Hurricane Ian expected to impact Florida (updates and related discussions)

Also, remember most deaths in hurricanes and most damage caused by them comes from flooding. This is usually mainly due to storm surge but when a hurricane gets huge and then stalls, no where in its path is safe. It’s the reason I delayed and am currently worried I’ll need to cancel. Florida is extremely low lying and is at the end of its wet season which means the ground is already saturated. I sincerely hope for everyone there 3 very important things are wrong about the forecast:

1. It stays father out to sea and doesn’t hug the coast like it’s forecasted to, that will lower surge and keep the heaviest rain bands in the gulf
2. It does not stall for 48 hours near to Florida
3. The trend of it weakening on approach holds and is strengthened.

I’m not trying to hype this but this storm has the potential to live In infamy like Katrina if the track holds and the Tampa Bay Area is in the greatest danger.
Are you still trying to go to WDW on Friday 30th?

My family is supposed to fly in that day and stay a week but I'm wondering if we should just avoid FL entirely at this point?

Not looking good for WDW shifted to the right a little which puts WDW on the worst side ---the right. I would imagine flights into Orlando will be cancelled on Friday, looks to be a major hurricane off Tampa cat 3 wind speeds between 111 and 129 mph.

At the moment, but I wouldn’t be suprised if I have to cancel. It’s all going to depend on how long this thing sticks around and how devestated Orlando is.

I’m supposed to be flying out on Wednesday like I had said.. yesterday I called Disney and tried to push my vacation back a few days but the change of flight was $800 because they haven’t issued any statements about any danger yet

Not on Friday, that Wed-Thur. Hurricane will be more north and downgrading to a TS on Friday per latest forecast.

DezyGirlSD I don’t see how this situation is funny. Losing a vacation stinks, but it’s trivial compared to what is going to happen to a lot of Floridians this week. Again, things can change, but currently this is going to be a historic storm that is going to severely damage a large swath of the Gulf coast, and potentially inland areas. I feel horrible for anyone down there.

So will the Halloween party still go during a "tropical storm"?
Depends on way too many things, I’m also prepared for the parks to not be open Fri and reopen Saturday. It’s just if I have to bump another day, the trip starts getting too short for me and I rather go somewhere else instead.

Hope you are right NOAA map shows it off Tampa cat 3 on Thursday 2 am which is 65 miles from WDW appears to not be down graded
2 am Friday as a hurricane thats 24 hours can do a lot of damage . If it were me I'd be cancelling

Chalk up another cancellation... I was supposed to fly down tomorrow but decided to postpone my trip to next March. At least by shifting my visit I didn't lose the deposit I would have if I had cancelled the first night at Pop.

Hey, maybe Tron will be open by then (maybe there's an outside chance?).

Best of luck to those who are still in the path of this thing. Still a chance it will miss Orlando.

The forecast can still change on timing, all of my reservations can be canceled very easily. Got 48 hours before I need to think about it.

The current forecast is Ian is going to sit just off the coast and spin from Wed-Fri am. Not many planes will be flying in that kind of dangerous weather.
Yup I know, but things have remained very fluid and Friday is still 4-5 days out. 4-5 days ago, this thing was supposed to be out over the open Atlantic on Friday.

It’s going to be off the coast near Tampa on Wed. Thur-Fri is still the extended forecast and can change. That’s how weather forecasts work.

Fri is just my line in the sand, if I’m not there and the parks aren’t open by Saturday morning it’s no longer worth it to do the trip.

I don’t think anyone thinks it’s “funny”…but people use levity as a grounding/coping mechanism.
It’s a worry for some and disappointing for others.
This is the deal in Florida, however. Considering how much more severe the weather has become in recent years, it’s almost surprising they don’t get hit more. I think their last hit was in 2018?…and they haven’t had a real big one for along time.
There are tradeoffs everywhere you choose to live.
So will the Halloween party still go during a "tropical storm"?
There’s absolutely no reason you’d want it to…
