Gyro - How do YOU Pronounce it?

I've always known the word to be spelt gyros and pronounced kheeroh, the first sound being an aspirated "h", as previously mentioned the same as the start of 'chutzpah', the final "s" is silent in Greek.

The correct pronunciation is like... "yeero" at least that's how I teach my students...

If it hadn't been for Seinfeld, I never would have heard of these things. And because they pronounce it like gyroscope, that is the correct version in my book

I've never heard of it pronouced like Hero.
We say it like gyroscope here.

The "gyroscope" pronnunciation has got to be an American influence. I stand by "Yeeero" version until the day I die.

We pronounced it "yee-ro" where I grew up. Maybe it is a Chicago thing.

Well, when I has in Greece they pronounced it yeero....with a touch of ch as in Chutzpah.

I looooove Gyros. :slurp: I could so live on them....good thing I am greek and know a lot of people who own diners...:lol:
