/]

...and it was nearly noon, so we all decided to show up at the Exit...aka- the VIP entrance.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238575456/]

We were still a little bit early, but we were allowed to wait. It wasn't the same CM at the exit, but the one who did mark us down for VIP popped by once and gave us a really warm greeting and was super excited for us to see the show. The CM manning the exit was a little more quiet, but we had some interesting discussions while we waited. Much of it was about the cost of things at WDW...which seemed like an odd discussion with a CM. Another family joined us at the exit during this discussion...I guess they were the other VIPs. Still- we got into this whole thing over the cost of meals, BBB, and other fun things...the CM expressed feelings that it was all too expensive. While I agree that it can be pricey, we don't do this every day either and enhances the vacay. On the flip side, the other family, who happened to be AP holders (also from TX), gave the whole "it doesn't have to be so expensive." They sang the praises of staying offsite in modest lodging, bringing your own food, etc. That's fine too, but that's not for everyone. I think I'd rather go once a year or once every other year and go big time vs. going 4 or 5 times a year and being on a tight budget for each trip. Different strokes...

We moved off to the side while the crowd for the previous show exited and then we had a CM escort us to our special seats. We were in that first little row and we were in the lion section.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238568418/]

I don't know why I liked taking pics of the floor, but I did. It also wasn't long before the crowds started rushing in...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237501995/]

And then once everyone was in ... it was time for the show to begin...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237492569/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238556438/]

Sammie was terrified that she might get pulled out to help with the show. Most of the other kids helping in that initial part with the animal noises were from that front row...but I think they could see that she was pretty scared, because they just smiled at her and then found a more willing little boy in the crowd...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238554866/]

What's funny...now Sammie was bugged by this, but both girls would get a chance to participate a little later on in the show.

So, I just pretty much went nuts with the camera...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237484291/]

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238550552/]

...and this really freaked the girls out since the fog was up to their knees...

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8238540938/]

...but the fear quickly went away as the various parts of the show unfolded.

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8237468587/]

Up Next...a lot more FotLK!!!

And more FotLK...

It's funny, Sammie got scared here because she was afraid the fire might fly off the stage and burn her. I guess I can see where she was coming from. The location of our seats made us prime targets for casual cast interaction. A good number of those in the show would come by and pat the girls on the head or give them a quick snuggle...even the ones on stilts!

I also love that the girls understood the roles of each person. It was just nice to hear Sammie quietly proclaim- "look mommy, she's a birdie!"

It's also a little awkward...cool, but awkward...to have some of the people in the show practically on top of you.

But, I'm not complaining...

...becuase the magic is about to get even better!!!

Yes, that's Kendall being asked to join the show! And Sammie would be called over as well...

I managed to get a few pics of them being part of the fun...

Unfortunately, even the best of the action shots are a bit (or a lot) blurry...

Now DH, being the smart guy that he is, took video. Our phones shoot in HD, but I can't get his phone to upload to my YouTube account to be viewed in HD. So, the best I could do was to get it up to my Flickr account. So, hopefully, this link will let you watch the video of it all.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/houcusechickie/8220133034/

So, on with the show and all of the close ups...

All in all, it was just an incredible experience. I mean, it would have been a cool show no matter what, but in the end, both girls just felt so special being in those VIP seats and getting all of the interaction with the entertainers. I wanted to thank the CM who put us on the VIP list, but she wasn't there when we were ready to leave. So, I'll thank her on here for what I consider to be our best CM interaction of the trip. It was AWESOME!!!

Up Next...more of our AK day!

UGH.....not sure what is up with all of the pictures. :confused: They all posted initially just fine and there have been no edits. It will probably be after Christmas when I can go back through and try and correct this.

For all those that celebrate...have a Merry Christmas!!! :)
