Has an Adventureland height balloon test happened?

Burton tends to appeal to Burton fans. The familiar story will bring in non-Burton fans, but I have a feeling they will not care for his flavor.
Agreed. I find it strange Disney continues to use Burton who is so dark and strange and his interpretation of characters are ugly, out of proportion, and detailed in the wrong way - sure, most are incredible works of art and design, but usually don't fit a Disney story. He makes odd re-mixes of Disney classics that do not need re-mixing, they need a steady hand and artistry to let the story breathe on it's own. Disney needs to lose Burton's phone number fast.

They use him because 1. Alice made $1B and 2. Because his fans go to his movies and then buy lots and lots of merchandise. He is king of cult followings.

I wonder what the Dumbo budget will be though...if they size it properly this could be a win/win. If they do a $250M production, then I think it will be a problem.

I along with most of my family love his work. We liked his spin on Alice and Wonka and will most likely enjoy his take on Dumbo as well.

Alice made $1B because it was Alice, Alice 2 bombed because people got a taste of Burton's Alice and said no thanks. I'm not anit-Burton, but just not for Disney films. Gimme Jon Favreau any day.
It still made money though. Production was 170 mil, worldwide gross was just under 300.

I can only imagine what it pulled in merchandising.

I'm a Burton fan, though like others, he's a bit hit or miss for me. When he gets too self-indulgent he loses me. I think that was Alice 2. I was meh on his Wonka. At some point too, Depp basically just plays the same character over and over.

I don't see anyone clamoring for Dumbo though. I think it could work for him but it's probably another Lone Ranger, Pete's Dragon, etc. (I'm just using Disney live action "bombs", I know they aren't Burton) Won't "bomb" but won't be breaking the box office. They really should be focusing elsewhere.

I'm actually not convinced Aladdin or Mermaid will be the massive hit Beauty and the Beast has been either (probably along the lines of Cinderella/Jungle Book, which isn't a diss on them). Lion King will.

Factor in marketing and the fact that theaters get some of that money it did in fact flop. But then you factor in merchandise & DVD/rentals it will eventually make a profit.

The main reason the first did so well was because Alice in wonderland is a massively known IP. Alice 2 flopped was the first wasn't good and then reviews came out that the second was worse. It really has nothing to do with Burton. His style actually helped he first film -- but the story was not there for either.
