Hurricane Irma

I've been keeping an eye on cams the past few hours. Both cams at the Southernmost Beach Resort are down now and the cam at Two Friends Restaurant on Duval street appears to show that the power has gone out. This is all with the eye being more than 75 miles out from the Keys still

EDIT: power just came back on on the Duval Street cam, doubt it will last though

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I really hope no resources are wasted or others' lives lost trying to save people who thought it would be smart to ride out a hurricane in a boat.

I agree. I feel horrible for any who die, but it was basically suicide to stay on a boat.

And seriously, if I was the wife of one of the policemen who stayed behind and whoever else is working at the last minute last resort shelter.. I'd be furious as well.
Residents and tourists had multiple days to get out.. but they've put more lives at risk by choosing to stay.

Stormchasers have been saying that several people chose to ride out the storm on their boats.

I don't see any possible way that those people will survive.
I wonder if they chose to ride out storm in their boats after drinking everything they could find.

Contemporary is different too
image.jpg

Was told wave would be buffet on the 9th and that both wave and cali grill would be open during the evenings with full menus. Additionally, Quick service location is going to be running.

Essentially, business as usual here.
Will update as it changes. I will also add that when they extended my stay they discounted the rate to $190ish per night. Again- zero complaints. I'd choose the contemporary for any future hurricane.
Between the management and the building itself, I don't know if it can be topped.
And that bulletin only applies to the main tower, right?

The scary thing is once Irma pulls away from Cuba it's going to go back to a CAT 4 before it hits Key west. and Tampa is going to get hammered.

EDIT - looks like the last CAM is down in Key west.

If you've never been to Tallahassee, despite this being the capital city, the local news coverage is approximately what you'd expect from a middle school production.

The ABC affiliate couldn't even bother to have their head meteorologist show up for the broadcast tonight. I swear, you can't make this stuff up.

This place is wildly unprepared for a possible direct hit of a Cat 1-3.

You would be surprised.

I knew a guy who has been floating around on boats since the Vietnam war. Something snapped in his mind. He has had 3 boats sunk under him because of hurricanes. 2 in the Bahamas. That was the last time I talked to him, the number may have gone up. Sail boats BTW.

First problem is there are many boat people who are just poor and have no where to go. The guy I was talking about would come into town stay in a marina working odd jobs till he could make repairs on his boat, buy supplies and have some cash to sail away. That was his life for 30 -40 years, he's not going to change now. Also he knew what to do, about where to anchor a boat to ride out a storm etc. These boat people aren't city people out for a little boat ride many have a lot of experience. A hurricane is very survivable on a boat. The bigger the better.

I don't know why these people wouldn't have just pointed their boats towards the Cayman Island and started sail in that direction? That's what I would have done. They could have easily got a 5 day head start, enough to be clear of the hurricane.

The boat on the camera earlier wasn't old, so I don't know what that one was out. But a lot of people have older boats or sailboats that either don't run, or wouldn't trust them to sail very far.. it's too shallow and too much land in too many places in that area. I will be utterly shocked if anyone on a boat lives thru this storm. In complete disbelief actually.

So apparently residents of Miami are crying foul saying they could have stayed home

And if they stayed, storm hit directly and lots of people died, they'd cry "why didn't you try to get us out". There's a 100% chance of never pleasing everybody. This thing is big, bad and getting worse. It's interaction with Cuba did little to weaken it and it's getting stronger again.
The warnings are out that you're on your own in certain areas already and this thing is barely off the coast of Cuba...
