Have you ever considered...?

I'd love to move to Orlando and have sort of tried to in the past, but it's extremely hard to find available jobs in my field. I live 4 hours from the Magic which certainly isn't bad, but I would love to be right there and have the option to go every weekend of I wanted. Maybe someday.

Also, good luck making a living by moving down here and working for Disney.
Now see, if I were moving down, I'd have to be able to live without working for Disney. If I can't buy a place outright and live on my pensions [I have two now, by then I'll have three], then I wouldn't go.

Once I'm there I might subsidize by working for the Mouse, but I wouldn't want to be dependent on Mickey for my meals, so to speak.

My parents look forward to their winters in Orlando. They are full time RV'ers and spend so many months at a time in one place, then move on. They stay in Florida the longest, from November to May. My mom is a CM and they both love just going to the world whenever they can.

I couldn't live in Florida. I don't do well in high humidity. I really enjoy my two trips a winter to visit them. I would love the ability to spend more time at WDW, but I feel fortunate to be able to go as often as I do and don't wish for what can't be.

I will be a citizen of Florida and an employee of WDW in 2021. I will be retired and it will just be a "FUN" job. My pension and 401k will cover living. The minimum wage pay check I get will just be spending money.

i've often heard from people who used to live there that Orlando was very scary and a huge ghetto....

although i personally would enjoy living somewhere in the central florida area, i'm not too keen on scary ghetto cities...

can anyone who lives nearby confirm/deny?
No....I mean, if you live smack dab in the middle of the city it's a little ghetto, but what city ISN'T? Everywhere outside downtown and Orlando is great.

I don't know if I could. I'm a runner, and I don't think I could be able to run in the 100+ degrees in the summer and then do it on and off in the winter, because it would still be warm.

Other than that, I would probably do it. But all I hear about is the heat, so I really don't know.

I've lived here in Wisconsin my whole life and the humidity in the summer can be OPPRESSIVE!!!! I can't imagine what it must be like in the summer in Florida. (which is why I only go to WDW in the fall...)

I've talked to my husband about someday wintering in FL and then just working part time for the mouse...he just looks at me funny. He likes Wisconsin too much to ever move, even on a part-time basis. I guess I'll just have to "settle" for the yearly vacation.

BTW, sbkline, I agree with you on the special nature of going only occasionally. I don't want my trips to Disney to ever lose their magic!!!! :sohappy:

Moving to the States has been something I've been researching, however within ten minutes of looking, I saw that the US Immigration laws are really strict. Any tips for a foreigner looking for a slice of American Pie? :p

Ya, just go to Mexico and then jump the border into Texas. You're almost certain to get in. No matter how strict you think our immigration laws are, they don't seem to apply to people sneaking in from Mexico. :lookaroun

True, they won't kick you out, but one would have a hard time finding a job that pays a living wage.

I did move to Orlando to be closer to Disney. When I was deciding on colleges during my last year of high school, I knew that I wanted to work for Disney as well. I won't say that it was the deciding factor, but it was one of the factors. I finally decided on UCF in Orlando for several reasons, and I am a proud alumni now. I lived in Orlando for a total of 6 years, worked for the mouse for almost 5 years, but decided to move back home. I now live about 3 hours away (give or take with traffic) and get to visit often. Having friends in Orlando helps, and nothing beats a sponatneous weekend trip.

If your are thinking about making a move - do it for the right reasons. I loved working at WDW, but it took many years to get the "magic" back after I left. Now - I am just as crazy about WDW as I used to be and enjoy it even more!

I would love to do this, but I've also heard that Orlando is not a wonderful area and the pay is lousy. I've lived by Detroit my entire life and the thought of moving to another city that is unsafe makes me nervous.

I've thought about heading to California and working for Disney or just gaining enough work experience to enter a steady position in the World. I'll get there somehow.

I'd absolutely jump at the opportunity to head down to WDW for a College Program...not so sure about actually living there, though.

My real dream--I know, I'm so unique among Disney fans --is to head out to Glendale to work for WDI, provided the atmosphere over there clears up (and I'm not talking about the L.A. smog :lookaroun). WDI is one of the few places I can envision myself working. Problem is, I can't actually envision myself on the West Coast...I'm way to happy with New York!

Life is short. We all know this. If one has such a love for WDW, why not just move to Orlando, get jobs, and make the parks a part of your everyday life? This move would be more ideal to people who don't have kids or kids in school. Just imagine, strolling Epcot after a stressful day. Taking advantage of all the wonderful seasons WDW has to offer. Knowing what you love the most is now your backyard. I'm considering it.

I took a semester off school to do an 8 month college program down there, it was wonderful being able to get off work, then drive over to Epcot for the evening, or take in a fireworks show any night you'd like.

There's a whole lot more to Disney than most people experience, living there gives you time to see everything.

Depends on your line of work/expertise. The pay in DH's field is actually a little bit higher.

Higher compared to where? I have yet to see any job where the pay is higher in Orlando than it is in any decent-sized city.

And for those of you who would like to move to Central Florida and work for the mouse as an hourly employee... I hope you like ramen.

I wasn't referring to hourly pay, and not at WDW, although that might be fun to do for me.

Your idea to move to Orlando and work at WDW is great. I had the same thought 15 years ago. I was tired of the same old job and wanted to do something fun. The only problem is the cost of moving, not making the same money. O.K. money is not everything but I would have taken a hugh cut in pay for the move. Here is my new plan. I will retire from my job in about 9 more years, and plan to work at WDW part-time during the cooler months. I work in the humid south and the summers are really getting me down. WDW in the summer is not for me! Moving to Orlando will be on a monthly basis, (I'll live in my RV) I must come home to my 3 acre homestead (especially during hurricane season) and family. Working for the mouse for 3-4 months will do me just fine.

I think becoming a Cast Member is a more effective weight loss plan than Weight Watchers.
