We already knew this but further confirmation from that the current expansion including Moana, ant man, iron man, COMD and arendelle only cost around 5 billion leaving another 5 billion as of yet unspent

It’s still a little unclear how closely the original plans have to be followed (for example we still have no concrete proof whether they were freely allowed to change wandering oaks to the coaster or if that change was allowed under the guise of the “2021 reimagined attraction” that never materialised) but that does leave the park with 5 billion HKD (about 630 million USD) to use on quinjet or whatever LegCo let’s them do, the announcement may come on the 22nd

Do you think the land will open before the app updates, it’s such a small thing but I love the Disney apps, I can’t wait to see arendelle on the Hong kong app and all the space it adds, I was furiously clicking on the app for days around the COMD appearing finished

On a different note do you think the 22nd of may they will announce what they intend to do with that remaining 5 billion or is that something more for D23

Given that the lot where Autopia was has been sitting empty for years, and the fact that the HK Government already allocated money for whatever they plan on using the space for, leads me to believe that they’ll probably announce something on Monday.

That’s what I’m thinking, they can’t hide behind arendelle anymore since it’s functionally finished and has an opening date

but DLR has moved back to Disney forward and away from DCA 2.0 and DLP can still hide behind arendelle for another year so if LegCo has given up on quinjet this will be the first we will hear of it, I just don’t know if this is the event that will happen or if it will just be a “yeah park is going great with local guests, international tourism is still recovering so we are running at a loss, arendelle opens November okay good chat” or if LegCo will actually demand meaningful updates

I know it’s a long shot but I’m hoping we get some news about expansions beyond Quinjet or whatever is supposed to go in that vacant lot in Tomorrowland. My hope is that they set aside some of the money for another ride in Fantasyland (probably not gonna happen given that Frozen is right behind it, but one can dream) or maybe something in Adventureland or even Toy Story Mania. Like I said, probably not gonna happen, but if they’re going to discuss ways of allocating the money, they could potentially talk about other future things too.

I’d be happy if they discussed anything tbh, like I said I’m not sure if they will even discuss what they are going to do with the current 5 billion (it could just be a progress report up to arendelle unless someone has analysed multiple of these and has it on good authority it won’t be like that)

I don’t know if quinjet is still on the books but regardless HK needs one more mega e ticket to compliment mystic manor with that 5 billion and I’d actually prefer if it was entirely unique to HK

one good thing about further expansions is HK and SDL are so different but both Chinese they likely won’t expand one without the other so in the short term HK can piggy back off Shanghai’s success, though I doubt HK will need much more help considering with arendelle and one mega e ticket it will put it tightly even with the rest of the non China castle parks by ride number

So weird to think the newest of the 3 new lands is a decade old, that part of the park still feels so much like the “new part” even if they have opened more since they built that part

Some small-scale Duffy and Friends attractions have been proposed too (a little bus-bar dark ride, a permanent interactive walkthrough in Main Street similar to Toontown's, etc.). I just don't get why asian disney fans are so enamoured of those creepy characters (except Gelatoni).
Because cuteness is very popular over there. You must be very unfamilar with the "Kawaii Culture" that's become part of Japanese culture since the 1970s but has slowly started spreading to other parts of Asia (such as South Korea and Taiwan). Even parts of Europe has similar treatment when it comes to cuteness compared to The West (especially The United States) but has started becoming more acceptable beinning in the 2010s. Also I never found Duffy and his Friends ugly.

Okay I found the recording of the event and watched the part I missed

So functionally there is no update, frozen is opening in November, Hollywood hotel in June and the Walt statue in October, the Disney liaison dodged around the question of marvel and LegCo didn’t press him on it

Overall the meeting basically amounted to “we appreciate everything Disney is trying to bring to Hong Kong but it’s becoming a problem you still can’t show us a meaningful direction towards profit in the projectable future” (though since this is the first time I’ve watched anything with LegCo this might just be how they act, they seemed very blasé about potentially closing ocean park as a means of directing tourism towards Disney during the presentation so I don’t know if that means they actually view Disney really positively or they are just “mean” overall)

After the initial question the expansion didn’t come up again and the 5 billion figure was never directly mentioned

Sorry to kinda dump this thread with my own replies but I’ll just draw attention to it individually here, during the update on HDKL by LegCo they were very open and honest about the idea of closing ocean park, idk if this was hypothetical and I know it’s hard to translate intention since the members were speaking either mandarin or Cantonese but to me they seemed to like what Disney is doing and offering much more than ocean park (deferring of royalties community outreach and not laying off any cast member during Covid were applauded by the members multiple times) and were open to the idea of closing ocean park and deferring it’s funding towards Disney

They obviously understood that Disney was a net positive for the city and for most of its operation would be operating at a profit if not for royalties so they seemed mostly positive even if they were drilling the liaison hard
