I live in Northern McHenry County, IL, The roads early this morning were very icey with slush on top, with falling rain for my drive into work. I work in Northern Kane county, IL which is about 25-30 miles south from where I live. As I got closer to work the roads became less icey and just wet. My biggest worry is getting home tonight and whether or not we'll have electricity, with the ice collecting on the trees and power-lines. All the schools in my area have been closed for today, so the kids are safely at home with their mommy. This morning isn't as bad as I thought it would be, main highways are clear, secondary roads are dicey. I've ordered over 1,500 pounds of salt for work to keep things from getting too slippery, 500 pounds arrived last night, I'm expecting the rest this morning. I used 800 pounds yesterday morning alone, to melt the ice from the storm we had this past Saturday, which is twice as much salt that I used all last winter. Luckily the supply house I've been using out of Vernon Hills, IL is keeping me supplied. A lot of the snow plow companies in my area are having trouble getting salt delivered. It's all hand to mouth, no reserves. Hopefully, we'll fare better here than our neighbors to the south, but I'm prepared for the worst, I can handle snow, but ice storms stop everything. I've seen these people driving all these SUVs with four wheel drive racing on the slick roads not knowing if they realize that if they hit a patch of ice, four wheel drive won't save them from flying off the road or into someone else. It may take me hours to get home tonight.
