In Search of the Purple Cat & Other Wild Goose Chases

Introductions...and Day 1: Getting settled, getting snacks and heading Dowtown

Well, it's been about a week since we got back...I'm almost done editing and uploading pics...and I've channeled my inner Jennings Osborne and covered my house with lights as best as I can...so, I guess it's time to get this trip report rolling. I don't have many pics for this early section, but I promise you----I have a TON of pics...so please be patient.

If you had a chance to read my PTR, this trip was a surprise for my younger daughter's (Sammie) 4th bday. We also have a 6 yr old daughter named Kendall who got her own surprise WDW trip back for her 5th bday. Sadly- the surprise for Sammie kind of fizzled, but by our departure day (Nov 14th) they were bouncing off the ceiling with excitement.

First things first...I had to get our Daisy Doggy to doggy camp.

Yeah, the girls thought it would be fun to put an 'Ohana lei on her...that didn't last long.

There was MAJOR drama with boarding though...like, "am I going to miss my vacay for this?" kind of drama. Essentially, the girl who took my reservation booked me for October instead of November, and they were booked solid b/c my dates included Thanksgiving. It all worked out in the end, but it was a very ugly 45 minutes. Still, with the dog boarded, we were pretty much ready to go.

We hit the road from the Houston area around 8:15pm. The girls were so excited that they actually stayed awake much longer than expected, but they were both out before we crossed into Louisiana. They woke up each time we stopped for gas, but that was fine b/c it served as bathroom breaks for them and the people with the graveyard shifts at the various gas station convenience stores got a kick out of the girls' road trip bed time attire. They were both in Christmas pjs...Kendall an elf and Sammie as Santa. Kendall also had big furry bunny slippers and Sammie had her ladybugs.

I drove from Houston to the Alabama state line. I couldn't even tell you what time it was when DH took over for me. I went a bit crazy between eastern Louisiana and through Mississippi. I was drinking Diet Mountain Dew and had a couple 20oz diet Red Bulls + peanut butter M&Ms. Let's just say I was WIRED! Around midnight, several stations switched over to holiday music...so just picture me all energized, having a holiday sing a long in the driver's seat, dancing in my seat...and all while everyone else slept! Yeah- it's a good thing there was next to nobody on the road.

The rest of the drive was pretty uneventful. DH and I switched off a lot after that just so I could get in some naps. The griping came as we got closer to Orlando...he hates tolls. Still, it was the sign that we were almost there. I was hoping to get some great video of our arrival, but this was the trip where nothing choreographed would work for us. So, you have a pic just before we see the glorious Maingate...

Even my first arrival pic at Yacht Club was pretty pathetic...

I guess at least the pics I was able to get improved...

What really happened, DH and I had a misunderstanding about signs, where to go and what I'd be doing. In a nutshell, I didn't know he was expecting me to navigate. I did take a video (deleted), but it wasn't fit for all audiences.

We parked my vehicle and went to check in. I didn't want to mess with the bags if the room wasn't ready. It was about 3pm and I'd listed our estimated arrival time as 11:30am when doing online checkin. Not sure if it helped, but our room was ready. Which was good because I was a little let down that the guy who checked us in wasn't very enthusiastic or personable. So, since the room was ready we opted to check out the room before figuring out the bag situation. i.e. if it was close enough, we might bring in our own bags. Too bad our room was a million miles away...I swear, any farther and we'd be staying at the Dolphin.

The room was really nice though...a corner room on the 1st floor with a quiet pool from our patio view and a nice water area and lush greenery from our two side windows.

That "more willing little boy" is my nephew! My sister had sent me the video right after the show - he was soooo excited that he got picked to roar.

I'm really enjoying your report. My daughter turned 4 in October and we're definitely trying to plan a trip for 2013. She was 2 the last time she went and Pooh & friends were her favorite then. Now that she is all about the princesses, I can't wait to experience that through her eyes. I can't even imagine how excited she would be to actually meet a princess. Thanks for sharing your vacation!

Merry Christmas to you as well and love the video it was so cute.

Thanks! So glad that DH took the vid...makes it so much easier when he can worry about that while I take pics :)

Merry Christmas! I'm not sure what you're seeing with your pictures, but they look fine from here. The video is cute, too.

It seems to be better now - minus my cupcake pic (which is technically unrelated, so not a big deal), but for whatever reason- 2/3 of the pics weren't showing just after i'd posted them. So odd. Oh well- at least it's OK now. :)

Your cake is amazing!!

Thanks! Definitely the year of wreath bakes goods for me :D Now to plan out the next cake!

That is too funny! I can't believe that that's your nephew! It really is a Small World :D He did a great job too!

It definitely is cool getting to see them meet their faves. The girls were so in awe of the princesses on their first trip...well, really in awe of everything. It's really fun how many CMs will refer to them as "princess"- totally makes them feel like they are a part of it. Thanks for reading! :)

How exciting that the girls were in the show!! :) FotLK is my favorite show there. It's so pretty.

I was sooooo excited that they got to be in the show :) They can be so timid at times, but this totally helped get them over some of those fears...even if just for a few minutes. It really is such a visually stunning show...glad I could convince DH to do it.

Well, I hope everyone had a great Christmas. It hurts a little to type as I cut my knuckle while building the Barbie Dreamhouse, but countless Barbie dolls are no longer homeless and I'm ready to start back up with the trip report!

So, we exited FotLK, now totally excited about the experience but still at a loss for what to do next. We had a little side issue after this as well. If you can't tell in the previous pics, Kendall refused to wear socks and she tends to get blisters when she wears any kind of mary jane shoe without socks...and today would be no exception. And of course this is the trip where I left my big first aid kit at home! At least we were close to the first aid building when all of this got bad, so that was our first stop. They had the perfect band-aid for the blister and just like that, we were back on our way to tour the park.

We headed towards the safari, but with it being the day before Thanksgiving, the park was getting really crowded!

The stand-by wait for the safari was around 80 min, so I pulled some FPs and decided to try something we've never done before...

I initially had a hard time getting a better pic of these guys...

...but them moving a bit and me moving a bit helped...well, some.

Sadly, the Okapi was hiding from us...

so we moved on.

We headed inside and checked out this chunky guy...

...not a big fan of these...

Now I personally could have spent a good hour just watching all of the African Cichlids...

I used to have a 40 gallon tank with a breeding colony, but disaster struck one day. We came home and the seals on the tank had failed and there was just water EVERYWHERE! I haven't been able to bring myself to getting another tank of that kind since...just a small tank with a fantail Oranda up in the girls' bathroom.

We aslo had fun finding the other animals hiding in all of this...

Then we camped out with the crowd in front of this tank in hopes we'd see a hippo or two. Kendall was trying to do a profile portrait with this guy...

...but she kept moving. Funny when the fish is more cooperative than the child!

And then finally, we see some hippo bottoms!

It's just so wild how that little area can be so quiet and go up many decibels as soon as a hippo becomes visible in the tank pane. It was pretty cool though...I mean, how often do you get to see a hippo or two?

Now, as cool as hippo time was...there really was one reason, and one reason only, that I wanted to head back on the trail....

GORILLAS!!!!!!!!!

I adore gorillas. I remember staying at a friend's house and watching Gorillas in the Mist as everyone else slept. By the time they woke up, I was a bawling mess. Later on in college, we had a ridiculous night where we challenged each other to bring the movie that would turn into the biggest sob-fest (odd things you do when you need a break from studying for finals). Everyone laughed thinking surely my little animal flick wouldn't top everyone else's tear jerkers...yeah, I won! Now, I realize that the movie is concerning the mountain gorilla and Disney has lowland gorillas, but I still think it's amazing to see any of the great apes in person. And if you didn't already guess...yeah, i took a bunch of gorilla pics.

...but they could also only tolerate sticking around for so long...so, we had to go.

We still had a chunk of time until our safari FPs would be good, so i was hoping we'd get in some other activities. Unfortunately, Sammie decided she was starving again...and this time it was borderline meltdown. We had been really good so far during this whole trip. I mean, we had our tense moments with the girls and a few little fights, but nothing like meltdowns on previous trips. We had a 2:45p adr at Sanaa and Sammie was willing to leave the park and just try and go early, but she hit that "I'm hungry now!" state that really requires instant gratification. It's unfortunate because she really wanted to go to Sanaa, but there was just no way it was happening. I also had a nightmare of a time trying to cancel it. Oh well.

I was hoping we'd be able to make it over to Flame Tree for lunch, but we ended up in front of Pizzafari and everyone but me wanted to go there. So, we went...

We had pizzas and macaroni...

...festive chocolate mousse...

...a cheesecake thingy...

...and even though it was crazy insane in there, they still insisted we get some birthday cupcakes...again.

I'm really picky about pizza. I grew up in NJ in a town that was predominantly Italian. so I have certain standards when it comes to pizza. That's not to say I won't eat it or at least try it if it's not like what I could get from that area, but it usually means I'll be disappointed. And yes, I really did not care for this pizza. What's really funny...DH is always on my case about this...saying all pizza is created equally and I'm just ridiculous. Yeah- he didn't like the Pizzafari pizza either. And the cheesecake thingy...odd. That stuff on top was almost like Jell-O.

So, farewell Pizzafari...your breakfast is good, your service is good, but I just can't handle the pizzas.

We still had lots of time to burn, so we decided to just walk around and see if there was anything else that interested the girls. And of course...I snapped pics along the way.

Sammie kept trying to jump in and join their show. She didn't quite grasp that people really didn't want to hear her drum.

It was finally about safari FP time...so we headed that way (love these trees)...

The stand-by time was around 85 min, but even the FP line had snaked all the way around. When stopped for a moment, Sammie even grabbed these ropes and insisted she was Robin Hood.

She made us call her Robin Hood the entire time we were in line!

Almost to the front of the line...

Time to board!!!

Coming up...safari and more AK!!!

...and I'm a happy camper because I LOVE lions!

Moving on to what actually is a warthog...

...followed up by- zebra time!

I swear, one of them kept looking up and giving us this dirty look...like "yeah, what are you lookin' at!?!?!?" It was a little odd. Even the girls wanted to know why he was looking at us like that.

So, we finished with our safari and were like "what do we do next?" DH really had no interest in shows and he did promise the girls some facial artistry...so, we went in search of face painting (and really didn't have to go very far). When we got there, there was pretty much no line, but as the girls tried to decide what they wanted- a bunch of people jumped in line...and of course, we were just standing there with them being indecisive. So, we joined the line and waited...

Sammie was now in an exceptionally goofy mood...

And as we waited, I shot a pic of this tree and tried to figure out where I'd last seen a tree like this...

I know I've seen trees like this before- if not the same variety...in the same family, but I still for the life of me can't figure out what and where.

The wait took a while, but we were entertained. There was a family with adult children in front of us...and everyone...even the older men (like my dad's age and older...i.e. 60s-70s) were all getting their faces painted. LOVED IT! Then right in front of us was a family with a good 6 kids getting their faces painted. It is amazing though how fast these ladies doing the painting are able to do all of this.

Kendall was taken first out of our little group...

getting comfy...

So, back to Miss Sams...

Her design was fairly simple, and she was done in no time...

So yeah, she got the tribal one...

She's at least very happy...

And everyone around got a good laugh...pointing out how the girls are just such polar opposites. One younger guy even complimented Sammie on her choice and said he was looking at doing the same thing.

We really had no idea what to do next and the parade was soon to start. We didn't have any desire to watch this time...I think we were paraded out...so we headed towards the tree.

Of course, we have a really hard time passing up drums...

We have such fond memories from these drums from our 2010 trip. Back in 2010, we got to these drums really early and had some really cool help/interaction from this guy...

...but alas, it would just be us and other kids drumming this trip. :(

The reality- I don't think either girl remembered this from their last trip to AK nor do I think they really cared. They had a blast drumming- and that's really all that matters.

So, I stood there taking pics of the tree while they drummed...

...and then we decided we really needed to move on. It was getting late and we had a decent drive ahead of us that night. So, now the goal was trying to get out of AK during the parade...not an easy task since we weren't permitted to go back the way we came in.

So, we went deeper into AK and decided to hang out and see if the Siamangs would come out and play...

Not only would they come out to play...

We'd get to see a full on acrobatics show from these guys (part of why I really like them)...

And then there were 2!

They are just so entertaining to watch...

It was about this moment (below) when the girls asked if we could bring one home...

Yeah- that was a big fat NO!

And just like that- they're back to swinging around...

??? Monkey and Moon ???

Picking back up...

The parade was still in full swing...

...so we were still having to go the long way to get out.

Everybody let me stop for a couple of seconds to try and get some Everest pics...

The first one was rushed...

...but the second was much better...

Thankfully, the bulk of the crowds were around the parade, so we were finding it pretty easy to cut a path to make a quick getaway...

It then hit me that I forgot to buy some gifts for my nephew...so we stopped into a shop and after hunting down infant wear...I wound up getting him a Mickey hoodie (the one that kind of makes the wearer look like Mickey) and a plush Donald.

I knew as soon as I saw this...the end was near.

....yet, here I am walking still trying to take lighting pics.

We were really rushing at this point, but I also tried to snap tree pics on the way out.

And then I saw this pulling up...

I looked off to the buses, being hit with waves of jealousy that all of these were people headed to other parks or back to their Disney resorts...i.e. people who weren't getting ready to leave...

...but it was time for us to load onto our tram and head back to our ride.

It's funny, DH had suggested we walk from the car to the entrance earlier that day...and he'd suggest it again when we left. Considering Kendall had a blister and Sammie complained of tired legs 2 or 3 times...I wasn't dreaming of making them walk back to the car. I guess at least our first stroller free day was a success since every time Sammie whined about it- we told her the only option was leaving the park- which quickly halted any complaining.

So, I make my last wave good-bye to AK and the tree...

I was feeling pretty sad as we loaded up into the car. While we had fun at AK, it was probably the one day of the trip where we were at odds with each other and just didn't feel like we did as much. So, you couple that with having to officially leave WDW for this trip and I was really starting to get down. Yet, as sad as I was feeling...I was oddly also ready to go and had a feeling the sadness wouldn't stick too long since we weren't heading straight home.

I did such a good job of convincing myself that I'd have less post trip sadness that I almost didn't notice this as we drove by...

The drive to my parents' house wasn't too bad...except for the tolls. DH complained about the ones from I-75 all the way to WDW, but it's nothing compared to the tolls from Orlando to south FL. I think we paid close to $25 in tolls! Still we arrived without issue and got there early enough to enjoy some of the night before Thanksgiving.

What's really funny, I was still in Disney photo mode...so by Thanksgiving day...I was still taking pics of lighting and food and other little details...

And Kendall was still bothered by all of it...

But she got over it once I let her pose in my mom's shoes...

And their dog, Callie, just looked on like I was nuts- but still loving it all...

It made me sad when you left WDW! I think it's worse going to a park and leaving the same day than it is to leave the next day. Our last trip was the first time we went home right after leaving a park (Epcot if you wanted to know). It was the saddest walk of my life from World Showcase to the gates! After that we still headed back to the resort to buy a few things at the gift shop and refill our mugs, but it just didn't feel right. :( However, there's always next trip! :D
