Hurricane Matthew

My aunt was supposed to stay at the bungalows in poly!!! She racked up her points for this once in a lifetime experience. She was supposed to stay Fri-tuesday. Her flight from NY was cancelled so they decided to fly into Atlanta today and attack the storm and drive to disney from there. I'm unsure of where they will put her instead . She at least found a way to get there and has experienced disney before. My heart breaks for all the first timers whos trips are ruined.

I feel at the resorts it did bring people together. Everyone seemed even friendlier and more cordial than usual. We waited in line for 2 hours for food Thursday and I didn't witness one nasty guest. It was not a miserable experience. It's my opinion that it's just some people on these boards are being that way.

Everyone we saw was very cordial and helpful to one another, holding places for people in food lines so they could get their kids to the bathroom, reassuring those who aren't familiar with hurricanes and were scared... didn't witness a single guest meltdown Thursday which was great. CMs at the register were apologizing for the waits and everyone was telling them not to worry about it. Everyone very much seemed to be making the best out of a bad situation.

Exactly! That's what we witnessed too. And the cast members were great!

Glad to hear this from someone who was actually there and knows exactly how it was rather than someone thousands of miles away and assuming and getting the internet all riled up. Thanks for posting.

Matthew has been downgraded to a Category 1 with sustained winds of 85 mph. Let's hope the treats South Carolina kindly. Or better yet, spins out into the Atlantic and disappears, never ever to return. And that goes for the rest of the list.

Because I'm going to be at WDW in 13 days for MNSSHP! Actually, we're going to Uni, but my son-in-law loves Halloween - it's his favorite holiday (well, duh, you get to dress up and people give you CANDY!) - so the trip over to Disney will be a surprise. We've told him we're doing Halloween Horror Nights, so he will bring his costume. Won't he be surprised when we get in the car, instead of taking to boat to Universal. :)

Now that Matthew has past I'm hoping that guests who huddled in their resorts look back on their vacation as memorable. Maybe they won't look fondly on actually waiting it out in their room But they can say "I survived Matthew at Disney!" with a wink. They probably had power. Maybe not the best box lunch (WDW should eat that cost as a necessary provision to guests in an emergency), endured putting up with family members in close quarters, were inconvenienced in their schedule, and just made do as best as possible at their resort in whatever manner that entailed.

Welcome to the club of anyone who rode out a hurricane and gets cabin fever. But they had a roof over their head at a Disney resort being looked after by Cast Members in the middle of a hurricane.

Disney Springs opened last night and parks are now open. Enjoy!

She should be able to check into a bungalow now. They were empty during the storm and it's past.

That's what I love to hear! This is what brings a smile to my face. We need more of these great first hand accounts instead of the arm-chair analysts. People need to make the best of a bad situation rather than try to pick out every small detail and complain about It.

Anyone know anything about Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort or Vero Beach Resort? I know that Hilton Head is getting pounded and flooded a great deal right now. According to Disney's website, the resort is closed.

I have been there, and it is a beautiful resort, but I remember it had a swamp in the background of it, and it was on an interior section of the island (along an interior waterway and swamp). I assume that the whole island was evacuated, but I am not sure. I know that it is currently being pummeled, as it its neighbor, Parris Island (Marine Corps base). I think that this area overall is getting hit a lot worse than Florida was. Any reports from anyone there?

I have never been to Vero Beach, Disney's Vero Beach Resort is showing closed also, but to reopen Monday.

I was able to get out an survey the damage this morning.

The worst thing we have is I lost about half a dozen shingles. We never lost power save for about a dozen 2-3 second lapses that our battery backups handled.

Everything else can be solved by picking up a few small branches and mowing the lawn.

A few of my neighbors lost larger sections of shingles, some sofit and fence panels. It looks like we have one decent size tree down in the subdivision behind us.

All in all, not too bad. It could have been much, much worse.

Good to hear. Hopefully all of those being hammered by rain will fare as well as you have.

We were lucky. We live in a relatively newer neighborhood with solid electric service and great drainage.

Many were not so fortunate. There was widespread flooding in the areas of town and power is just getting turned back on in a lot of areas.

Up here in central North Carolina we have been getting flash flooding warnings all morning long. It has been steady rain with almost no let up all morning so far. It is about what we expected here. The winds are brisk, but, I wouldn't call them overly damaging, just gusty and it's driving in from the North. Hardly ever see that around here. Anyway, if it doesn't get any worse then this we should be OK.

I can imagine there will be far more bad stories than good. Not many places can take 10+ inches of rain in a couple days without severe flooding.
