If you hate the hat at DHS, now is the time to say something.

Disney did not post my message

These were my exact words. Disney did not post it to the blog. Let me know if you think this was offensive-

"Just like the wand in Epcot, the hat in Hollywood Studios is an eyesore. Remove it. I think it's clear that the people have spoken".

Wow, JT. I actually agree with you 100% :lookaroun

Serious question: which MUST be removed first: millenium tarps or bigasshat?
The hat, and it's not even close. I'd like the tarps taken down, but whatever, they don't really bother me. The hat ruins the entrance to that park.

This is sort of irrelevant to the main discussion here, but neither the castle nor Spaceship Earth is really an original design. Both Snow White and Cindy's castle are essentially Neuschwanstein--I have a picture I took there from an angle that really shows the connection off. And SSE is a geodesic sphere, from the designs of Buckminster Fuller. It's the largest structure of its kind, I think, but by no means unique.
Here's a picture of the entrance to Europa Park in Germany. Opened 1975.

Ok so what is so wrong with the hat? I mean what is the icon supposed to be? Im sorry if Im missinformed but I consider the hat a permanent icon of Disneys Hollywood Studios and would be very upset if they took it down or even moved it! :(

The park was just fine with a beautiful, perfectly scaled, fantastically themed entrance without the hat. The icon was the Earful tower, which is less of an icon, but that's also a much less important thing. You don't have to destroy theme, scale and sight lines to make an icon.

Permanent means last forever. The hat was designed to be temporary, looks temporary and the only reason people think it is the permanent icon is Disney did not remove it after 100 Years of Magic thus a generation thinks it was always there. Same with the Epcot Wand.

I agree as well. I like the hat in and of itself but I dislike the fact that it hides the Chinese Theatre behind and disrupts the original design of the park.

those panzies denied my comment!:fork: all i said was its better off as a perimeter piece. what theyve done now is likk setting it in front of Cinderellas castle at the roundabout or in front of SSE in the Leave A Legacy area its an obstruction to the parks focal point. Wow lawd forbid they become able to handle some criticizing

I said what everyone else was saying. Remove the hat. I don't know what the rules are for censoring but it seems pretty arbitrary and subject to the whim of the reviewer.

The official blog's comment section is typically full of sycophantic messages loving every announcement DisneyParks makes. To have the vast majority of comments (that pass the moderator) decrying the hat, calling for its removal from its current location, is a much deserved public embarrassment.

Would Walt have said they are "weenie-blocking"?

Post of the millennium, right here.

PS. My mind is blown at the number of people defending the hat, or saying they don't care whether it stays or goes. Really? It's a total affront to the theory and practice of themed design! Look at the pictures from pre-2001, with the gorgeous theater at the end of that wonderfully themed Hollywood Boulevard. Everything scaled perfectly, with wonderful sightlines. It was so atmospheric! And look at it now! How does it make sense to have a giant hat there? Not to mention that it also replaced the lawn in front of the Theater, leaving this huge expanse of pavement to radiate heat. I can understand how people might think the hat is neat and want it moved to somewhere more appropriate, but I just can't fathom how anyone used to the quality design of Disney parks can abide its current placement.

Save the hat!

I don't think the Earful Tower is a great icon for the park. How does that reflect movies or Hollywood? The sorcerer's hat is a fantastic piece of movie magic history. The theatre can't be the icon because it's not Disney. So, to round up - Keep hat? Yes. :) Move hat? Yes. :) Destroy hat? No.

i hope the hat is never used again.

my fear is that wherever it is moved will serve as another pin location. kinda anti-climatic to been drawn into it only to find pins.

That's not hat-free. It's just gotten smaller and placed on Mickey's head.

Because Watertowers are a longtime fixture of studios in Hollywood. Every studio has a distinctive watertower on their backlot. WB's tower even has a trio of squatters living in there with the film archives.
And if it wasn't a hat, but a giant poisonous apple or a big glass slipper instead, would you still think it belonged because it was Disney and a piece of movie magic history?
