Imax

Not to try and rain on everyone's parade but, are we a 100% sure they aren't just converting one or two of their existing theaters?

No, we don't, and it's certainly possible. But one advantage against that would be that they converted the big screen at Muvico in Pointe Orlando recently, so that might serve as motivation for IMAX (if it is their decision) to build a brand new full size one instead of converting again. Certainly, if they were thinking long-term, that would result in greater profit if they could tout it as "Florida's Largest Screen" or something like that.

Am I correct that there are no other true imax theaters in central/central florida? I have only seen a true imax listed at cape canaveral and maybe one in tampa.???

There is IMAX in Orlando now, a converted screen, at Pointe Orlando on International Drive, and there is one in Tampa at Channelside.

Am I missing something...what I read on AMC's site is that AMC 24 is getting an Imax...I don't see anywhere where it says that it's going into Virgin. It wouldn't surprise me if theatre 1 or 2 goes through that transition but I don't see it going into Virgin unless it's there and I'm missing it.

It doesn't as far as I can see, I'm not sure where the OP found that information.

Finally, something that will bring some life back into that area! I have always enjoyed going to the AMC theatre IMAX will be agreat addition no matter if it is in the current AMC building or Virgin.

This will be a great addition wherever it goes. Ever since they released Fantasia 2000 in IMAX format, I always wondered why they wouldn't have an IMAX of their own on property. It would be cool to see them offer a variety of their old and new films that have been released in IMAX format.

the AMC in channel side of Tampa... the muvico in St. Pete... MOSI has a imax dome in Tampa...

then there are the other really big screens being called imax in others areas...

but the dome is a great experience..

This is highly doubtful. AMC over the past 18 months has been converting existing theatre space into IMAX Digital screens. There has been a huge uproar in the IMAX community because the screens that they have been converting are much smaller than regular IMAX screens. Basically what AMC is doing is taking out the front seats in a theatre and moving them closer to the stadium seats. In this situation they are probably just taking one of the large theatres at the PI 24 and converting it like they have been doing to other theatres nationwide.

I agree that this sounds like they are converting one of the existing theaters. While some conversions are being done on the cheap I think it is more likely this conversion will be top of the line and will be a full size version. I don't think Disney would have approved it other wise.

Great addition as the new DTD continues to evolve. :xmas:
Way to go TDO! :)

I was wondering about this. I went to see 'Monsters vs. Aliens' in IMAX 3D at an AMC theater last week and I was so excited because it's relatively close to my house. I went inside and had to check to make sure I was in the correct theater because the screen was standard size. I knew that traditional IMAX screens were supposed to be much larger, but I brushed it off and moved on.

Does it still fill your peripheral vision since I guess you would be closer to the screen?

I sat closer to the screen than usual and it still didn't fill my periphery. I sat a few rows ahead of the middle row in the theater. When I first came in I walked a few rows up from the middle row and had to move back towards the front. The effects were amazing, but that movie sucked big time.

I'm very interested in seeing live-action movies in IMAX 3D. The sequel to 'Night at the Museum' will be next for me, and 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' will also be in 3D. I could've sworn I heard that 'Up' was going to be the first Pixar movie in IMAX 3D. Is that true?

This is good news. There is a lot of Disney movies coming on 3D.

There is a distinct difference between an IMAX movie, and a '3d' movie.. It is true that there are '3d' IMAX movies, but not all IMAX movies are in '3d'...

I can see '3d' movies at the Pleasure Island 24 TODAY... But I cannot see 'IMAX' movies.. Which are NOT inherently '3d'.. There are only inherently in 'LARGE' format.... 3d or not.

Having said that.. I believe that they are CONVERTING existing screens at the AMC 24, not using the Virgin building.. The virgin building is not connected, so it would be a little disjointed.

Additionally, if they are simply modifying the existing theater.. The question is, are they modifying existing cinemas, or will they demolish a few cinemas to make way for the 'larger' IMAX screen? again, inherently, IMAX screens are 2-3 times the size of a traditional cinema screen.. There have been recent installations of IMAX on traditional screens, but the 'IMAX Fan Community' frowns on it, because it's not true '100%' IMAX..

Again, IMAX is about immersive scale... it has nothing to do with '3d'... Although, again, an IMAX film CAN BE in 3d.... but so can tradition projection films.. And they are currently shown at the AMC 24 at this very moment.. Monsters Vs Aliens is playing there NOW in 3d.

PErsonally, IU saw Nightmare before Christmas, and Bolt both in 3d at that theater in the last 6 months, and they have played many others, including coraline, my bloody valentine, etc...

The local AMC 30 near me (outside of Kansas City) opened an Imax theater about a year and a half ago. All that they did was remodel one of the already larger theaters (it took about 6 months to do). After regrading the floor of the theater, changing the seating arrangement, and adding the Imax Screen, the theater re-opened, billed as a brand new theater.

I'm not saying it won't go into Virgin, I just think this is the more probable result.

I agree with you. AMC/Loews recently did this in my town. I think it's highly unlikely that an AMC IMAX theater will be constructed in the vacated Virgin location. Sorry to rain on everyone's parade.

I think the OP indulged and exaggerated just a bit.:hammer:

South Florida has a true IMAX theater in Ft. Lauderdale. That screen completely fills your peripheral vision. So amazing.
