Imax

Am I correct that there are no other true imax theaters in central/central florida? I have only seen a true imax listed at cape canaveral and maybe one in tampa.???

No, we don't, and it's certainly possible. But one advantage against that would be that they converted the big screen at Muvico in Pointe Orlando recently, so that might serve as motivation for IMAX (if it is their decision) to build a brand new full size one instead of converting again. Certainly, if they were thinking long-term, that would result in greater profit if they could tout it as "Florida's Largest Screen" or something like that.

There is IMAX in Orlando now, a converted screen, at Pointe Orlando on International Drive, and there is one in Tampa at Channelside.

the AMC in channel side of Tampa... the muvico in St. Pete... MOSI has a imax dome in Tampa...

then there are the other really big screens being called imax in others areas...

but the dome is a great experience..

took us awhile to get here...but someone finally got it mostly right in Tampa. The Channelside theater is a Muvico theater though...IMO Muvico is a much nicer presentation than AMC Theaters are..

and IMAX Dome Theaters are soooo much better than a standard IMAX theather. I hope they'll be putting one of those in at DTD.

This could be what we're getting:

IMAX Digital
A digital version of IMAX started rolling out in 2008. The new system is a projection standard only; there are no digital IMAX cameras.

Digital IMAX systems can show either normal or 3D content in DCI or IMAX digital format (which in itself is a superset of DCI). Being a digital system alleviates the need for the use of bulky film reels and facilitate inexpensive distribution of IMAX features, the more compact nature of digital equipment means the system can fit inside a normal multiplex cinema complex rather than the specialised buildings IMAX normally requires.

Despite those advantages, one big disadvantage is the resolution of the picture is much lower than normal IMAX. The screens used by digital IMAX installations are also much smaller than those found in traditional IMAX cinemas. Despite these facts, the digital installations are marketed simply as IMAX, drawing no distinction to the traditional 15/70 IMAX – much to the dismay of 15/70 IMAX cinema owners.

Deals have already been signed with Hollywood studios for IMAX 3D features, such as "Shrek Goes Fourth 3D".

IMAX digital currently uses two 2K-resolution Christie projectors with Texas Instruments Digital Light Processing technology alongside parts of IMAX's proprietary system. The two 2K images are projected over each other, producing an image that is potentially of a slightly higher resolution than common 2K digital cinema. Originally, IMAX had been considering using two Sony 4K projectors.

IMAX recently signed a deal with AMC to start utilizing this new technology beginning July 2008 in the US. In December 2008 two digital screens were opened inside Odeon Cinemas in the UK and three inside Hoyts Cinemas in Australia with a fourth to follow later in 2009.

Does anyone know a good resource for knowing which screens are which sizes?

There's an IMAX style dome at the Orlando Science Center, but it doesn't show regular movies.

You mean an Omnimax theater? We have one here at the St. Louis science center too, but like yours in only shows educational documentary films rather than main stream movies.

Don't Imax movies always cost more? I thought that was the point. Kinda like they charge more for steak than hamburger :lookaroun

I think the argument is that if they just convert screens 1 and 2, then it isn't a true IMAX screen and therefore shouldn't charge the additional cost that a normal IMAX theater would.

What's the difference if it's an IMAX system on a normal screen?

The difference from a non-dome IMAX and a regular screen is just the MAX one is bigger. That's it. If that's what DTD is getting, it's really nothing to be that excited about.

Pretty sure a new larger screen is part of the deal. Just a hunch.

So Muvico took over the chanelside theaters too? I thought they only had starlight in new tampa (no imax...) Centro Ybor (no muvico.. but has a dinner and movie type concpr) and St. Pete...

Imax changed the name from omnimax to imax dome.. MOSI used to call it MOSImax for many years, now it's the Imax dome at MOSI... and unlike some other imax domes... They do show commercail movies from time to time.. like the Dark Knight.

I don't remember Channelside ever being anything else, I think it's been Muvico since I started going there about 4 years ago.
