Hurricane Irma

They're fine. To make a long story short, the generator at the house across the street exploded. The house went down in flames. No one was home, fortunately. All surrounding houses are okay. Other than my folks getting rattled like you know what, they're okay.

Oh, (words I can't post), that bites. Officials are warning people all the time about using portable generators, like, DON'T LEAVE THEM RUNNING UNATTENDED! Glad no one was injured or killed, but you just burned down your house that survived Irma.... Your poor parents. Glad to hear they are okay, other than their obviously shot nerves.

I hope he's wrong too. For two years in a row I've had a WDW trip planned after a hurricane. Last year, I drove down when I still had no power. This year, I'm driving down this Saturday as planned.

I had Hermine last year, but that was nothing. Just a few Tornado warnings and a lot of rain... Nothing major. Would rather not have a major hurricane...

It wasn't their house, though, fortunately. I had a bad cell connection when I spoke with them. Near as I can tell the generator was stored in the garage across the street. I guess gas was leaking from it and interacted with the water heater. Boom!

Latest update from Monroe County (from an hour ago) said that the National Guard has arrived.. also military bridge inspectors.
The Navy is sending an aircraft carrier with supplies, as well as 3 more ships.

Water and electricity is still out for 100% of the county, and Cell Service continues to be unavailable for almost all of the lower keys.
My parents are making their way back to Ft Myers. They are still without power but pictures from neighbors looks like the house is ok. Lots of tree and screen damage. Still no word on what my brother's apartment is looking like in Miami.

I think after all the wind and flooding, if I heard that, I'd probably have dropped dead of a heart attack.

Plan your trips after November if you want to eliminate your hurricane chances.lol

I've always enjoyed going around this time of the year. It tends to be rather quiet, and it's the first couple of weeks after the UK kids go back to school, so it's cheap!

I know hurricanes are at their peak during this timeframe, but you've always got to take the chance and just hope for the best. Thankfully I'm flexible, so I'm able to move things around if need be...

Just make sure to purchase travel insurance

Oh that's great! hopefully you'll get the same good news from your brother.

If anyone has missing people- the Coast Guard has a hotline. My friend called it, a live person answered on the third ring!

I've now gone through my 4th. I'd forgotten about that hurricane that brushed Miami a few months after we moved there in 1966. Kate in 1985, Hermine last year and now Irma. We were prepared in Miami (dad was an engineer), not at all prepared for Kate, not as prepared for Hermine and other than not enough D batteries, over prepared for Irma. But I was, based on forecasts, expecting the worst - no power for weeks and possible lack of water and a damaged home. Especially after she seemed to turn to make a beeline for Tallahassee - and all our trees.

Breathed a sigh of relieve Sunday evening.
