Well, they are Keys locals...

Hardy folk, and I love 'em. But they live there for a reason.

Stupid Conchs. They're probably the only ones who stayed.lol Those who have been there less than 50 years hopefully left.

I have been checking all the keys web cam and they have looked like that all day. I know people matter more but I feel sick for the Key deer.

Me too. I kept thinking that there would some kind of capture/transport or shelter somehow.. but I haven't seen or heard anything about it. :(

Leaving for WDW on Tues. As of now how would you guys say my trip is looking?

Driving? Flying in? Depending upon what track the storm takes, you might have problems getting there, especially if there's damage at the airport. Just monitor the news - I'm sure if Disney gets smacked, it will be national news. And the airport's website will let you know the status of operations. Hopefully, if things aren't too bad in the Orlando area, Disney will be up and running by the time you arrive or shortly thereafter.

I was hoping as well that they would "capture" the deer but they have on there website that they are evac everyone and will be back afterward. I just don't see with the storm surge and the contaiminated water after how any survive.

Yeah, wildlife in the Keys are going to take a beating, but they've survived other storms. Quite frankly, the Keys have had a problem with overpopulation of Key deer, so a little herd thinning isn't a bad thing.

But they spent a ton of money changing the roads to protect the deer! And I don't even know the penalty for killing one, but I think it's huge.
They were endangered I thought.

Iguanas are tough though..hopefully they can hang on tight somewhere high.

I am A OK with every and any Python being wiped out of the Everglades. Even several Gators and Crocs.
Everything else needs to stay.

If Irma makes the Key Deer extinct, but leaves the pythons.. she's an absolute bic.

You do know the American crocodile isn't found in the Everglades. They prefer brackish water with a higher salinity than the Everglades. You will find them along coastal waters. Gators (not the UF variety) are essential to the health of the Everglades.

At one point, they were creating problems because of overpopulation. That's what happens when habitat encroachment reduces the large predators, like the panther. I'm more concerned about their viability than Key deer. I believe there are fewer than 100 panthers left. They aren't going to survive much longer with a population that size. Even with the introduction of panthers from another part of the country to improve the gene pool since a population that small is prone to interbreeding.
