Help me choose a gaming console.

Over the last year I have been attempting to build a new gaming PC but every time I get the estimated $2000 in the bank something happens that sucks my savings account nearly dry. Right now I am on the edge of conceding defeat and I am considering the switch over to the slightly more affordable arena of console gaming.

My conundrum is of course which system do I choose the Xbox 360 or the PS3? I have read over scores of reviews and while I am slightly leaning toward the PS3 I am not leaning far enough to make it a clear choice.

If anyone out there can offer some advice I would greatly appreciate it, especially if you have made the switch from PC to console gaming like I am about to do.

Others will be much more knowledgeable on the subject than me, but I personally chose the 360.
I have to admit the main draw of it was the halo series but other factors were involved. I believe the online aspect of the xbox is far superior and this was something i was looking for. Also, the games seem generally more appealing. There are very few PS3 exclusive titles that I would be interested in, whereas 360 had many.

Another thing for you to consider would be that the 360 is Microsoft. So many of the PC games could potentially be released on the xbox.

There are 2 things that are kind of pushing me away from the 360 and toward the PS3. The first was all the technical issues with the 360 at release and the lack of an integrated HD-DVD player. The first issue I believe has been pretty much solved with the new processor heat sink and the switch over to a 65nm processor and new motherboard but the HD-DVD issue is still appears to be a ways off. From what I hear Toshiba and MS are now in the development stage of a 360 that will have a fully integrated HD-DVD player but they have no idea when it will be released.

I would choose PS3 solely so you can play Kingdom Hearts!
Unless of course you already have PS2.
I have no existing games. The last console I purchased was a Nintendo in 1989. Needless to say I have been out of the console gaming arena for quite some time.

Well... should any Star Wars games come out or already exist for the Wii, you could see some very interactive light-saber action with that system.

The force unleashed will be released for the Wii with a light saber duel mode. I really like the Wii especially the game play with the interactive controls but the lack of 1080 resolution kills it for me. I have gotten so use to running games high res on a PC that it is really hard to take a step back. The only reason I am even considering going to a console is that they are now in HD.

The Wii is in a different class.

XBox and PS3 are great for single player games...but the Wii is MUCH better for "party" type games.

I think I'd take the 360 over the PS3 (I currently have a Wii). I can't justify spending that much money on a console. (Sure, it's a BluRay player too...but not a good one...so you're getting, basically, a BluRay player with no options...and a console...)

I would go for the PS3 it's still quite a bit of $ but it's ready to go with Blue Ray and the graphics seem just a tad better than the 360 but for me it really comes down to the titles offered for the console. Even though the number of titles aren't necessarily big just yet it keeps getting better every week and Sony isn't going to slow down game releases as they sell consoles! I just saw that the new Ratchet and Clank is out this week, wish I had a PS3 as i really like that franchise. May have to upgrade from my PS2 sooner than my wallet wants?

Wii! I like it for party games and some of the other games due to the interactiveness of the remote with the game it add's another dimension. Also cheap $ considering but it's a secondary system not a main one IMO. I do play it quite a bit and enjoy the games I have for it.

For what it is worth from a family that seems to be obsessed with video games almost as much as we are WDW! :hammer:DS 13, the authority I guess, likes the XBox 360. We don't yet have the PS3 because we went with the Wii, which is great and I know that all of us are hoping for a Star Wars game for it. (He played both and still says he likes 360)
(we have every other console and portable all the way back to the original nintendo, again.... :hammer::hammer:)
I am old school, I guess, and like the older arcade games in our gameroom better than any of the consoles but then again I am a Pac-Man/ Mario/ Donkey Kong lover so I don't think I count. Go with DS ... :ROFLOL:

Funny that the last console that you bought was a Nintendo.

I have an Atari 2600 plugged in beside me right now. I also have a Stelladaptor plugged into the PC which you can plug a 2600 joystick into. They have ROMs that you can download and play on the PC - even of unreleased games, hacks and homebrews. Yes, people are still making 1K games for the 2600. I know you want a "new" system and I can't help you with that decision, but if you have *any* interest in the classic systems you have got to check out www.atariage.com

Anyone that still has an Atari 2600 and wants to play new games on it needs to check out the homebrews they have on Atari Age. :D

Hey! Lucky you with the Ms.PacMan! woo-hoo! I am a classic gaming geek! If you want I can hook you up with an Atari 2600 and some games. I have 9 consoles and a lot of duplicate games. I don't know what the ebay pricing is right now - I should check the market - I've been buying homebrews for a few years now off Atari Age. Every year they have a free Christmas cart that they give with a $100 purchase so when the Christmas Cart comes out I do my big order. :D If you need help/info let me know!

Thank you! That would be great, you can PM me info if that's okay. With Christmas coming up we are especially looking to add to our gameroom (arcade & older games) We love them! Like I said we are almost as obsessed with gaming as we are WDW! :hammer:

Give me the weekend to do a brief inventory. I have a LOT of 2600 carts and I have to check the label variations to see what is extra. Also not all 2600 consoles are alike. There are 4-switch and 6-switch and and and...

There is a lot to learn. I hate for people to get on ebay and buy something that may not work. Also you have to check on the hook-ups to your TV. Do you have a new-fangled TV or will it accept the old game connector? I have an 80's TV that I have my Atari hooked to. I will PM you some links to some educational information and then I'll take stock of what I have and PM you again.

If you really get into it - the Atari Age forums are indespensible. Unfortuntely it IS a gaming site and there are all kinds of people there - but if you stick to the 2600 section it is worth hanging out there every now and again.

If anyone has any tips on finding a Wii at a decent price please PM me.

Every time a store has one for $249, their very limited supplies disappear in hours.

I see bundled packages for $500++, but thats tooo much for me.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You are much more likely to get an answer here: http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showforum=21

The Atari Age forums also have modern gaming. The content of this site is not moderated as heavily as WDWMagic so careful!
