Hurricane Matthew

Why do I hate FSU?

1. Their Fans.
2. Their Fans.
3. Their Fans.

Every time they played UM they were obnoxious.

I do realize that people say the same thing about my team..lol

Yeah, your team is why there is an excessive celebration penalty. ;)

But I repeat my comment about Florida fans. The one and only Florida game my daughter attended in Gainesville was a nightmare. Florida fans making nasty comments to my 10 year old daughter. And when she cheered our winning touchdown, a woman my mother's age turned around and gave her both middle fingers. It was all I could do to not say something. But I was a guest and we have more class in Tallahassee (unless you're the Legislature).

My sister drove up last night and brought food and water that we added to what I already had in the room (we're at Pop Century). We spent the day at MK and had little to no lines for anything that we did. Once I read in the forums there was likely to be a 5pm closure we decided to leave around 2:30pm to give us time to get a hot meal at the cafeteria and head back to the rooms. We lucked out - the lines were absolutely insane right after we got there. They'd temporarily run out of the 12.99 lunch bags and were putting out more as we left. They were also still serving their regular dinner options and moving as fast as they could to accommodate the lines.

I will say that I have been surprised as to how Disney has notified guests. We received no letter under our door regarding the hurricane, though we did have a message waiting on the room phone (which I almost didn't notice because we never use it). No email alerts. And both the app and main website still had the "we are operating as normal and monitoring the situation" note up even after the announcement about the park closure at 5pm came up over the loud speaker.

Conversely, when we were in Hawaii during the 2011 tsunami, we were given a notice under the door, had notice from the hotel via email, and staff going door to door first to inform us, and then to eventually evacuate us. I have local family here, and tend to follow weather regardless (being stuck on vacation in both hurricanes and tsunamis previously will do that to you), But I had at least five conversations today with people who either had no idea there was a hurricane coming, period, or had no idea how strong it was...some were still thinking they'd get out tonight or tomorrow for their flights.

It is so nasty in Gainesville. I would usually attend the games with a large group..and we were pretty much a 50/50 split between UM and UF, all wearing our team's gear...and still the UF fans would talk so much garbage to us. Just nasty.

Had to edit for Gainesville.. Accidentally typed Tally. I hate UM for so many reasons I've lost count. Can't even type straight when talking about them lol

Governors out on state emergency hats, shirts, or jackets during emergencies. It's required attire. I believe Governor Bush always wore SERT (State Emergency Response Team) shirts.

He's indoors. He wasn't wearing that Navy hat during briefings on Hermine.

I'm actually here for this. My husband and I came in last Thursday. We were at Universal Monday - Wed. Never turned on tv. Barely looked at my phone, didn't hear any TMs talking about what they were going to do, so despite normally being very conscientious we were caught off guard by this. We stopped at Publix in Windermere on our way back to my Dad's got most of what we needed, but they were sold out of water, bread and some other stuff. This morning we went to the Winter Garden Publix and they had been restocked so we got supplies. In the 20 years we've been visiting Central Fl, and the 11 years my Dad has lived here, usually during hurricane season, this is the first time we're getting hit. Everyone usually stresses how rare it is for Orlando to get hit like this so even though you know a storm is coming it usually turns the other way, weakens, goes north or south etc. So I can't blame people in the bubble for not realizing how bad this was getting.

.
Yep, this is me...when I'm on vacation, I rarely turn on my phone and never the TV...I'd have to hear somebody talking about it or hopefully somebody from home would call me!

When we visit, I do make a point to put on WESH to get the weather and such. That's about all I watch "regular" tv for while there. It helps with mapping out what we're doing for the next day or few days.

Lots of raining atm. I am curious to see how this storm compares to charlie but things should be better here in orlando given the distance.

I guess you mean because Charley passed over Orlando. But it also had landfall in Port Charlotte meaning it lost a lot of power by the time it reached Orlando (and Orange County was on the bad side of the storm, too). Matthew will be much closer to Orlando at a stronger point, but a better side this time. Guess we'll see how it shakes out.

If you were traveling to Florida, during hurricane season, you wouldn't check the weather first? Not even to know if you should bring a poncho to the park that day?

Before the trip as well.. Matthew didn't just form in the last 24 hours. There was a storm right before my trip last year.. I definitely paid attention.

You are forgiven. But apparently we need to cease the football talk....

What??? The guy just said the Weather Channel is evacuating an area? No Jim C?
They've been evacuating different places throughout the day.. My favorite was when someone from TWC was nearly blowing away on a beach.. May have been Nassau.
Their extreme reporting is almost comical.

What a freaking nightmare situation.... Hours before the storm hits people who made no preparations and who apparently have no plan and no skills to be able to protect themselves and their families are waiting in long lines at a hotel convenience store. The social/cultural implications of that are just terrifying.

I can have compassion for clueless tourists who haven't been watching the news and who live in non-hurricane areas like Great Britain, Saskatchewan, Michigan, Germany, etc. But I can't muster much compassion for tourists who live in the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic and have ignored the news while they chose to visit Florida during hurricane season.

And at what point does WDW management shut down these shops and restaurants to send the local CM's home to safety and their families and let these clueless tourists fend for themselves and fight over a can of soup?

I would hope by 6:00pm Eastern that all of WDW's facilities were closed, including hotel lobby gift shops, to send the CM's home to safety.
Don't be so over paranoid and over reacting to this. Yes, I understand people who live there should be prepared but these are tourist. Idk about you but when Im in WDW I tend to tune the outside world out (except for college football I admit), I even skipped watching the Super Bowl this past year on my trip so no I don't expect everyone to be glued to their TV or phones to get up to the minute updates.

As far as CMs go im positive they have staff on hand that will be staying to ride out the storm at WDW so I would say it's safe to assume which ever CMs that are running those shops won't be leaving anytime soon to go home.

I've dealt with Hurricanes my entire life and have only evacuated once and it was a total waste of time.

Apparently you haven't read the early comical content about when Jim Cantore shows up, lol.

I don't see the reporting comical, it's very eye-opening with all the raw footage and it's meant to inform people to keep people safe.
