Housekeeping door knocking at 8am on check-out days - what's going on?

There seems to be a recent practice of knocking on guest room doors a couple of hours before check-out time.

Seeing more and more of this on social media.

As a result of COVID, there is a shortage of housekeeping.

Also as result of COVID, folks are finally taking that WDW vacation they have been putting off for two years; fewer workers must turn around even more rooms each then when they were fully staffed, they can’t wait for the normal check out time.

When in doubt, blame it on COVID. It always works..

There does seem to be a really simple solution but I think Disney are too ignorant to implement it.
Don’t knock on a door before 11am if the room occupied sign is present on the handle.

Disney are concerned about security so want daily checks on rooms even if the room occupied sign is present, which is OK, but that should take place after 11am when people are likely to be awake (although some do like to nap in the afternoon, but I imangine those people are up and out much before 11am).

Simple solution
Room occupied sign - do not knock unless sign still present after 11am when the security check should be done or room cleared if it’s check out day. If sign present all day assume guest doesn’t want housekeeping (if it’s not check out day).
No room occupied sign, knock at any time after 7am. No one should knock before then except in an emergency as likely people are sleeping.

Except that this policy started long before Covid.

The room checks started right after the LV shooting. It's a good time to ask for more towels or coffee, lol.

On our last few DVC trips we've been able to check-in early. One at 8:30a (the day we flew in, got text just as we landed) and 10:30a (second part of that split stay) back in Jan '21. In Sept '21 our room ready was sent just after 11am. I can see why people could get upset at multiple knocks hours before checkout, but Mousekeeping doesn't bother us if they pop in early because we are either gone already, packing or out making one last short ropedrop.

There are quite a few people with similar tweets. I don't see any reason to doubt what they've shared.
I don’t doubt housekeepers are checking to see if the rooms are cleared, that’s happened to me a couple times and I’ve just told them what time we think we will be out and that’s that. I’m referencing that tweet where the guest claims the HK was yelling at her at 830 am “it’s time to check out!”, I don’t believe it quite happened like that.

Those early check ins were probably because the room wasn't used/rented the night before. You can usually tell. The air seems stale since the sensors on the thermostat had nothing to sense. You also don't smell any cleaning fumes.

I am not even sure that housekeeping is even in the building that early. I surely don't seem them in the hall that early. Maybe that are back stage loading their carts with supplies.

Early check ins are some families getting off the red eye flying from Europe or the West Coast and arriving at MCO at approx 6 am. It is a good feeling when their hotel room is ready in the early morning . I know when I fly the red eye and arrive at my destination city, it is nice to check in early and even better when I do not get charged for an early check in.

The deadbolt on the door will also prevent housekeeping from entering with their card since it requires a physical key to unlock. Only a few people in the resort have such a key.

(Though admittedly there are some situations where it's not feasible to engage the deadbolt, like if some are leaving the room and others are still sleeping, or there are still people out who will need to be able to get back in)

Housekeepers breaking into rooms was not a thing when the security checks started and it's not a thing now. What does a hotel door stop or a deadbolt have to do with housekeepers knocking on the door early on checkout day?

Yeah the early check-ins were probably due to our 'great' timing during Covid peaks, lol, and the rooms were already empty that morning. But getting those early checkins makes me feel better about ever getting disturbed with the housekeeping knocks on check out day.

Well, a couple times in the past, on check out day, we have had housekeeping opening the door while knocking at the same time.

Had the top lock engaged, the door still opens a couple inches.
