Harry Potter mistake? ood for Disney?

Welcome to March :D

I'd hardly call Ghostbusters a classic. Had it not shut in the mid 90s it'd be embarrassing now.

I will miss Jaws. A lot. It was greater than the sum of its parts. But it was expensive to maintain and to run to full standard, and would very soon have needed a full and complete overhaul.

I'm not a Potter fan. I loved FJ for its merits, as I did the IOA expansion. I'm looking forward to the new area too for its merits not its name. Trust me, what is planned will be amazing and on a par with loosing Jaws. The hybrid coaster should make FJ seem like iasw.

A cynic would say this is a sneaky ruse to force fans to park hop. Maybe. But it's certainly not a bad thing for the resort as a whole.

Potter is timeless in the same way Jaws or Jurassic Park is. You can't ignore the fact that Universal let that ride die. It faced the same fate as the storyline of Kilimanjaro Safaris. They kept removing more and more until it was barely hanging on. It's sad but that's the truth. Do I think Potter should have taken over Jaws? Heck no. I don't want to have to get a two park pass in order to see all of Potter. The Lost Continent should have been the first to go. If anything, Transformers should have taken the place of Jaws. Potter is timeless. There is no denying, and as for Lord of the Rings, I'd bet you it would be a mad house if such an attraction opened.

Now that I think of it, it is quite interesting how LOTR never got a theme park ride etc. I loved Jaws and Jurassic Park so they are my favorite areas @ Universal. Sadly, Jurassic Park will go at some point as well. Out with the old..in with the new.

Speaking of Star Wars...a land is way overdue. I would have preferred that to Avatarland.

It's just my opinion but I think that the little land they made for Harry Potter was okay for them. But an entire "world" is not going to work. Not too many people will be Harry Potter junkies in a couple of years. You don't have many now as it is. Nobody wants to go to a park that has too much of one movie they don't care for.

I am not up on the Universal attractions as much as Disney World, but here is my take on HP!

...if they would execute the new area in a way it takes you behind the scenes of the making of HP I think it would fit into the studio park a little better. As it stands now, I am in agreement with others that think it will be a land that will not have many visitors in a few years, then they will replace it with a new land! We will have to wait and see, in a few years, if HP has staying power for a longtime or will be replaced in a few years!

Remember when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was popular? Peter Pan? The Little Mermaid? The Lion King? Toy Story? Monsters, Inc.? Well nobody talks about that anymore. :p

But it's a whole land themed to one movie. At least Fantasyland has different attractions on different movies which people would have seen at least one of them.

You do know Fear factor is still performed there on a daily basis right???

Transformers is only Spiderman, and no where near as good....

That's a good point.
I find Disneyland's decision to build Carsland much more questionable than either Pandora or the Potter expansion.
...especially after that dog of a sequel.
The whole thing seems like a billion-dollar vanity project for Jon Lasseter.

You have to understand that to older people who grew up with these attractions, it's the end of the world for one of these attractions (Jaws, Horizons, etc.) to be closed down. But to those of us who did not grow up with these attractions, it's just another old, outdated attraction biting the dust. Try to imagine some of these attractions without the nostalgic value. They're not nearly as exciting.
Yeah, my teenage children have no fan loyalty to movies like King Kong, Earthquake, Ghostbusters, Blues Brothers, or Jaws. I've had them watch the movies and received big yawns in return. WDW can get away with the "classics" because most 2-to-4 year-old are willing to watch (for example) Peter Pan. However, Universal is more of a tween/teenage park (just look at the number of rides with height restrictions of 48" or more) and needs to appeal to that crowd. If my teenagers are any indication, that crowd does not want to see 30 year-old movies. Although I am sad to see "classic" rides such as Jaws disappear, it appears that Universal has to refresh its attractions at a faster rate than WDW because its target audience is different.

I started the topic right but it ended up sounding VERY similar to that other thread my bad..

I meant to come across that theming a whole entire land based on one movie is bad. I got caught up in my post I guess [: haha

I think Wizarding World has proven that this is not the case, or at least not always the case. It is a huge success for Universal and even if they were to tear it down in two years to build something else (which won't happen) they probably still would have gotten thier money's worth.
