Additional Maps/Info can be found at the back of the Main Ivan thread. This info just needs to be disemminated quickly.

Winds 160 sustained / Pressure 916mb as of 5 AM AST.

Not to be alarmist, but this is stronger than Andrew was.

Please check www.weather.com and www.nhc.noaa.gov for more detailed info.

My mother was taken hostage on Grenada when she was in medical school there, and she still has the news footage.

Anyway, I really hope it misses Florida. What kind of God would allow 3 hurricanes to hit Florida in 3 weeks? At least it's a small one...

OMG! I remember when that happened...

Another hurricane would be too cruel, but unfortunately the weather guys think this is the wave of the future...multiple hurricanes in rapid succession. :(

I'm really about the weather this coming winter will bring to the north.

Ivan is a VERY bad boy at the moment and could get even stronger, they say. However, we won't have a clear idea of whether he has Florida in his sights until around Saturday or Sunday.

Really?

When is it set to hit? Tomorrow?

Hmmm.... well, in the mean time, let's all completely freak out, do nothing more than sit in front of the television news non-stop and stock up on all your water and batteries. I'd love to know what isn't "alarmist" about this post. Everyone can read the graphic that is already on that thread.

Oh, and don't forget to tape your windows.

They don't think that Ivan will hold at a cat 5 or even a 4 when by the time it gets up towards the Gulf. They said conditions aren't favorable for it to hold that tyep strength. It's just that where it is now, has those favorable conditions.

Some models are putting Ivan at the center Gulf, some across Fl., some on into the Atlantic up to New Jersey. It's just too early to tell where he's going. Hopefully he'll miss all of us (Alabama here  ). Especially Fl.

I think Dave was just trying to let everyone know how bad this storm has gotten. It has trashed Grenada and there is a solid chance of it coming into the Miami area. Yes, we need to wait a couple days before getting worried, but it's something everyone should keep an eye on. That's all.

But see, that's just the thing - people already ARE keeping an eye on this.

And like Atta83 said in the other thread (the one that makes this thread obsolete, btw) - it's all in how it is phrased.

Using phrases like "not to alarm anyone" - well hello, saying something like that AUTOMATICALLY will alarm someone. Or "stronger than Andrew" triggers a sense memory for everyone who had to live through Andrew.

This is an "alarmist" post. Trust me, everyone in Florida by this point is watching the news most likely non-stop to see when another massive storm will come around and threaten their way of living again. No one needs a post - everyone already knows. All more attention with trigger phrases like "SUSTAINED WINDS 160 MPH" (not mentioning that this is while it is still out to sea and HOW far away from Florida again?) will only panic people.

Basically - be afraid of the news. Be VERY VERY afraid!

Perhaps it will take the turn into the Atlantic and miss the panhandle all together. I don't know how much more you guys can take down there. Godspeed!

This storm has grown quickly and there is a chance that it will make landfall in FL or other coastal state. So, there is a need to be vigilent.

Source?
(note - CREDIBLE source)

ps - big diff. between vigilent (getting suplies set aside, charging batteries, etc.) and panic (two threads for pretty much the same thing with all sorts of media buzz words littered around, fleeing the state, etc.).

All news / weather sources are showing this to now be a Category 5 storm and all sources are showing a CHANCE of landfall in the U.S.

With the number of users in this forum that live in FL, two threads about a major hurricane is not a big deal. I believe someone in the other thread stated that if you don't want to read them, don't. For those that want the information, they can read and post as they see fit. I don't believe these threads can be seen as "PANIC".

Yes, but all those same people were saying the exact same thing about how terrorizing Frances was going to be too.

And for every "CHANCE" that it will make landfall, isn't there another "CHANCE" that it won't?

Basically what I've been trying to say is that no one REALLY knows. At this point, I firmly believe that all of those weather sources really don't know what's going on and they are putting out what is basically worst case scenarios so that no one is caught of guard because the effed up so bad with Charley.

This in turn terrorizes people.

No, there isn't a problem with two threads and I surely don't have a problem with reading them - I just want people to NOT panic. Often times, people don't think too clearly when they panic. When people don't think clearly, people get hurt even worse than they would have otherwise. If you don't like my posts, don't read them.

My problem has been (and still is) with these two threads is the amount of unsubstantiated fear pumped into the phrasing of the "CAT 5" thread. Look at how many media terrorist buzz words are in there. But I've already gone over that, and won't again.

My problem isn't with the threads, it's with ignorant panic and those who propagate it.

If you already know all this why are you reading/posting on this thread?

F.Y.I. Tourists and mobile home residents in the Florida Keys have been asked to evacuate, and for weird_inside I saw this on FOXNews and The weather channel, just want you to have my credible source.
