Illuminations Earth Barge "Issues" & Drunk ECV Driver (9/28)

Just got back from what was a disappointing showing of Illuminations, (Not that I was upset because I get to see it often). The issues started right from the beginning. The show started about 2 minutes after nine and the pre-show music was still playing through the beginning of the opening narration. The opening of the show with the first fireworks didn't go off right. The one pyro that comes from in front of the American pavilion went off but the shells that create the illusion of it exploding did not go off at all.
Then when it came time for the Earth barge to come out it did not rotate at all. About half way through it's few minute solo, it rotated about 1.5 times, and then stopped again and didn't make a single motion for the rest of the show. Too bad for the people who had the view of the Pacific Ocean side of the globe the whole show.
When it came time for the finale, there was no rotation, it didn't open, no fire, and no pyros from the Earth barge, so for that portion there was nothing but music. At this point, I'm sure that the techs just aborted all effects on the Earth barge except for the projections. They probably didn't want to take the chance of it partially opening or getting stuck open, and then not being able to get it backstage through the bridge to the marina.

First of all the park was packed tonight because of the Halloween party over at MK. Tonight I witnessed a few intoxicated guests on what is Opening day of the Food and Wine Festival. The most memorable one was in front of the American Adventure Pavilion. There was a man who was already overly intoxicated who was driving an ECV with one hand and he had another beer in his other hand. He was swerving all over the main pathway, with was very crowded, infront of the funnel cake stand. He finally ran his ECV into another man, who also happened to be carrying a beer. Needless to say the man he ran into lost his balance and spilled his beer all over the man on the ECV. Then there were some not-so-kind words spoken for everyone in the area to hear, who were already all starring at them. Thankfully they were both so drunk that they didn't even know what they were yelling about and went they're own separate ways.

Other than that I had a great day and had a lobster roll and 2 strawberry shortcakes at the America stand for the F&WF.:)

Wow...all I can say is Wow...

We'll be there in three weeks, and if a drunk on an ECV hits either of my kids, I'm probably going to need to bailed out of the local jail. That, and the drunk will no longer need an ECV. If they survive, they'll need an electric wheel chair instead! :fork::fork:

Other than that, I hope they can get everything working properly again before Monday night!! (Which, I'm ashamed to say, I have to miss....)

Wow, that's awful to hear. :( Also stinks about Illuminations and it's technical issues. Hopefully they'll get those kinks worked out by Monday for the big show.

The Earth Barge has done that before. Its typically a computer failure, low hyrdaulic pressure, or electrical. The video and the motion are seperate, and since it all works together, with a complete failure the globe would not open for fear they couldn't get it closed again. It has to be closed to get back to the maintenance area.

Just so everyone knows, an ECV is an electric wheelchair. It stands for
Electric
Convenience
Vehicle

Not really. I meant the type for people that are unable to walk at all. You (usually) need to be able to sit normally on an ECV. My father used one for the last few years of his life. Just so everyone knows, that is.

Sorry, I didn't mean for that post to sound like it was a reply to your's...I was just clarifying what an ECV was for everyone since I didn't state it in my original post. :o

I was at Epcot last night too. Maybe I'm a stuffy fuddy duddy but I left early. I didn't like the night time food and wine fest vibe at all. It felt more like a county fair than Epcot. I couldn't believe the amount of people stumbling around. There were far too many visably drunk people there for my taste. I can't imagine the amount of money people must have to spend to get drunk. I'm glad I didn't bother to stay for Illuminations.

What do people drink at EPCOT to get so drunk?
Seems like the average person would just get a few beers, which should not affect most people.

:)
At this time of year some people try to Drink Their Way Around The World type of contest. To see how far they can get before they need help moving around. I've seen it before and I try to avoid them altogether, but sometimes when you are enjoying yourself you forget to watch out for the inconsiderate ones.

I see these posts pop up every time around the beginning of the F&WF..... Although I agree that getting sloppy drunk at EPCOT is bad form, and the CMs should have a little more leniency to use judgment when serving drunkards.

I think I may be in a part of the population that goes to the F&WF to enjoy beverages from all regions of the world, that I don't normally get to experience. I admit I am a beer lover/connoisseur; and after a nice long day of strolling with my wife having multiple beverages I am probably going to be nice and tipsy..

That being said I think that responsible adults for the most part can delineate between being trashed at a kegger in your buddy's backyard and drinking to enjoy yourself in a family environment. Unfortunately as with all groups it seems that the most annoying and boisterous and in this case hammered casts a shroud of irresponsibility and over indulgence upon the entire group.

I'm sure EPCOT has plenty of plain clothed security, especially after dark to ensure nobody gets unruly. It is unfortunate that they did not diffuse this situation before it happened.

My wife and I are driving up to EPCOT tomorrow for Celebration 25 and feel free to say hi. Ill be the one in the Viking helmet probably with a beer in my hand enjoying myself

I'm sorry about your experience... Come on back and hang with us, we'll show you how real F&WF revelers enjoy themselves. :sohappy:
