Hurricane Irma

You are crazy. That's like saying i can't get into Chicago on new years because of a blizzard and the airport is shut down. When you travel to Florida between September and October you know this is hurricane season. The same applies for cruises. They are cheaper during this period because its hurricane season.

While vacations are ruined that is the risk you take.

Id still be upset. Can't a man be upset? I get all that stuff about risk ect.. I would just be upset.

PS, I go to FL for 2 weeks in Oct every year for the past 17 years. 0 hurricanes for me so far. Praying to the Tiki gods has been working.

A lot of people on twitter are essentially upset that they evacuated Miami when the current trajectory seems to keep miami relatively much safer than before. It's silly and I don't understand it but it is happening!

As someone living up in Tallahassee, I'm glad they aren't in the bullseye. But not happy seeing we'll get slammed.

Since the height of the season is August and September, you're probably in the clear. But there have been storms as late as November. I was unfortunate to live through one.

For those who think Dade & Broward will be okay (those twits,on Twitter), there are multiple water spouts off Lauderdale. Hope they don't come ashore.

Saw report that once Irma flattens the Keys, she'll come ashore on the mainland at Sarasota.

Yeah, the Tor:Con meter is an 8 of 10 for tomorrow for East Central Florida...

What? A good portion of that area Dade/Broward doesn't have power, there's been flooding, and strong wing... and expecting a large storm surge. Who is complaining? I can say for certain that none of my SoFla friends are saying such things.

The ONLY counties not under either a hurricane or tropical storm warning are Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Escambia. That's how big this thing is.

On social media, probably

All over Twitter. The problem is that people of Miami were evacuated and many came to Tampa. So to leave one red zone to another red zone they are calling foul.

My only issue is that the news blows hurricanes severely out of proportion. Now in no way am i saying this or any other hurricane is not serious. But watching twc and all these other stations with their live reporting all becomes a story for a local Emmy.

Leave it up to these news stations, Florida was going to cease to exist come Monday yet the weather casters are all in the middle of it.

Latest updates are showing Tornado watches being extended further north into central Florida. Since we are on the front right side of forward motion, there is a risk of tornadoes thru early tomorrow.

Also, curfews will be in effect in many central Florida counties from 7PM tonight.

Also, for those thinking we’re off the hook here, keep in mind that hurricane Charlie was on a very similar up the west coast track in 2004. And then at 11AM it suddenly changed course and came directly over the top of Orlando 9 hours later. These storm can, and do change direction so you never take down your guard until after it’s over.

Just finished reading through this thread. The information provided by members of this site never ceases to amaze me, even for the non-Disney things. As an outsider keeping an eye on this one, all I can say is I hope everyone here stays safe. I plan on arriving in 2 weeks time for the first time in over a decade (been busy checking off the other resorts ;) ) and hope to see everything intact and more importantly, people in good health. All the best to everyone going through this, you're in my thoughts!

My biggest concern is for the safety of those who stayed in areas of predicted storm surges. Having witnessed the destructive power first hand in hurricane Hugo you can not imagine. Down the street from my house there was house sitting in the middle of the road. My friends brick house completely gone not a trace. Shrimp boats washed into the middle of town. My only hope is the predicted 10 -15' storm surges on the west coast won't happen. For those that may complain we didn't need to evacuate --you can't 100% predict where any storms will go. Hugo was not supposed to hit us but at the last minute it strenghtened and changed direction, thank god we left at the last minute. We have friends that stayed, the storm surge came up through the floors in the windows lucky they have a 2 story house, one story house on a slab where do you go. Stay safe

A major hurricane is about to hit the Keys for the first time in many years. I think the discussion has been focused more on that because the storm isn't near Orlando yet.

Once it passes thru the South, and makes her way up the coast, then I'm sure the discussion will focus on WDW.
Florida is more than Disney, and Florida tourism is a lot more than just Disney World.

The Keys are home to the only living coral reef on our continent, and one of the most popular dive sites in the world. There is so much history, marine, and wildlife in that part of the country.. and people who make their living from small businesses surrounding those things and serving tourists, not huge corporations focused on tourism.

I know this is a Disney site, and I wish the best for WDW, but I think/hope it should/would be ok to acknowledge the seriousness of this storm in places other than Orlando.
No one is saying that the storm is all about Disney, but as you said, this is a Disney world site....
