Sorry if this has been addressed already, but I was just in WDW last month and noticed this...

What was the purpose of adding this? Not only does it spoil the theming, A castmember still comes out saying the usual dialog. Just kinda wondering the point of this.

Accidents can (and do) happen. People crowd too close to the doors, especially if there's not a CM outside to prevent it. It's a little safety mixed in with the overall theme of the attraction. There's worse things to be concerned with.....
Of all the fourteen years I've been going to WDW I've never seen anyone crowd to close to the door. But I guess it only takes one idiot. (sigh)

If it wasn't necessary the first 41 years, why are they all of a sudden? I know why the signs are there, so people don't sue. Duh.

Because 41 years ago, a guest (not an idiot brainless turkey leg snarfer) would say "Ow, well, that was silly of me to stand so close to those doors" - now in 2013 it would be "OW why did you open that door into me, you knew I was there, this is YOUR fault, get me my lawyer"

Or, there could be a move to have these sort of signs across all of the parks where necessary, and they got to the Haunted Mansion earlier than others. The MK did have several days of phased closings last week, so perhaps the crowds outside of the ride became an issue. Not really that big of a deal, it would appear....

Not a big deal to most, probably all. But it did hinder the experience for me... Disney attractions have always been about immersing the audience in the experience. I don't think Haunted Houses in the 1800's had automatic doors.
