Imagination! Being Replaced w. Dr. Doof?

If you haven't seen it then you need to go to marni1971's (Martin) blog website and watch his tribute and ridethrough of the original version. That would give you a taste of what people miss so dearly. It is completely different than the current version in every way.

The original Imagination was one of the best and most creative rides ever made. Not to even mention the upstairs Imageworks.

That definitely seems much better than what they have there now. Thanks for the suggestion.

we just got back from 12 days in WDW, and we made sure we rode figment several times-easy to do, which is both happy and sad.

i am one who never got to ride the original-my first trip to WDW was in 2003. but even in its current form, im a fan and my kids (ages 7, 7, 7 and 2) love him. after the first trip on it this year, my 2 year old kept asking to go back on it, and would randomly during the vacation blurt out "follow the bouncing figment".

so, it might be a super small sample, but figment is still able to appeal to the kids-hes a cute purple dragon, whats not to love.

when i told my wife we had to ride figment as much as we wanted because who knows what happens between now and our next trip in 2015...the kids got upset.

for what its worth, and for my time, i'd much rather ride figment again over soarin'. with soarin', i hit it once every trip, and i leave saying it was nice, but its overdue for a new movie.

here is hoping there's no demo, just a revitalization for a newer and better pavillion

"Mystic Manor"..."monkey magician" - I may be wrong, but I thought that I read somewhere that "Mystic Manor" is an Imagineers "oriental" version of our beloved "Haunted Mansion" since the oriental culture have different ideas about death, ghosts and hauntings than we as westerners. Anybody else ever hear that???

This is an interesting point. It makes sense to me that Far East Asians (many, anyway-- I want to be careful not to stereotype) would have a very different cultural sense of what makes a 'ghost story.'

I still think a version of MM would work in FW just because-- to my Western eyes, anyway-- MM reads like more of a dreamscape than a haunted mansion. Plus you have the bonus of a ride where the Imagineers just 'went to town' in terms of creativity. I think it's a good fit with some tweaks.

I think the bottom line, based on alllll the comments here, is that everyone agrees the current version needs to be changed... it's "to what" that the disagreements are based on. When you really think about it, that's kind of sad. I haven't seen one person truly stand up for the current version and say they'd be sad to see it go. I can't think of any other attraction on property that would happen with and that says a lot when it comes to those of us who frequent these forums and are often opinionated. :D

This is why The Haunted Mansion is in Fantasyland at Tokyo Disneyland. Another issue to consider is the Mainland, which is officially atheist. While Hong Kong is not subject to the same religious laws as the Mainland, Hong Kong Disneyland has a sizable number of visitors from the Mainland. Mystic Manor was is development during the final stages of approval for Shanghai Disneyland and there was no need to push any buttons.

I know this is a bit of a tired argument, but how relevant is Song of the South today? Have anyone's kids seen the movie? Is it even available on DVD? Yet Splash Mountain is one of the most popular rides. If the ride and show building are done well (a big IF) the fact that P&F are characters in it will become secondary. In 15 years if the show isn't on anymore (very likely, but see the Simpsons for evidence that a cartoon can last forever) the ride can still carry itself if its done right.

The characters actually would fit in thematically IMHO. Maybe have something like Dr Doof built an innator that takes people's imagination. P&F attempt to stop him. There's no reason they can't have Figment appear with them. P&F just did a crossover episode with the Marvel Superheroes. Even if the ride doesn't feature the characters they should consider redoing the 3D movie and they could still have a meet and greet.

But Disney does not weave IP into attractions like they used to, when Splash Mountain opened. Look at the name. Nothing in the Splash Mountain name even mentions the characters, the movie, or anything regarding the movie. It isn't "Song of the South: The Ride." The original Journey Into Imagination wasn't titled "Dreamfinder and Figment's Imagination Adventure" or anything like that. I don't have faith in Disney in the present age. Look at The Living Seas. They didn't even leave the name alone. They changed it to "The Seas with Nemo and Friends." Screw up the attraction, then jam the fact that it includes IP characters down our throats. The same with Ellen's Energy Adventure. Change the attraction, add the character name to the title, and assume that by doing so you don't need to actually invest in maintaining quality, engaging attractions, because the character tie-in will take care of all of it. Character tie-ins seem to have become a way for TDO to avoid creating high quality attractions with good stories.

Splash is a high quality, engaging, and fun attraction, and the purpose of it is NOT to sell DVDs. The purpose of things like The Seas with Nemo IS to tie to an IP to sell products, as would "Imagination with Phineas and Ferb." It isn't creative and it simply isn't a good fit for EPCOT - and with the TDO track record it would likely result in a sub-par attraction. <- those are two separate issues: sub-par attraction, and no good in EPCOT.

It just feels too small of a scope for something that should be grand. Sort of the way I feel about Ellen in Energy. Not terrible, but feels more like an after-school special on energy, instead of a big grand mind-blowing exploration of energy...which is what EPCOT should do. Imagination with P+F would feel like an after-school special on being creative...which isn't grand and isn't what EPCOT should be about. I want things that make me say "wow." P+F, Nemo, Ellen, etc, don't make me say "wow." They make me want to avoid small-minded attractions, and their respective intellectual properties in general.

Dreamfinder and Figment, in their original incarnation, somehow managed to grab a grand scope while being engaging charters - something we haven't seen from Disney in a long time.

IMHO, anyway.

Does anyone actually believe that 15 years down the road, we will still care about this TV show? It will be long gone and forgotten.

Who can say?
People still care about Talespin, Darkwing Duck, and Gargoyles.

On the other hand, no one cares about Song of the South, but Splash Mountain is still a great ride.

This thread's still going on? oh jeez lol.

Anywho, I really doubt the pavilion is gonna be demolished because that would cost a ton of money to build a new one and when you think about it unless there's a sink-hole, it really makes no sense. It would seem like they were doing it just to be mean which would just fuel my theory that they actually secretly hate their fans and want to drive them all away for some odd reason. (that was a joke calm down......I hope) Either that or there's a spy for universal who at one time thought Epcot a legitimate threat because Universal doesn't do Intellectual rides.

I like the open ended answer about the Dreamfinder. Its very encouraging. I wish I could go work on that project myself since over the years I developed so many ideas about what could go there. lol. But seriously, last night I had yet another Phinneas and Ferbination! nightmare where they turned imageworks into a bunch of lame lego tables and kiddie blocks like you find at nursery schools. I told my sis about it and she like was hysterical laughing. If an elementary school kid finds ideas like that ridiculous I can only imagine what most people would say about that!

KEEP THE PYRAMIDS! It is a defining point in Epcots architecture. It can be seen in all the ariel shots, and seems to be the second prettiest thing after the Geosphere of SSE. The Pavillion could still look modern today, It looks a bit like something out of a colony in star trek but If you get a real good look at buildings being built today and the surrounding plazas its all glass windows unique fountains, and huge planters. It fits right in!

I think Mystic Manor is a bad idea because Its not a good fit for future world. The building is what busts up that idea for me. However It is similar to Imagination in many ways (the good one not the poopy one). I may see it as a better fit in Animal Kingdom if they ever made an enchanted creatures land like the beastly kingdom was gonna be.

Of course for me, I would LOVE to have a "Mystic Manor". We could use a little more spooky thrill around the ol WDW!! And definitely more rides!! I grew up just 2 hours from Cedar Point and I LOVE rides!!

It's not like the Chinese don't have a fascination with scary ghosts, or even amusement park haunted houses.

Besides Imagineering's desire to try something new, I think part of the "inspiration" behind Mystic Manor was the opportunity to sell more plush.

Well, Disneyland does have Gadget's Go Coaster. Gotta Love Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers!

Actually, I did love that cartoon, as I watched it every day after school while it was in it's first run on TV. I know that dates me.

Lol Like I always say, no one goes on that for the theming! Its an introductary coaster for kids before they are brave/big enough for space mt or the matterhorn at least thunder. I know many people think its Inspector gadget who is also outdated before they go on it. I'm just glad a rollercoaster is themed to girl for once >:p MOVE OVER SUPERMAN We are edging in on your territory!!

And no it wont date you, I'm in my 20s and I remember that and have tons of it taped somewhere. It was that, Tailspin, Ducktails, Goof Troop, Darkwing Duck, That was when children's television was built to last.

Another reason They are classic characters and are more imaginative than Gravity Falls, P&F, And half of the mediocre cartoons that came during Disney's One Saturday Morning..

I was around when they were all new...and were great. That afternoon lineup was wonderful. My little brother was Darkwing Duck for Halloween one year - great home-made costume (thanks mom!).

That said, I don't want my EPCOT rides to carry theming from any of them...
