I wonder if some of Iger's rationale for leaving was that if I can't get my parks open and I have to lay off 28,000 of my cast members, should I really be on this board? Said another way, I'm doing a poor job of helping out my company and CMs so it would look really bad if I stayed on the board.
Does he even care

Business leaders of his stature rarely have that much humility.

The tin foil wearing part of me thinks that Iger already got what he set out to accomplish: pinning layoffs on a delayed reopening caused by an external force. It does seem so strange that, with the governor now willing to continue talking about the reopening plans, Iger would suddenly step away.

You may be on to something. As much as I’ve been willing to criticize Newsom here for his lack of flexibility and perceived uneven treatment of the theme park industry, there is more than certainly enough blame to go around here.

And as someone who works in Government Affairs it seems surprising, if not downright unbelievable, that a Fortune 500 company like TWDC would have such a feckless GR operation. From their failure to compromise/triangulate with the Administration to their apparent inability to coordinate/back channel with aligned interests, from their state trade (CAPA, CalChamber, etc), unions, local government, and industry partners.

Umm, no, that 20 week extension has already been used, EDD automatically added that to the unemployment.

But let's assume you are right, most CMs are getting around $250 a week in unemployment without the extra $300 (which has now ended in California unless they get an extension and more funding for it). This means they would need to live off of $1,000 per month before taxes for rent, food, car payments, clothing, etc.

Oh, and if the theme parks are closed much longer all of them will be laid off and then they have to come up with $1,000 per month for health insurance or get fined for not having it. They won't qualify for assistance with health insurance, because the extra $300 to $600 and unemployment count as income towards determining eligibility. So that leaves them with $0 per month to live off of.

Not going to work well. It is time to reopen.
You are wrong. Fed-Ed kicks in AFTER the 13 week federal extension which kicks in after the 26 week state-funded benefits are exhausted.

There may be some of that, but I think the bigger concern is when lawsuits start getting filed because the state still isn't working with the theme parks, it would present a conflict of interest if he was still on the board.

Even if what you say is true (which I don't believe it is based on what I have seen), the point remains that with the cost of healthcare no on them, they would have $0 per month to live off of, even if they can continue getting unemployment benefits.

There are no longer fines for not having insurance.

I am currently on UI and hyper-aware of how it works regardless of what you've "seen". Many many CM's who are being let go are part time and did not have health insurance through Disney. I do agree, though, that for most CM's the amount of UI they are getting is not enough to live on. I get the max amount and it barely covers my living expenses. The sooner the parks open the better it will be for all of us financially.
